In another one of those port-of-a-port situations, Earthworm Jim on the Game Gear is pretty much just the Game Boy version with the added color and worse audio that comes with the territory of being a Game Gear game. Oh yeah, and a massive, ugly, pixelated HUD.

Level Select Text

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Could actually be in-game (pre-stage) text, though not all of the strings may be used...

Stored at xF4A5 in the ROM is text for what appears to be a level select:

NEW JUNK CITY
WHAT THE HECK?
SNOT A PROBLEM
FOR PETE>S SAKE
SNOWMAN BOSS
