Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PlayStation)/Unused Voice Clips

This is a sub-page of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PlayStation).

There are various voice clips which can be found on the game disc. The files have been arranged in the order they are suspected to play in. The order of files are not all in order on the game disc and many Japanese voice clips are also present. The untranslated Japanese voice clips are not included here but a handful amount of them are not used even in the Japanese version.

Many of the voice clips can actually be heard in the "Sound Mode" of Sega Saturn version after completing the game once, where it will add a shifting icon as the entrance of voice clip mode. Those clips are only in Japanese, however.

Royal Chapel

Dialogue for the confessional room.

The Japanese version plays a clip in this area, as well as an altered version in the Dracula X Chronicles version. This dialogue comes from the second game in the series, where the ferrymen speeches also come from.

Colosseum

Maria Encounter

Unknown Maria encounter. May be in the Marble Gallery when getting the Holy Glasses. The Dracula X Chronicles port version used variants of similar dialogue for the Maria fight event.

Holy Glasses

Richter Battle

This voice clip matches more of the original Japanese dialogue than the one used in the final, in the usage of verbs - both has longer sentences to praise Alucard's power, but was changed in the final for some reason.

Richter (groans) Probably meant for after Shaft's orbs defeat after equipping the Holy Glasses.

Richter Saved

The PSP version has some of this dialogue after the battle with Richter and if you go back to the normal castle before going too far into the inverted castle. Richter and Maria would be standing in the same place you left them when the character ventures into the inverted castle.

Shaft Meeting

Alternate dialogue of the Shaft encounter in the inverted castle.

Technical explanation: There're triggers that will determine the dialogue's variation in the Dracula X Chronicles port. If the dialogue that defeated and saved Richter mentioned about Shaft's name occurs, Alucard will "know" about Shaft's name, and cause this alternate dialogue appear. The PS1 US version didn't have the dialogue variation triggers, or anything else that is possibly to become the trigger.

Unused Ending

A series of unused dialogue can be found among the game's sound files which seem to be part of an unfinished ending. It suggests that Maria could have intervened during the Richter fight and saved Richter herself, but would have subsequently become possessed or transformed by Shaft. It seems to include both winning and losing quotes for a prospective evil Maria battle, and ends with Alucard reflecting on the apparent passing of both Richter and Maria after she makes the castle collapse. Koji Igarashi later confirmed the existence of a removed ending where events closely ressemble the ones apparently happening in the dialogue.[1] While Maria can be fought (and played as) in the later Saturn and PSP editions, it is not under the same circumstances and does not result in a new ending.

Regardless, no sprites were found that appear to be related to these mysterious recordings, though Yoshinori Suzuki did briefly talk in the developer's notes of the Saturn version about an unused set of sprites for another version of Maria, tentatively called "Black Maria". Her attacks were completely different from the regular "light version".

As to the identity of the "four demons" in the cut dialogue, it's worth noting that in his boss fight in Rondo of Blood, Shaft summoned the first four bosses from the original Castlevania which had to be defeated to reach him: the Giant Bat, Medusa, Mummy, and The Creature. These same four bosses do appear in the final version of Symphony of the Night, but they appear separately across the Reverse Castle, after Alucard has already saved Richter with Maria's help.

some dark force was behind Maria's transformation, but it doesn't matter
now.
