Bot Differences
A lot of the bots the player was meant to face in single player were different in this build.

Deck 17

Near the end of the Deathmatch ladder is a level called “Deck 17”, which is a level that never appears in the final version of the game. However, when selected, the game shows it as DM-Turbine. Playing it also sends the player to DM-Turbine.

It seems the developers planned on making a sequel to ‘’Unreal’s’’ DmDeck16 at one point and planned on it being in the game to the point where they put it into the single player ladder. However, it seems they scrapped it early on, as the actual map doesn't appear anywhere in the prototype’s files. The final game included DM-Deck16II, an improved version of the original Deck 16, and the map itself appeared in the ladders of both console versions.

A level named DM-Deck17 did appear in Unreal Tournament 2004, but as it was a fan-created UT2003 map purchased by Epic, it's unlikely it was inspired by some hypothetical UT99 version.

Ladder Layout

The levels in each ladder are quite different in v222. Note that this guide is using the original ladders for the final game, not the ones used in the GotY version.

Ladder Select Menu

The buttons used for going forward or back are larger and on the right side of the screen, underneath the ladder details. The final game moves the buttons to the left side and makes them smaller. The ladder details box is made much larger now that the buttons aren't taking up space underneath it.

The ladder select menu does not have a button above the ladder status screen that allows the player to see the trophies they’ve collected.

The screen is slightly lighter in v222 than it is in the final game.

Level Select Screen

The left rim on the level screenshot is slightly fatter in v222 than it is in the final game. The entire screen is a little lighter in v222 than in the final game.

Font

The font used on the single ladder is a futuristic-looking one. However, the font makes it hard to read the text at times, which is likely why it was changed in the final game.

Unlocking Ladders

In v222, each ladder is unlocked after beating two non-tutorial levels, not three.

Unlocked Ladders

The animation revealing an unlocked ladder will play every time the player goes to the ladder select menu after unlocking at least one ladder. The final game changes it so that the animation only plays once; when the ladder is first unlocked.

Ladder Select Text Speed

The text on the right side of the ladder select screen is much slower than it is in the final game.

Playable Teams

In v222, the player can only play in the Iron Guard team and cannot select their character's face. The "male" option uses the Johnson face skin, while the "female" option uses the Ivana face skin.

Enemy Teams

The Black Legion is the opposing team in a vast majority of ladder matches using team modes, like Capture the Flag. The only time the Blood Reavers or Dark Phalanx are fought is at the start of a ladder.

Despite having usable skins, Thunder Crash and Raw Steel do not appear as rival teams.

Tutorials

The tutorials must be played first before going through a ladder. In the final game, the tutorials can be skipped.

Assault Tutorial

The Assault tutorial is bugged in v222. The player will spawn as on the defending team, but the tutorial is written like the player is on the attacking team. This can be fixed by switching teams via the “Player setup” menu and choosing the Blue team, which will put the player on the attacking team.

However, after destroying the tank, the level will begin again, but the player will be on the defending team. The player has to switch back to the Red team and destroy the final objective again in order to complete the tutorial.

Capture the Flag Tutorial

The Capture the Flag tutorial is a bit different as well. The player is forced to stay in their team’s spawn room because a door is blocking the way out. They can’t leave until the voice-over starts talking about the flags, in which they’re suddenly teleported to the front of the flag. The door then opens so that the bots can get out of the spawn area. The final game gets rid of this and allows the player to run around as soon as the map starts.

Assault Levels

In the Assault ladder, the player will never switch to the defending team after completing the final objective, like in the final game.

Final Level in each Ladder

If the final level in a ladder is beaten, the game will not register the level as being beaten. This makes it impossible to beat a ladder.

Amount of Players in the Match

There are noticeable differences in the amount of players in most of the matches.
