Proto:Ape Escape

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This page details one or more prototype versions of Ape Escape.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • There is later US demo which features monkey radar.
  • There is European demo that came on a demo disc with Double Life - Music for PlayStation, which seems to be the same demo than the Pizza Hut demo, but has Time Attack on 100% levels and gives more gadgets after you complete level 2.

Pizza Hut Demo Disc

In the 1990s, Pizza Hut gave away discs that contained demo versions of games, one of which was Ape Escape.

General

  • The monkeys use different voice clips in the intro cutscene.
  • In the screen where Casi tells you how many monkeys to catch, the siren is missing.
  • Spike uses voice clips from the Japanese version.
  • Professor and Natalie only have subtitles; their voice acting is not yet present.
  • The demo only has the first two stages.
  • The camera doesn't move around when Spike disappears after doing his winning pose.
  • There is no after-image effect before the level complete animation after Spike catches the last monkey in a level.
  • It's not possible to get gold medals in Time Attack; the highest medal achievable is silver.

Title Screen

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto Title.png Ape Escape (PlayStation)-title.png

The menu font is significantly different, the menu options are red and don't blend in very well with the background, and the trademark symbol is less stylized.

Dualshock Screen

Demo Europe US
ApeEscape Proto DualShockScreen.png ApeEscapeEU-DualShock.png ApeEscapeUS-DualShock.png

The demo's DualShock controller screen is very similar to the European version and likewise recommends the DualShock instead of saying it's required.

Intro Cutscene

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto Intro.png ApeEscape Intro.png

The area where Specter puts on his helmet in the intro cutscene is a wooden area instead of a colorful, circus-like area.

Status Screen

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto StatusScreen.png ApeEscape StatusScreen.png

The pause menu and status screen features a thicker font in the demo. "Stage" is in all caps in the demo.

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto StatusScreen2.png ApeEscape StatusScreen2.png

The demo has leading zeros when displaying the totals.

Other

After completing Primordial Ooze in the demo, you're presented with the following two screens.

ApeEscape Proto PrimordialOozeCompleteScreen.png

This screen refers to the two gadgets in the training room, the Sky Flyer and the RC Car. After completing their training, you gain permanent access to the gadgets.

ApeEscape Proto TimeStationMap.png

After the previous screen, you're presented with a map of the Time Station barring the minigame room, which is closed off. This map contains the unique Warp Room not present in the final.

Stage Select

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto Lvl2Name.png ApeEscape StageSelect.png

Primordial Ooze is called Wetlands in the demo. The demo uses a more stylized font for the menu options.

Level Briefing

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto LevelStartScreen.png ApeEscape LevelStartScreen.png

The font is different, and the demo is missing the monkey and Specter Coin counters.

Level Ending

Demo Final
ApeEscape Proto LvlCompleteScreen.png ApeEscape LvlCompleteScreen.png

Both fonts on this screen are different, and the demo says "STAGE CLEAR!" instead of "STAGE CLEARED!" in a larger font.

Time Station

Warp Room

The warp switch is in a separate, darker room called the Warp Room, unique to the demo. It features a machine with generators and electricity moving in a wavy pattern, indicating that this is all powering the warp switch. It's north of the main area, and you spawn here upon leaving a level.

This room may have been removed due to its size and the fact that the stage select is accessed simply through a switch.

Center Room

ApeEscape Proto ExitMonitor.png

The memory card monitor has been replaced with a monitor that takes you back to the title screen.

Other

  • The minigames room is locked, for obvious reasons.
  • Only the Sky-Flyer, RC Car, and the Water Net are available in the gadget practice room, with the latter only accessible when you play the second level.

Gadgets

  • The Water Net lacks the screeching sound played while swimming faster.
