A terrible port of Tekken 2 on the NES. And you thought the 3D renders couldn't get any worse.

Leftover Character

Tekken2NES Mizuki.png

If you change the value in $00B9/$00BA to $08, you'll find a character named "Mizuki". This is actually a leftover from Shin Samurai Spirits 2: Haohmaru Jigokuhen. However, only her name remains; she appears to be a broken clone of Law that uses Wang's palette.

Kart Fighter Ending Music

Track 4 - Kart Fighter Ending Music

Similar to Shin Samurai Spirits 2: Haohmaru Jigokuhen and Hummer Team's Mortal Kombat 3, Kart Fighter's ending theme can be found in the NSF. It's possible Tekken 2 is built off either one of these games.

Pressing Up, Right, Up, Right, Right, Right, Up, Left on the title screen will trigger a hidden JY logo screen with the common full-screen logo. The only way out of it is to reset the game.

Revisions/Hacks

Battle Arena Toshinden

Battle Arena Toshinden-title.png

As with several other pirate games, Tekken 2 uses a PCB with a DIP switch on it, which changes some aspects of the game's visual appearance. The two titles contained in this game are Tekken 2 and Battle Arena Toshinden. The DIP switch can be toggled in FCEUX by resetting the game (note that other emulators may handle this differently).

Tekken 3

Tekken3NES Title.pngTekken3NES CharacterSelect.pngTekken3NES WinScreen.png

An unofficial hack that shrinks the ROM (instead of being 640 KB, now it's 384 KB) which removes Michelle, King, and Law (although their coding still remains in the game; you can access them by changing the value in address $00B9/$00BA with $02, $05 or $07.), replaces all the unique victory screens with generic win/lose screens and removes the graphics for the JY logo. This hack appears to be a bit glitchy as well; player 1's portrait appears to be using a darker yellow color and pausing the game causes the sound channels to freeze rather than mute. Many other title hacks of this revision exist, with different sequel numbers and some that pretend to be Tekken Tag Tournament or sequels of it.
