Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Look into which treasure the game fails to keep track of - and whether it's actually a bug (the ending text may suggest that it's deliberate).

Journey to the cent(re/er) of the Earth and collect all 11 treasures to get an awesome ending!

Unused Ending

...Or not. Sorry, intro text.

Unfortunately, a bug results in the game failing to track one of the treasures, resulting in the ending not being accessible.

When hyperbole fails
Luckily, there is a workaround: change memory address B7E9 to 0A, then pick up a treasure from underground and put it on the surface to trigger the ending.

The only difference between this ending and dying is the different (incredibly ironic) message. It even plays the dying tune when the treasure is put down.
