A bootleg version of The King of Fighters '96, except it plays more like Street Fighter II.

Unused Cutscenes

Kof96unusedcutsceneinaction.png

The game was supposed to have cutscenes, but only two remain functional through hacking, albeit without graphics. The text for some of the removed cutscenes can still be found in the ROM. To access the two cutscenes while playing the game, change the value at RAM address 40 to 0C (cutscene before fighting Chizuru) or 0E (cutscene before fighting Goenitz). The cutscene will play after seeing the intro again.

Unused Characters

Kof96nesunusedcharacterinaction.png

In the ROM, there seems to be a total of 20 characters in the game, but 13 of them were cut out. The characters that were cut out still have their code in the game and do function correctly, but the graphics are glitched. It's a possibility that the original version had these characters, but it's unknown if it was ever on cartridge form. They were probably cut to make room for the cartridge the game was going to be put on. (If these characters did have graphics, the game would probably be around 1.25 MB. The ROM that can be found is 768 KB.) Despite their graphics being cut, their icons for the HUD still remain. They can be accessed under RAM address 00B9 with these values:

  • 00 - Kyu (Kyo)
  • 01 - Benimary (Benimaru)
  • 03 - Terry
  • 04 - Andy
  • 05 - Joe
  • 06 - Ryo
  • 07 - Kim
  • 0A - Ralf
  • 0B - Athena
  • 0C - Kasumi
  • 0E - Mai
  • 0F - Geese
  • 10 - Wolfgang

Unused Music

Track 4 - Street Fighter Zero 2 '97 ending

Most likely a leftover from using that game as a base and was never intended to be used.

Track 5 - Unused Stage Track 1

Track 10 - Unused Stage Track 2

Both of these tracks appear near the other stage tracks, which was probably meant for...

Unused Stages

KOF96NES UnusedStage.png

At 0410, there appears to be three values that should contain stages: 00, 02, and 05. However, only their palette data, tile layout and animations remain. (It's recommended you try this in FCEUX and change the address before the fight begins.)

Interestingly enough, the way the stage tracks line up with the stage order in the address should imply 02 has no music track related to it. 01 has track 6 from the NSF which should mean 00 has track 5 and 02 has track 7...but 03 uses track 7 instead. All of the other stages afterwards line up with their tracks properly. It's possible that even in the original version, 02 was an unused stage.

Unused Text String

BB20 contains this unused text string:

LET'S HIT THE STREETS

It's highly unlikely this was intended for this game but Hummer Team did port over Final Fight 3 to the NES where this does appear in the intro.

Easter Egg

King of Fighters 96, The (NES)-easter.png

A generic JY Company easter egg is still present inside the game. At the title screen, press Down, Down, Left, Up, Right, Left, Up, Down. Just like the other unused cutscenes above, this one is missing actual CHR data. It can't be found anywhere inside the CHR-ROM. It seems to be the full-screen JY logo used in most games they publish.
