S&K

Should we have a separate page specifically for Sonic 3 & Knuckles locked on together, if we get that far? -- Rick 17:44, 17 May 2010 (EDT)

Might as well, considering how many things are different between the two. However, I'm really hesitant to touch this series, given the sheer amount of material Sonic Retro has already gathered. The site is in no danger of disappearing, either. Should we just link to their wiki and leave it at that? :| --BMF54123 19:52, 17 May 2010 (EDT)
Surprisingly, no. There's actually some things that even Sonic Retro doesn't have, especially about Sonic 3 and S&K! They have disassemblies of both of the earlier games, but almost nothing for S3&K. There are a few things that are only on the forums and nowhere else, iirc. Besides, our focus is exclusively on this data, not on Sonic as a whole -- I see no reason to gather and compile their information. I'll talk to SS/Tweaker and see if we can go ahead and lift their content, though. --Xkeeper 20:05, 17 May 2010 (EDT)
Okay...I still think it would be best to focus on games that haven't been disassembled to death, though. What's keeping people from adding the stuff on the forums to their wiki? --BMF54123 20:07, 17 May 2010 (EDT)
I'm not saying we should focus on these games, just that we shouldn't prevent ourselves from displaying data just because another site does it. One of those "to be added, but low priority" things. --Xkeeper 20:09, 17 May 2010 (EDT)
I'm seconding Xk on this one. Just because another site has it doesn't mean we can't do it. -- Rick 20:36, 17 May 2010 (EDT)

carnival night zones palette

Im posting this because im suprised nobody found it by now but if you switch carnival night zones palette with launch bases is matchs up with a prerelease screenshot. I was not able to make a game genie code so i upload a s3k rom with carnival nights palettes switched. Heres the rom . Could someone document this for me because i dont have any experience with editing articles.--Gible v (talk) 21:15, 18 October 2014 (EDT)

The colors in that CNZ screenshot are purple because it's underwater (you can see a bubble to the left of Sonic). It's possible that they used a different underwater palette at that point, but you should never trust the colors in printed screenshots because the RGB -> CMYK conversion is never perfect (and scanning the images back into RGB just makes things worse). Additionally, any similarity you're seeing by swapping the palettes is purely coincidental and is certainly not a result of them actually swapping the palettes between zones during development, so this isn't really valid wiki material. Sorry. --BMF54123 (talk) 03:50, 19 October 2014 (EDT)
Well i dont think i made it clear but i was talking about the under water palette. It only saved with the main palette saved as launch bases and water as launch base act 2s first water palette. Wow that sounded weird. With the palette i had set for under water it looked near identical to that screenshot and blah blah i wont make up some speculation. Well heres a video that might make it clear what i was talking however i do understand why this might not be wiki material. Link --Gible v (talk) 13:39, 19 October 2014 (EDT)
That actually a lot closer than I expected. You can tell that one of the cycling palettes is different (the prerelease screenshot has green and black for the orbs) but everything else is almost spot-on. I'm no expert on Sonic palettes, but the number of colors that match up between this palette swap and the screenshot is too great to be a simple coincidence. --Peardian (talk) 17:53, 19 October 2014 (EDT)
Heres a screenshot of the palette swap near the location the prerelease screenshot was taken.

Prototypes

There are sonic 3 prototypes lingering around right? One even with all zones packed into one cart. Theres more, but i'm in a hurry. --Metal in sonic 2 (talk) 15:41, 15 March 2016 (EDT)

Eighth Special Stage is Counted

This Special Stage also accumulates an emerald but it is hidden, only have 6 emeralds visible and can become Super Sonic. I would add that, but the Sonic Retro information is different. --Porcino (talk) 14:03, 23 August 2016 (EDT)

Sonic and Knuckles Zones

I have the game genie codes for the rest of the sonic and knuckles levels, such as hidden palace and the bonus stages. Should I add them to the Sonic the hedgehog 3 page? --Hello123 (talk) 9:09, 16 November 2016 (EDT)

Sure, why not? I've been able to access a few of the other ones, but not through codes. Having those could simplify things a bit. --RanASTC 16:00, 16 November 2016 (EST)

List of "Unused" Sounds that are Actually Used

I have looked into the unused sounds and identified which ones are used in Sonic & Knuckles as well as sounds that have been mistakenly listed as unused.

The sounds which are indeed used by Sonic 3 alone are as follows:

  • $68: Used when erasing a save file on the Data Select screen. (sounded like the "teleporter" tubes from Death egg 1 to me, just a single "blip" not many) - MIdAS
  • $78: Used by the Carnival Night Act 2 boss.
  • $79: Used by the Sparkler badniks in Carnival Night.
  • $94: Used when Bubbles changes direction.
  • $9F: Used as the super transformation sound, even in Sonic 3 alone
  • $B7: While Sonic & Knuckles uses it as the slot machine sound, Sonic 3 also uses it when navigating the Data Select screen.
  • $B8: Used when the goal sign appears.
  • $BB: The sound Tails makes when he gets tired from flying.
  • $BF: Used when the Hydrocity miniboss stirs the water.
  • $C0: Used by the propellers that launch you through underwater passages in Hydrocity Zone.
  • $C1: Used by the fans that propel you upwards in Hydrocity Zone.
  • $C3: Though they are used for the anti-gravity tubes in Death Egg Zone, Sonic 3 alone uses this sound when selecting your character in the Competition mode.
  • $C7: Used by the cannons in Carnival Night Zone.
  • $C9: Used by the swinging spike balls in Marble Garden Zone.
  • $D2: Used when turning the crank in the Gumball Machine.
  • $DB: The sound heard when running on water in Hydrocity Zone.

Strange compressed graphic in Angel Island Zone Act2, maybe a button

Uncompressing the graphics in Offset 18DB46 with Nemesis, I checked a weird graphic that resembles a Button, in fact I do not know how I should fit the tiles, so I made several interpretations. This graphic is next to the graphics of the trunks burned close to the fight against the boss, but it isn't loaded completely. I believe this isn't used anywhere. S3 AIZ2 Comp Graphic Buttom.png--Porcino (talk) 20:07, 30 May 2017 (EDT)

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen that before. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a button considering that unused one for Carnival Night.--JmTsHaW (talk) 21:29, 30 May 2017 (EDT)
These tiles should be loaded during the fight against the boss in AIZ2, this "button" is a discarded rest, but it is very large compared to what Knuckles uses at the end of the act. --Porcino (talk) 23:21, 30 May 2017 (EDT)

Possible unused boss palettes

"These palettes can be found at offsets 05275C and 05277C. Judging by the location in the ROM, these palettes could have been used in a boss battle taking place after Launch Base."

Actually, these are copies of the object palettes for AIZ2 and ICZ2, and judging by their location in the ROM, they were once used by the AfterBoss_Cleanup function immediately above, before the code was changed to just point at the actual AIZ2 and ICZ2 palettes. --Neo (talk) 10:44, 14 June 2017 (EDT)

Okay, fixing this now. --Chainspike (talk) 1:14, 9 September 2017 (EST)

Unused Competition Title Cards

The Sonic 3 Unlocked blog just made a post revealing an unused title card feature in Competition Mode, complete with video. According to the blog, it doesn't load because of "VRAM conflicts with the level graphics". — NES Boy (talk) 07:09, 9 August 2017 (EDT)

The unused ring in Carnival Night Zone

I figured out that this unused item slot when placed, spawns a slope collision. Should this information be added to the page?

Sure, that would be good information to add. --Chainspike (talk) 3:03, 8 April 2018 (EST)
The green ring appears to spawn the collision for the red and white corkscrew things in the level. If the green rings are placed correctly, Sonic will enter the "corkscrew" state, and the slope collision matches them perfectly. --DonGlitchy (talk) 20:21, 12 July 2018 (EDT)

Unused Sonic Sprites

In the to-do for unused graphics it states:

"Sonic & Tails have their rotating running sprites from Lava Reef's Act 1 and Sky Sanctuary's ending cutscene from Sonic & Knuckles." "Sonic & Tails have their rotating poles sprites from Mushroom Hill Zone's Act 2 and Sandopolis Zone from Sonic & Knuckles." "Sonic & Tails have their rotating walking sprites from Lava Reef's Act 2 from Sonic & Knuckles."

Pretty sure some of these were extra sprites that were added for Sonic & Knuckles. Do these actually exist in the ROM? --Chainspike (talk) 3:03, 8 April 2018 (EST)

To be honest, the ROM offsets for these sprites should be listed because of this. It makes things easier to confirm. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 15:05, 8 April 2018 (EDT)
@Divingkataetheweirdo, just add sprite. Edwardthe (talk) 12:12, 25 April 2018 (EDT)
I just spent time digging through the Sonic 3 ROM. Chainspike is right. --Mattrizzle (talk) 23:55, 11 May 2018 (EDT)
Considering who added them, this is not a big surprise. Thanks for checking into this. --BMF54123 (talk) 01:44, 12 May 2018 (EDT)

Abnormally long horizontal spike?

Just asking, but is there any actual sprite mappings data that actually lays out the spike tiles to look like that? As far as I know, it's only coincidental it looks that way in VRAM. When laid out 4x2 tiles in size, you get the standard 2 spikes sitting next to each other. -- Novedicus (Talk) 9:25, 19 September 2019 (EDT)

The mini Death Egg icon

Sonic3Minideathegg.png This icon was apparently found years ago in the Sonic 3 ROM. Interestingly, this is actually a frame of the Death Egg hologram projector from Sonic & Knuckles. This is important because it is actually part of the animating tiles for Death Egg Zone, which suggests that development may have reached Death Egg Zone before the game was split. Therefore, I am wondering if anyone knows the offset for this in the ROM to verify that this is actually from Sonic 3. -- Chainspike (Talk) 20:16, 8 October 2019 (EST)

Animated tiles in the Sonic games are typically uncompressed in the ROM. Sonic & Knuckles has the animated tiles for the projector uncompressed at C87E0-C8E1F in the ROM. Searching for the exact same data in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 turned up nothing, even for the front-facing frame alone. --Mattrizzle (talk) 23:12, 8 October 2019 (EDT)

"Unused" Penguinator sprites may actually be used

It seems like there's at least one Penguinator in Act 2 of Ice Cap which is placed at the top of a curved slope, and it uses the downward-facing sliding sprites when going down said slope. --Murnjendoof (talk) 12:54, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Leftover Sonic 2 sprites

One thing I noticed while playing Carnival Night Zone: when Sonic runs up the spinning wire cylinder near the beginning of Act 1, Sonic's sprite changes to the one used when running up the cylinder from the prototype, making him briefly look like how he did in Sonic 2. This does not affect going down the cylinder. It was not fixed in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and it may have even made it into Sonic Origins (I'll have to check). This was probably due to a developer oversight. Should we add this? If so, where? I'm honestly surprised that no one seems to have found this before me. Has anyone else noticed this? -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 22:11, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Well, first you would need to confirm if what you're seeing is true by comparing sprites or direct-feed screenshots to each other. And if it is, I don't see why it would need to be added? If you can see the sprite during gameplay, then the sprite was used and it doesn't really matter where it came from. ReyVGM (talk) 22:36, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Okay. If it doesn't need to be added, then I won't check. Thank you! -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 20:58, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
I know I said I'd leave this alone, but I thought on it a bit. I actually found out about this on Sonic Retro on the Sonic 3 Bugs page of that website. The picture they use clearly shows that Sonic 2 sprites are used when going up the cylinder (here's the link to the page in question: https://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_3/Bugs#Incorrect_running_up_sprites). Also, I think this could be put in the Oddites section of this page; while you are right in the fact that the sprites are used, it is still odd. If you still think that I shouldn't add this, please let me know. I will do what you said and check if the sprites in the actual game match the picture on Sonic Retro. I will also check if Sonic Origins still has this error. Thank you for your advice! -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 00:44, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
I personally fail to see the relevancy. Sure, it's a nice trivia or detail, but who is to say that wasn't what the developers intended? And again, you would need to compare the sprites between the games in question to verify that what you're seeing is true. It might be that the sprite looks like another one, and not that it really is the same one. Don't just post stuff because you saw it somewhere else. Always investigate first and verify the claims. ReyVGM (talk) 07:47, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Okay. I'll still check, but I won't post anything. Thanks! -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 18:46, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
I checked Sonic Origins, and the oddity is still there. Just letting you know. I will not post it. Thank you for your thoughts and your help! -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 01:32, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
