So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Hmmm...
To do:
Add more information from here and here, as well as the test rooms

The first (and only) localized Starfy game.

Version Differences
Gameplay elements that differ between the Japanese and international versions.

Helpful Stuff Feature

"Helpful Stuff" (Japanese: おたすけグッズ), as a special type of the Stuff (known in the Japanese version as Goods) used for Starfy's transformations is an unused feature that is mentioned various times in the ROM. It is possible that the feature was obsoleted by Bunston's Transformations in the final game.

It may also be relevant to the unused transformation sprites detailed in this article later below.

The below character dialog (seemingly from a trial or tech demo at an unknown event significantly before development of the game had finished compared to the English kiosk demo) details how the feature would have worked. Certain Helpful Stuff would have elemental attributes, making them more favorable over others for certain bosses.

Yo! It's Moe! The best-seller Moe, whose first two works sold nearly 400,000 copies!

Huh? Recently? I haven't heard anything recently. It'd be nice to soak in the glory of the past!

This time I'm going to keep complaining to myself on the bottom screen...

So far I'm mostly complaining about the explanation of the story!

Sometimes there'll be stuff like hints in hidden places, so don't miss anything! Okay?

First of all, you should make sure you talk to everyone you find.

Let's get this event going! Don't miss the branching room!

Well, those who think it's too much work can ignore the branches and continue forward.

I don't know if that'll make it harder in the future, though...

This time is the debut of the two-player communication room. It supports one-cartridge and multi-cartridge!

It's made to feel pretty easy by yourself but even easier with two people.

This is a room where you move using Helpful Stuff.

That's the action I've referred to as "vehicle" up until now. Yep, yep.

This time there are 8 different types of Helpful Stuff. They're in special rooms and you can even use them in boss battles!

In the special rooms are a variety devices saturated with attributes like fire and ice, however...

You can easily pass through if you use Helpful Stuff with an effective attribute...

But if you choose an unhelpful attribute, it'll be more difficult.

This is the room before a boss battle. In here, you'll have a conversation with the boss as usual.

It hasn't been made yet, but you'll be able to change into Helpful Stuff and choose to challenge the boss

by yourself or with a friend. Of course, if you're impatient it's okay to just challenge the boss one-on-one!

This is the boss battle room. This boss is a little different from the others. There are attributes like... fire, ice, and poison, so...

The fight might be to your advantage or disadvantage depending on the attribute of the Helpful Stuff.

Also, you can do this in two-player mode, so if you're really bad at it, find someone better to help!

Leftover Densetsu no Stafy 4 Text

A large amount of text from the previous game in the series, Densetsu no Stafy 4, can be found at offset 0161CFC5 (0161C1C5 in the Japanese version) and finishes at 01630A23 (Japanese version: 01631823).

Placeholder Text

  • Dummy (Japanese: ダミー): This text is related to Starfy's abilities. It's found after the Super Vanish description as "Dummy 9" and "Dummy 10", with descriptions "Dummy line 2" and "Dummy line 3". This could be relevant to the unused costume sprites found in the game detailed below.
  • In the Japanese version only, there is ability 20-40 too, after the Shooting Star ability text.
  • Helpful Stuff 9 and Helpful Stuff 10 (Japanese: おたすけグッズ9/10). These are found after the Super Bugawk/Super Vanish ability text in both the Japanese and English versions.
  • In the Japanese version only, text can be found for "ないよう" (translating to "detail" or "content") multiple times in the in-game Notes feature's dialog. Names for Notes 58-100 also exist. Related text does not appear in the North American version.
  • "なし" (i.e. "none") entries can be found many times in the text after the last track in the sound test (Results Screen).
  • "キョロしゃべりまくりモード テスト" ("Moe Chat Tuck-in Mode Test?") appears many times in the Japanese ROM. The nature of the text is unknown.

Mermaid Gossip

The following messages for the Mermaid Gossip Touch Screen feature are unused.

  • Screens in Tandem (Japanese:
  • 2nd week extra data (Japanese:

Curiously, in the North American version they are marked with "[NOT SURE IF THIS COPY APPEARS IN GAME]".

Unused Backgrounds

Some of the stage backgrounds are leftover from Densetsu no Stafy 4, such as Lobber's Villa and Tear Lake. They can be found in invalid rooms.

Unused Graphics

Costumes

Graphics for unused costumes for Starfy and Starly (aka Stapy) can be found:

  • Mermaid Suit: It has swift swimming moves. Oddly enough, graphics for hiding in a shell as well as big heart graphics can be found: these are normally animations for the save mermaid.
  • Frog Suit: Has animations for extending his tongue, and spinning.
  • Cockroach Suit (Starfy only): Has flying animation (with Starfy visibly tired), sleeping animations, and one for whipping enemies.

Other

A tall yellow creature. Possibly a test graphic?
