This page details one or more prototype versions of Sonic & Knuckles.

Released on February 23, 2008 by drx, these prototypes were part of a huge package filled with prototypes from Sega of America from around 1994-95. Dated after Sonic the Hedgehog 3, these prototypes offer a look behind the scenes at the game's development.

Prototypes built before the process of splitting Sonic & Knuckles into its own game began.

Dated April 8, 1994. Many things in the Sonic & Knuckles half are still being implemented.

Other Builds

Sonic & Knuckles 0612

  • Selecting "Special Stage 1" will still bring you to the Blue Spheres minigame.
  • There's still no code to enable Blue Spheres.
  • While the password selection for Blue Spheres is present, it can't be selected yet.
  • Tails' life counter now calls him "Miles" on a Japanese system.
  • The Marble Garden Zone Act 1 miniboss crash glitch is still present.
  • The Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 boss' starting position is still shifted slightly left compared to the final, allowing endless hits on the boss without destroying the satellite, with the first 7 hits counting towards defeating the boss.

Sonic & Knuckles 0618

  • Selecting "Special Stage 1" will no longer bring you to the Blue Spheres minigame.
  • If Sonic 1 is locked on, the characters on the "NO WAY!" screen are now colored. However, the code to enable Blue Spheres is still absent.
  • In Debug Mode, the level coordinates now only show when in edit mode, rather than being shown all the time.
  • Beating the Marble Garden Zone Act 1 miniboss with player 2 offscreen will no longer crash the game. However, it now causes the game to reset back to the SEGA screen.
  • The falling spikes at the first set of stairs in Lava Reef Zone Act 1 have been removed.

Sonic & Knuckles 0619

  • The code to enable Blue Spheres is still absent if Sonic 1 is locked on.
