CES'95 Build

Probably the earliest known playable build. It was shown at CES'95 and screenshots from it were posted in Gamepro magazine.

Lunchables Sega Game Tips Video

In 1995, Lunchables presumably had a mail-in offer for a videotape providing some (very) basic tips for various Genesis games. At the end of the video was a sneak peek of Comix Zone. The narrator says the game is "coming this Summer", suggesting the footage is from early 1995.

This footage predates the 16 prototypes released by drx in 2008, which are dated May through July 1995.

At the title screen, after the background animation rolls out, the title logo simply pops into view. In the final version, the logo falls from the top of the screen and shakes a bit as it settles. The copyright and text is also closer to the title logo, reading "PATENT PENDING" instead of "All Rights Reserved". The menu options also aren't present in the preview video.

The first panel of the first level is simply a recreation of the title screen image. This was changed to the N.W.E. Command Center, where Sketch Turner and General Alissa Cyan have a brief conversation. Three items were added for the player to immediately fill their inventory.

Also, in the preview, Sketch falls from the middle of the scene and lands on his feet, while in the final version he falls on his face.

In the room where you pick up Roadkill, the floor breaks and the player falls through to the next panel in the final version. In the preview, you simply press Down to go to the next panel like usual.

In one of the following rooms, a Strigil was removed from the final release. In his place, three barrels with a hidden Flying Creature inside were added to block the exit. A visible divider was also removed from the panel beneath.

As for overall level design, the space beyond its bounds was changed from solid white to black.
