Ōkamiden is the long-awaited sequel to the 2006 cult classic Ōkami. Focusing on Amaterasu's son Chibiterasu and the children of many of the previous game's characters, the game differs from its predecessor in its use of multiple partners to provide different effects on gameplay, with the Celestial Brush now being controlled via the DS' Touch Screen.

Despite receiving critical acclaim and becoming a moderate commercial success, the game is fairly divisive among fans, mainly due to the liberties it takes with connecting its story to that of its predecessor. However, it's still considered a decent game in its own right. In that sense, it can be considered the Chrono Cross of the seventh generation.

Anti-Piracy Measures

Anti-piracy measures for Ōkamiden allow the pirate to play a short demo of the game before it permanently stops progression.

Around half an hour of gameplay, the player has picked up Kuni as their companion, who takes Chibiterasu to his hidden Cave of Nagi. Upon exiting the cave, the game softlocks. Loading zones become unusable and brush abilities have no effect. Attempting to enter a loading zone briefly freezes the game and the player clips through the loading zone hitbox only to remain on the same map.

Kuni is also missing from Chibiterasu's back and the mini-map, yet his dialogue box still appears when approaching the lanterns right out of the cave. He prompts the player to slash the lanterns, which they cannot do because ink from brush techniques fades away right after it is placed.

Once Chibiterasu is stuck in this area, it is not feasible to leave without resetting the game, erasing progress since the last save. Redoing the Cave of Nagi only puts the player in the same predicament, making further progression impossible.

There is a known patch for the game that pirates can apply to the ROM to remove anti-piracy features.

Untranslated dialogue found in the English versions of the game.

Envoy Scrolls

Envoy Scrolls are found in treasure chests throughout the game. They were written by Issun and typically give tips for playing the game.

The following image files are found in the directory Rom/ui/emaki/tendou, while the text files are found in Rom/ui/emaki_text/Tendou. The text files were blanked in the English versions of the game.

Note that the images are only mockups of how they would look in-game. The actual image files only consist of the header text and illustration (sans paper background).

Okamiden-ThankYou bottom-INT.png

Found in the folder EyeCatch are two graphics named "ThankYou_top" and "ThankYou_bottom". They were likely used in early demo versions of the game, for use at conventions and such. The English text suggests the game would be out in 2010, even though it didn't end up being released in the west until early 2011.

The Japanese text translates to "Don't miss it! Planned for Release in 2010".

The "final" demos, offered for download closer to their respective release dates, used different screens.

"Success!"/"Failure"

Okamiden-complete.png Okamiden-failure.png

These two graphics, "complete" (left) and "failure" (right), are found in the "ui" folder. Their intended use isn't known for sure, but their similarity to the graphics used in Onigiri-Sensei's dojo imply that the location was intended to make a comeback.

Shop Interface

There are several early graphics for the shop interface stored in the "ui" folder. The final versions of these graphics are stored in the sub-folder "sub_shop_all_bg". For comparison purposes, graphics from the Japanese version are used here to represent the final versions.

Early Graphic Final Graphic Description
Okamiden-h frame-Early.png Okamiden-h frame-Final.png File Name: h_frame

This screen is for when you're trading in Demon parts, rewards for killing demons a certain way, for new abilities.

The early version uses three variations of the Demon Fang, the item used in Ōkami, possibly just as placeholders. The final version uses three distinct items: Demon Bones, Skins, and Livers.

Additionally, the space for the scroll bar was moved from the left side of the screen to the right. The ruby characters (small text) above the text in the bottom-left corner were also removed, and the graphics in general were touched up slightly.

Okamiden-select bg-Early.png Okamiden-select bg-Final.png File Name: select_bg

This window appears when you choose an item to buy. The item appears in the box and you can choose "Yes" or "No". The window was made much shorter for the final version.

Okamiden-shop buy frame-Early.png Okamiden-shop buy frame-Final.png File Name: shop_buy_frame

This screen is for when you're buying items from a merchant. The differences are mostly the same as before. The purse graphic in the bottom-right corner was also slightly modified.

Okamiden-shop sells choice-Early.png x File Name: shop_sells_choice

Just contains the "sell" graphic at the top of the screen. There doesn't seem to be a "final" counterpart.

Okamiden-shop sells frame-Early.png Okamiden-shop sells frame-Final.png File Name: shop_sells_frame

This screen is for when you're selling items to a merchant. The same differences as "shop_buy_frame" apply.

Error Messages

Found in a folder named "error" are various error messages likely used during development. They remain untranslated in the English versions of the game.
