Final Fantasy IV Advance is a port of the WonderSwan Color remake of Final Fantasy IV with additional features, the biggest of which are the ability to choose your own party for the final dungeon and a huge semi-random post game dungeon. Unfortunately, the port seems to have been rushed, and as a result numerous bugs are present, especially in the first releases.

This version of the game served as the basis for all future ports, outside of the Nintendo DS and iOS versions, and for Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

That opening text up there isn't kidding: The original releases had even more bugs!

Unused Graphics

Hmmm...
To do:
Dig into the compressed graphics some more.

This time he's obviously playing a limited edition GBA Micro with FF4 faceplate. And cursing the tiny-ass font he can't read.

Kain's unused casting animation from the SNES version is still present.

"Float, float I'm a goat...err, ghost."

Only one of Anna's unused frames is still present. If paired with her other frame, which is used in Edward's battle at Kaipo, it would look like she was walking or her dress was billowing in the wind.

Not only is this unused, the coiled sprite is used backwards.

In the original game, whips have a two frame animation, with a coiled sprite for when Rydia swings it behind herself and an extended sprite for the actual strike. Only the coiled sprite is used in this version, but the extended sprite is still included with the whip graphics.

Hmmm...
To do:
There may be other cases of sprites having colors which are never used. The WSC remake merged the red and blue palettes from the original into one and duplicated a bunch of the sprites that were originally just palette swaps. The purple palette is still separate, but has enough variations from the red/blue palette that it also required its own sprites.

Blue! Purple!

Blue and purple tossed dress sprites. Only the red sprite is used.

*tank sound effects*

The unused tank frames were touched up...

Now with outline.

...As was the white flag.

It's a good thing this wasn't used for Edward's battle, but it really should have been in Rosa's trial.

This battle BG was clearly intended to be used for town exteriors, but Edward's story battle in Kaipo still uses a night variation of the grassy field BG, and Rosa's trial in the Lunar Ruins uses the castle interior BG despite taking place outside.

Hmmm...
To do:
Golbez has KO, stone, toad, and pig portraits. No mini though, strangely. Also, all of the KO and stone portraits are stored as the full portraits used in dialogue, not just the cropped portion seen in the menu.

No wonder they weren't used, they look terrible.

These large item and magic icons are found as a part of the dialogue font. Icons are never drawn using this font.

OK, take that back, THESE look terrible!

Likewise, these squished icons are found in one of the menu fonts, which is also never used to draw icons.

Hammertime: 2005 Remix.

The hammer icon from the SNES version is still present and still unused. It can also be seen in the unused icon sets above.

HP MP

These little HP and MP sprites were used in the windows in battle in the WSC version. They're stored with the rest of the battle numeral and status sprites, but aren't used in this version: MP uses standard text and HP is unlabeled.

Miss!!

There's actually a duplicate copy of the aforementioned battle graphics in the North American version; the only difference between them and the ones that are used is that the miss sprite is still in Japanese. This duplicate file was removed from the European version.

Unused Items

The unused weapons from the SNES original are still present and descriptions have been written for them:

  • Hand Axe - Common axe.
  • Assassin's Dagger - Dagger that sometimes finishes enemy in one blow.
  • None - none

An Assassin's Dagger is available in the Lunar Ruins, but it uses separate item data from the original.

The following items hint that one of the Lunar Ruins floors was originally intended to be more complex:

  • Muddy Water - Black, muddy water.
  • Raggedy Doll - Something an old man would have...

These items are "bad" counterparts to the Clear Water and Doll that must be obtained in the final version.

Unused Commands

Hmmm...
To do:
See if this is actually functional, or just unused text.
  • Dbl Mtr - Double Meteor. Likely originally intended to replace the Twin command when the Twin Stars are equipped on Porom and Palom.

Unused Text

Save 4

Several strings mention a fourth save slot. The manual also shows four save slots, but the final game is limited to three saves.

Debug Menu

Text strings exist for an extensive debug menu, offering much more than the debug room left in the game. Some of these are used, incorrectly, in the debug room. All of these strings were removed from the European version.

Namingway's options for hiragana, katakana, or Roman characters were also translated.

Lunar Ruins

Hmmm...
To do:
Hack in the unused items, see if the event code is still set up to display these.
The lifeless tree looks deader than before...

The boy seems to be frightened by the man.

Text strings that would've been used when the Muddy Water and Raggedy Doll were used in place of the correct item. The latter string doesn't really fit in the final version of the game since the door the doll is needed for is engraved with a picture of a girl.

Debug Room

FF4GBA-debugroom.png

The US/Australian version has a small debug room. Enter the following GameShark codes and load a save game to enter it:

7200E002 000C
8200E04E 015D
7200E002 000C
8200E3C4 0078
7200E002 000C
8200E3C8 0068

Upon loading, you will only be able to walk a small distance from the starting tile. Open and close the menu to correct this; the location window in the menu calls the debug room Search 349. The save point in the center of the room is not functional. There are six NPCs with debugging options - unfortunately, they use incorrect text strings, but with the exception of the dancer, each NPC only does one thing so this isn't really an issue.

(GameShark code and collision info: DarkSerge)

Dancer

The dancer controls your party and the event flags that are currently set. Choosing YES will set the party and event flags listed in the table, then advance to the next option. Choose NO after getting the party and flags you want.

Option Party Notes
UP 0 Cecil, Kain
  • Gives you one of each key item from the original game.
  • None of the events in the Mist cave have taken place.
  • Using the Elder to access the world map seems to set other events to a later state, preventing the events at Mist from triggering.
UP 1 Cecil
  • Landslide at Mist has occurred.
  • Cecil's sprite will become a dark knight and he'll say "I have to find her a place to rest" upon entering Kaipo, but he does not walk to the inn. The inn map will load after a short time anyway, but the rest of the event does not play out. This occurs any time you step on the first tile inside Kaipo's walls, effectively trapping you in the village.
LEFT 0 Cecil, Rydia
  • After Rydia joins the party in Kaipo.
  • Tellah will join the party in the Underground Waterway.
LEFT 1 Cecil, Rydia, Tellah
  • The Octomammoth has been defeated.
  • Damcyan has been bombed; its world map graphics do not reflect this.
  • The events with Anna will play out as normal.
RIGHT 0 Cecil, Rydia, Edward
  • From this event on, the hovercraft is available outside Damcyan.
  • Damcyan uses its destroyed world map graphics.
  • The antlion has yet to be defeated.
RIGHT 1 Cecil, Rydia, Edward
  • The antlion has been defeated.
Look down Cecil, Rydia, Edward, Rosa
  • After Rosa joins the party in Kaipo.
OH 0 Cecil, Rydia, Edward, Rosa, Yang
  • Mom Bomb has been defeated.
  • The game will softlock during the battle of Fabul, after the Red Wings start bombing the castle.
OH 1 Cecil, Rydia, Edward, Yang
  • Likely after the battle of Fabul, however using the Elder to warp to the world map will result in Cecil getting stuck in the ocean where the Lunar Whale's whirlpool usually appears.
DEAD Cecil
  • Mt. Ordeals cannot be entered due to the barrier of fire.
  • Likely intended to test the initial Mysidia events, but using the Elder to access the map sets Mysidia's events to those after Cecil becomes a paladin.
ETC 0 Cecil, Palom, Porom
  • Palom will unseal Mt. Ordeals.
  • Tellah will join at station three.
  • Scarmiglione is not present at the summit and the events where Cecil becomes a paladin will not play out.
ETC 1 Cecil, Palom, Porom, Tellah
  • All Mt. Ordeals events have already taken place.
  • The Devil's Road has not been unsealed.
ETC 2 Cecil, Palom, Porom, Tellah, Yang
  • If Cecil is still a dark knight, this option will make him a paladin.
  • Baron's armor and weapons shop and the Old Waterway have been unlocked.
  • Baigan has not been defeated.
ETC 3 Cecil, Cid, Tellah, Yang
  • The events after defeating Cagnazzo have played out.
  • From this event on, the Enterprise is available outside Baron.
  • Edward has yet to be spoken to in Troia.
ETC 4 Cecil, Cid, Tellah, Yang
  • Edward has been spoken to.
  • The Dark Elf has not yet been defeated.
ETC 5 Cecil, Cid, Tellah, Yang
  • Kain will order you to board your airship upon entering the Clerics' chamber in Troia. He will approach the party wherever the Enterprise is located, however it will always descend from the Tower into the clearing outside Troia.
  • After Kain's confrontation, the Lunar Whale's flight panel and crystal are disabled, behavior not seen in a normal game.
ETC 6 Cecil, Cid, Tellah, Yang
  • The Enterprise will not take you to the Tower of Zot when boarded, leaving you stranded with no way to advance the game short of going to the moon.
ETC 7 Cecil, Cid, Kain, Rosa, Yang
  • After Tower of Zot events.
  • The crater at Agart has not been opened.
ETC 8 Cecil, Cid, Kain, Rosa, Yang
  • The Agart crater is open from this event on.
  • The Enterprise will be attacked upon entering the underworld.
ETC 9 Cecil, Cid, Kain, Rosa, Yang
  • Cid will leave and the Calcobrina event will play out when entering the Dwarf Castle throne room.
Title Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa, Yang
  • The guards blocking access to most sections of the Dwarf Castle are removed.
  • The Dwarf tanks are positioned outside the Tower of Babel.
Square-Enix logo Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa
  • Golbez will burn the Tower of Babel's stairs upon entering. For whatever reason, you must get into a battle before the tower's entrance will work.
  • Interestingly, from this event on it is possible to have Cid upgrade the airship to fly over magma. Doing so when the underworld Tower of Babil is accessible will allow you to enter the tower while in the airship.
Start from beginning Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa
  • Cid's assistants will attach the hook to the Enterprise.
Opening 1 Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa
  • The hook has been attached to the Enterprise.
Cecil and Kain's Departure Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa, Edge
  • None of the Tower of Babel events have taken place.
Earth to Moon Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa, Edge
  • The Falcon is available outside the Tower of Babel in the underworld. It cannot fly over magma yet.
  • Giott will order the party to the Sealed Cave upon entering the Dwarf Castle throne room.
Moon to Earth Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa, Edge
  • Giott has already ordered the party to go to the Sealed Cave.
  • Upon entering the infirmary, the end of the event where Cid attaches the drill to the Falcon will play out. The Falcon will have the drill after this and you can use it to leave the underworld, but the airships still cannot fly over magma.
Solar System Cecil, Rydia, Rosa, Edge
  • The Tower of Babel is shielded.
  • Cid will attach the drill to the Falcon upon entering the Dwarf Castle throne room.
Telescope Cecil, Rydia, Rosa, Edge
  • Likely the event where the Lunar Whale is raised, however using the Elder to warp plays this event automatically.
Mysidian Legend Cecil, Rydia, Rosa, Edge
  • The Lunar Whale has been raised.
Cedits Cecil, Rydia, FuSoYa, Rosa, Edge
  • The Giant of Babel events will start as soon as you enter the overworld map.
Sight Cecil, Rydia, Kain, Rosa, Edge
  • The Giant of Babel has been defeated.

Mysidian Elder

Teleports the party to the Tower of Prayers. Cecil is always reset to his initial Paladin stats after this. Depending on which event flags are set, either the events when the Lunar Whale is raised or when the Cave of Trials opens will play out. From here, the Lunar Whale can be used to travel anywhere on the overworld, which allows for easy testing of various events when paired with the dancer's options.

Shopkeeper

A lot of this "best" equipment really isn't.

Sets all characters' equipment to whatever their strongest weapon and shield in the original game was, Glass Mask, Adamant Armor, and Crystal Ring. The weapon choices are usually good, but can be a bit odd - Rydia ends up with a Wind Spear in her left hand, for example. Cecil gets the Ragnarok and Crystal Shield regardless of what his current class is.

Cecil gets two Cure spells.

Characters with magic commands will also have those filled with all of that command's appropriate spells, even if they normally couldn't learn them.

Golbez

Shows the ending sequence, starting with the Mysidian Legend displayed in front of the solar system.

FuSoYa

Starts the Giant of Babel event.

White Mage

Shows the ending sequence, starting with the Lunar Whale descending into the sea. No music is played until the telescope scene.
