The game was first released in Korea, but there is no "Korea" category in the bob template.

I'm not sure if the GM tool counts as developer tools, some input would be nice.

Korean Version's Beta UI

I'm probably the only person who visits this page, but I wanted to ask if adding a section for the UI Korean MapleStory used during Beta would be all right... It was used for the Japanese and Korean versions of the game for a short time, bits of it can still be found in Global's files despite Global never using it. Sorry if I formatted this wrong, this is my first time posting. --Zalost 11:56, 21 April 2013 (EDT)

  • Go for it, just focus mainly on the fact that bits of it are still in GMS and use that screenshot as an example of how it would have looked. And sorry for not replying sooner, I don't check up on this page often, lol --Syntaxlies 18:27, 22 August 2013 (EDT)

Unused BGM Origins

After doing some research, various Korean pages say that Elfwood and WhereTheBarlogFrom were used in the 2003 Beta. Elfwood is actually a slow acoustic guitar rendition of the normal Ellinia BGM WhenTheMorningComes, and was the music for the Ellinia Magic Library, where the Magician job instructor was. Similarly, WhereTheBarlogFrom, which sounds similar to the Perion BGM Nightmare, was used in the Perion Warrior Sanctuary, where the Warrior job instructor is (he is also notably named Dances With Balrog).

Although this info isn't quite concrete and it's difficult to do extensive research with no knowledge of Korean, I think it's now safe to say those BGMs belonged to those towns at some point given their names and composition, and it's better than the rampant speculation they've been subject to here. --Syntaxlies (talk) 00:24, 5 January 2016 (EST)

Protos/Betas

Recently two ancient versions of this game were released here: http://forum.ragezone.com/f425/maplestory-client-archive-gmsdlreborn-1101897/ under KMS, first being dated June 3, 2003 and second February 9, 2004. Worth checking out. There seems to be extra debug info in the exes as well: function names, there's a crash dump with a list of processes running on whoever's computer, lots of Korean (?) ~ Rain (talk) 07:25, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

I took a quick look and there's a handful of NPCs in the June 2003 one that don't exist at all in later versions, even the Feb 2004 one. Barnes, Laden, Phil and Ebla. There's also an early version of Lucy (the Amherst pot shop vendor) with a very different design who even has the appropriate shop data. I looked over the maps and these NPCs aren't set to spawn in any of them, and they appear before NPCs like Sera or Roger (the earliest ones you encounter) in the NPC table which implies they existed first. It's quite possible these guys are from an even earlier version of the game, so hopefully someone finds that KMS Closed Beta client eventually so we can check.
I also noticed that in a Map's info table, there were entries for "Cloud", "Rain" and "Snow". While Cloud was kept as it's what triggers that particular effect in some of the Perion maps (and others I believe), the Rain and Snow tables were removed from later versions entirely. It's possible a weather system was in the works at some point, or at least maps where it was actively raining and snowing. Syntaxlies (talk) 17:03, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
You can see the weather system in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2kePe3awmk. Wish they kept it instead of turning it into a 30-second cash grab, would've made for some good atmosphere.
Those NPCs look pretty old school. Any idea where they would've been used? Ebla (0000070) gives quest "fighter" and Barnes (0000180) gives "magician", but I couldn't find the quest information anywhere, so they might've been stored on the server at this point in development. It also appears that a bunch of NPCs are missing from the list (0000000-0000060, among others), so the devs probably removed these out of embarrassment over how bad they were (just kidding?) or skipped over these numbers for whatever reason.
Speaking of editing tools, it seems like a pain to go through all of the maps with HaRepacker looking for NPCs, unless you're a saint, and did. What tools did you use?
And finally, there's a version listing here, and you can browse around and see what changes were made when. The June version is V1.22, one version after the cash shop was implemented, and the Feb version is somewhere inbetween V1.54 and V1.56. ~ Rain (talk) 19:35, 17 August 2016 (EDT)
There are definitely more NPCs in that series that were removed given how the ID numbers jump around like that, but obviously we have no way to confirm that until somebody finds an earlier version of the game. My guess is that Barnes and Ebla are some of the original job instructor NPCs, or of a similar role. If you look at the info for Dances With Balrog and Grendel, they also have "fighter" and "magician" as their quest data and they're the only other NPCs that do. Also, I can't really read Korean very well but I'm 99% sure one of Ebla's lines is making a reference to a character named Embla von Prios, from a KRPG series that was popular around the time MS would have been in development, who also happens to be a mage of sorts.
I did indeed use HaRepacker. It's got a search function, and if you search the IDs for those NPCs they only show up in the NPC table. If you search something like "FloralLife", it will list a bunch of maps with that BGM in their Info because it's a commonly used song.
And yes, that weather system would have been amazing. I played a private server that enabled the CS snow effect permanently on the maps in El Nath and it made it so much better. Syntaxlies (talk) 20:19, 17 August 2016 (EDT)

Stamps graphics/note system?

While looking through the Data.wz of those Korean betas, I came across these Stamp items that I've never seen before. There's Snail, Blue Snail, Stump and Slime stamps. I checked the current-day GMS data, and yep, they're still there, but I have no idea if they were ever used or not. I've certainly never seen them if they were. I need someone to confirm so I can add them to the page.

I'm also curious, are they perhaps related to the Note system that GMS never got? I mean, we technically have it but the only time you'll ever see it in use is when you're expelled from a guild while offline, so it's kinda worth a mention on the page. Syntaxlies (talk) 12:56, 22 August 2016 (EDT)
