Fire Emblem: Three Houses/Unused System Text

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

There is an absolute wealth of text relating to abandoned gameplay and system features.

Focuses

Multiple strings allude to an earlier "focus" system, in which you would select one of the eleven skills as the area of focus for a month's lessons. Skill experience gained by instruction would be boosted for that one skill as long as the focus was in effect; the efficacy of these focuses would have increased with your professor level.

amiibo Messages

These unused strings seem to imply that the game's amiibo compatibility features originally would have worked somewhat differently.

Text (JP) Text (EN) Notes
Received (name). In the final game, the item rewards for scanning amiibo appear as collectible spawns around the amiibo gazebo that must be picked up manually, rather than being delivered directly by the scanning process like in these messages.
Received (name) x (n).
You can't receive any more presents from this amiibo character today. In the final game, there is no limit to the amount of amiibo you can scan, though only the first one used affects the items received. This five-presents-a-day scenario matches the way amiibo rewards work in Fire Emblem Warriors, though the messages that game uses for these situations are worded differently.
You can receive amiibo presents up to five times per day.
This amiibo is not compatible with Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The only Fire Emblem game that's compatible with some amiibo but not all of them is Fates, though the message that game uses for this situation is worded differently.

Cut Group Tasks

While the final game only has four used group tasks, it seems that more were planned. Unlike the used ones, none of these specify skills that would improve by doing them.

Alternate Activity Points Scheme

In the final game, the player is given a maximum of 10 activity points each week to spend on using monastery facilities. However, some text strings suggest that an alternate scheme was planned in which more activity points would be available, but would be consumed by many more activities, and would be counted on a per-month basis rather than a per-week basis.

  • Another alternate English name for what the final game calls Morfis! Additionally, "Regan" is called Riegan in the final English script.
  • "Gwydion" may be an early name for the Gideon region of Faerghus, as seen on the early world map in the E3 2018 trailer (which also uses the "Regan" label). Kupala is only otherwise referenced in DLC-related content added in the Version 1.2.0 update on February 13, 2020, and "Miach" is not mentioned at all in any part of the final game.

Directions/Mounted Training

There are a number of strings which seem to be describing different permutations of the same concept: a series of hunting and training expeditions, often suggested to involve riding on horseback. How related they really were is anybody's guess, but for convenience's sake they're being lumped together here. Rewards evidently may have included training in proficiency in focused areas of some sort, and/or hunting wild game.

Notes:

  • The rest of the English script spells the mentioned mountain range as "Oghma", not "Ogma" (possibly to not step on the toes of the important Archanean character), suggesting the translated strings were left alone after an initial pass.
  • The Itha region is only mentioned once in the entire final game, in the library's history of House Blaiddyd as the home of Dimitri's regent, Rufus.

Horse Raising

There are very few surviving text strings that relate to this feature, and as such very little information on what it could have entailed. In the final game, there is no way whatsoever to interact with or customize horses; no Fire Emblem game has ever had anything in that vein either, but Shouzou Kaga's post-Fire Emblem game, Berwick Saga, did feature a variety of equippable horses with different stats.

Cooking

Two additional features were intended for the meal preparation activity: some sort of method of keeping the meals for later use rather than consuming and benefiting from them immediately at the monastery, and an alternate option to cook alone as a counterpart to cooking with an ally. (These "Cooking Alone" strings are also accompanied by strings specifying "Cooking Together"; in the final game, these were often replaced with strings just generically calling it "cooking" due to a lack of need to tell two different cooking modes apart.)

Unused Dishes

There are surviving text assets for a total of 25 unused meals whose effects tie into the cut ability to eat them outside of the dining hall. However, the way they are organised and what is actually there is... a little complicated.

  • For some reason, Three Houses actually keeps two batches of text for its meals in the same file:
    • Batch 1 (100 entries, of which all but the first 25 are placeholders), located earlier in the menu text file, contains only unused meals.
      • Entries for matching help strings exist, but are all blank.
    • Batch 2 (255 entries, of which all but the first 31 are placeholders), located much later in the menu text file, contains the 13 used meals from the final game, followed by 18 unused ones.
      • This batch does have help strings, albeit only in certain languages (see below).
  • The two batches overlap quite neatly:
    • The first 13 entries of batch 1 are the first 13 unused meals, while the first 13 of batch 2 are the used meals.
    • Entries 14-25 of both are identical, suggesting that the two were originally identical before batch 2 overwrote thirteen of the unused meals with the used ones.
    • Entries 26-31 are blank in batch 1, but continue with the last six unused meals in batch 2.

The following list of unused dishes is synthesized from both batches based on that overlap.

How much text is there for each varies drastically by language:

  • In all cases, absolutely no Japanese text survives, leaving the slots blank or just putting placeholder text in there.
  • For batch 1, every language except Japanese gives every unused one a name string, although in every language except the two Spanish scripts, it's just left in English.
  • For batch 2:
    • Their name strings survive in full only in the US English, Canadian French, Latin American Spanish, and Italian translations; Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese have only the first twelve of them, blanking the subsequent slots like Japanese.
    • Their description strings survive in full only in the Latin American Spanish script. Again, Korean and the two Chinese scripts only cover the first twelve meals, blanking the rest.

All but four of the dishes (Albinea grill, fish & fowl pie, magical herb salad, whole roast grouse) come in two variants: a regular one, and a + variant that has been "cooked to perfection" and describes having a stronger effect. Two of the dishes (grilled chicken & herbs, roast duck) also have a third variant which, although they have the same name as the regular one, describes having a weaker effect.

Online Statistics

Near the used strings for online statistics, there's a second batch of more specific variants which break down demographics for the four individual story routes, rather than the general ones used in the final game. The only statistic with no such variants is, unsurprisingly, the certification success one, since its subject is rather route-agnostic.

Combined/Composite Classes

A handful of unused text strings, plus assets for an unused "combined seal" item, allude to an additional category of class variously referred to as "combined classes" and "composite jobs". Unfortunately, the mere fact of their existence is all that we know; what exactly they could have entailed is a total mystery.

Alternate Command List

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Does any functionality for the unused commands (or their equivalents in the final list) survive in the final game?

There is an unused duplicate of the list of commands a unit can carry out after moving, which uses earlier translations for some entries and even has a few unused command names left over.

Text (JP) Text (EN) Notes
Attack --
Arts Translated as "Combat Arts" in the final game. This early translation also appeared in prerelease footage from the Nintendo Direct 2019 trailer (despite the "Combat Arts" translation having been used in the E3 2018 trailer previously).
Dance --
回復 White Magic Translated as "Assist" in the final game.
装備 Equip This command is also present (though unused) in the final list, and appeared in prerelease footage from the E3 2018 trailer. In the final game, equipping items is handled through the Items command instead.
Possessions Translated as "Items" in the final game.
Trade --
Convoy

待機 Wait
Dismount

Seize
Arms
Formation This command is also present (though unused) in the final list, and appeared in prerelease footage from the E3 2018 trailer (with the background graphic used for commands that end the user's turn).
Linked Attack Dummied out in the final list. In the final game, Linked Attacks are a mechanic that automatically boosts affected attacks rather than a standalone attack type.
F Attack Dummied out in the final list. What "F" might have stood for is unknown.
計略 Gambit --
Lower Bridge Translated as "Bridge" in the final game.
解除 Disable Translated as "Lever" in the final game.
Open --
応援 Rally
Steal
転移 Teleport Translated as "Warp" in the final game.
Sothis's Protection Translated as "Sothis Shield" in the final game. This is the only used command that is also named differently in the Japanese script (it's 神祖の加護 in the final list).

Victory and Defeat Conditions

One string in the list used for victory conditions goes unused in the final game. It was likely meant for Salvation at the Chapel, as that map has unused event scripting to set Jeralt's AI to move towards the space (13, 3) and to end the map successfully when he gets there.

Text (JP) Text (EN)
Rout the enemy, or Jeralt reaches the target destination.

The list of defeat conditions has many more unused entries, often identifiable by a quirk of the localization—in used entries, "(character)の敗走" is consistently translated as "(character) falls in battle", but the unused ones translate it as "(character) is defeated" instead.

Text (JP) Text (EN) Notes
All of your units are defeated, or Rhea is defeated. Presumably meant for the non-Crimson Flower version of The Battle of Garreg Mach when played on Casual Mode. In the final game, the defeat condition used is instead "All of your units fall in battle, Rhea falls in battle, or the defended location is captured."
(Byleth), Edelgard, Mercedes, or Caspar is defeated. Presumably meant for Mercedes's and Caspar's paralogue when played during Crimson Flower and on Classic Mode. In the final game, this battle is not accessible on that route.
Edelgard is defeated. Possibly meant for Edelgard's paralogue when played on Casual Mode, given its position in the list of strings. In the final game, the defeat condition used is instead "Edelgard falls in battle, or the defended location is captured."
(Byleth), Annette, or Gilbert is defeated. Presumably meant for Annette's and Gilbert's paralogue when played during Silver Snow, Crimson Flower, or Verdant Wind, respectively, and on Classic Mode. In the final game, this battle is not accessible on those routes because Gilbert cannot be recruited.
(Byleth), Edelgard, Annette, or Gilbert is defeated.
(Byleth), Claude, Annette, or Gilbert is defeated.
(Byleth), Ingrid, or Dorothea is defeated. Posssibly meant for Ingrid's and Dorothea's paralogue when played during Silver Snow and on Classic Mode. In the final game, this battle is not accessible on that route because it is only available before the timeskip.
(Byleth), Edelgard, Lysithea, or Ferdinand is defeated. Presumably meant for Ferdinand's and Lysithea's paralogue when played during Crimson Flower and on Classic Mode. In the final game, this battle is not accessible on that route.
(Byleth), Edelgard, Hilda, or Cyril is defeated, ally units are defeated, or the defended location is captured. Presumably meant for Hilda's and Cyril's paralogue when played during Crimson Flower (or during the Black Eagles version of White Clouds before the route split) and on Classic Mode. In the final game, this battle is not accessible on those routes because Hilda cannot be recruited.
(Byleth) or ally units are defeated. In the final game, only specific named units are ever a defeat condition when falling in battle as an ally unit, though some maps give additional rewards at the end of the battle for keeping generic allies alive.
(Byleth), Edelgard, or ally units are defeated.
(Byleth), Dimitri, or ally units are defeated.
(Byleth), Claude, or ally units are defeated.
Dimitri or ally units are defeated.
Edelgard or ally units are defeated.
Claude or ally units are defeated.
(Byleth), Edelgard, Linhardt, or Leonie is defeated. Presumably meant for Linhardt and Leonie's paralogue when played during Crimson Flower and on Classic Mode. In the final game, Edelgard cannot be deployed in this battle.
Jeritza falls in battle. Presumably meant for Anna and Jeritza's paralogue. In the final game, Anna falling in battle is always also a defeat condition for this battle.
(Byleth) or Jeritza falls in battle.

Status Conditions

These name strings for unused status conditions have no corresponding description strings remaining, so what their effects might have been is unknown. That said, it can be assumed that "Cause and Effect" would've been granted by a gambit, as it's located among other conditions of that type (Sacred Shield, Retribution, etc.) and its Japanese name is worded similarly to theirs.

Popup and Objective Notifications

The strings for the system message popups that appear during monastery explorations and battles, as well as those for the current-objective sidebar text seen during explorations (aside from the ones tied to active quests), are stored in sets on a per-map basis, and some of these lists contain leftover entries that go unused in the final game.

If make a Formation[sic], you will create a battle formation. If you Disperse, the formation will be disbanded. No mechanic like this exists in the final game at all. However, a "Formation" command did appear in the game's initial E3 trailer in 2018, so perhaps this text is left over from that point in development?
While in a Formation, units will be strengthened. How so depends on the Formation type.
When the enemy is in Formation, it will be harder to destroy them unless your allies are also in Formation.
When units are dispersed, their movement is increase[sic], and you can use Combat Arts.
So you can choose whether to make a Formation and strengthen your units, or disperse and prioritize movement and Combat Arts.
Switch between the two options on the fly, depending on what you determine to be more effective.
Units in Formation will have their abilities enhanced depending on the Knights in their formation. "Knights" here is an early translation for Battalions, as seen in the unused tutorial guides.
Additionally, each group of Knights has a different gambit that you can employ.
Move a unit up to the treasure box, and you will be able to open it. Another mechanic explanation that's given using the built-in tutorial system rather than with this type of message in the final game.
Assault at the Rite of Rebirth (Chapter 4) 特定の床にいるユニットは、 防御系のパラメータが大きく強化されます。 Units in specified areas on the map will receive a boost to their defensive stats. In the final game, the special terrain types on this map are pointed out in dialogue but not explicitly described like this, probably because the player can just check their effects themselves on the map view at any time.
Prt will be boosted on this section of the map.
Res will be boosted on this section of the map.
Avo will be boosted on this section of the map.
Monsters are extremely tough enemies with powerful Barrier[sic], and they have multiple HP gauges. You can destroy their Barrier by attacking the same spot, or attacking with a strategy or an effective weapon. An explanation of monsters and their mechanics that covers the same points as the tutorials used for this purpose in the final game, though with more explicit details and from a neutral perspective instead of Sothis's.
"Fierce Attack" is an early, more literal translation for the attack type known as Staggering Blow in the finished localization.
When you destroy their Barrier during combat, the monster's Armor Abilities are nullified, and for the next battle only they will enter a Confused state in which they don't counterattack. It's also possible to use multiple people to repeatedly destroy the Barrier and defeat the enemy without being counterattacked.
Every other turn, monsters attempt to perform a powerful area attack called a Fierce Attack. Monsters will aim for units that attack with gambits, so dodge Fierce Attacks well as you use gambits.
When all Barriers have been broken, their armor will be broken, allowing you to get the following effects: - Get special items - The monster's Barrier will stop recovering - The monster will be unable to act on the next turn

(Monsters will aim at units that attack them with gambits. You can also control the direction of their Staggering Blow, so use gambits to help the students.)
iron_untranslated Some advice on how to protect the NPC units in this chapter, perhaps cut because the player has already been introduced to monster mechanics well before this point.
If you win the battle without defeating an enemy that has stolen a Crest Stone, that Crest Stone will be lost. Plan carefully. --

An event script to display this text during the battle does still exist in the final game, but goes unused. Likely refers to the unused movement scripting for the unrecruited version of Ingrid on this map, as its conditions indicate it would've appeared at the start of the battle if that version of her is present.
Foreign Land and Sky (Paralogue – Petra/Bernadetta) Petra temporarily left to call for reinforcements. Scripted to appear in the unused alternate version of Petra bringing reinforcements from the western stronghold, for moving the unused unrecruited version of Petra onto it.

Miscellaneous

This batch was found in the listings for battle missions. They seem to describe debugging options, including debug maps. There are two copies of these strings, identical to each other in Japanese; the first English instance (at the end of the list of mission names) is left untranslated, while the second is translated.

邪竜テスト iron_untranslated Fell Dragon test Another Fire Emblem Warriors leftover, where it would have been a test for Velezark. In Japanese, Velezark uses the same epithet as Grima, 邪竜 (evil dragon), but the two games translated them differently; Grima was called the "Fell Dragon", while Velezark became the "Chaos Dragon". The Three Houses localizers seem to have confused the latter for the former, not that it matters much.

These odd strings might've been meant for examinable locations in the monastery; there are two entries for each one's description text, which are identical in Japanese but translated differently in English. The first version of the descriptions is located next to the unused lost item descriptions, while the names and later descriptions are located with those of the collectable monastery texts.

"Assistants" here is an early translation for Adjutants. What "test battles"/"お試し出撃" might've referred to is unknown.

In the final game, talking to the NPCs for cooking, sharing a meal, or choir practice will bring up the relevant menu automatically rather than giving a yes/no prompt like this first.

Would you like to cook a meal?
Do you want to do some choir practice?
Invite people to share a meal?
Do you want to do choral practice?

The location and wording of these strings implies that they're referring to choir practice, which doesn't affect motivation in the final game (though the menu for selecting units to participate in it still displays their current motivation, perhaps as a relic from this stage of development), and can't be performed with fewer than three characters.

The two gained a significant amount of faith experience!

Somewhat less interestingly, there are also various alternate phrasings of description texts for monastery activities, some of which were blanked out in the Japanese script. The entries about identifying the author of a letter might've been meant for the Advice Box.

In the final game, teatime is only available as a choice when talking to a character at the monastery or on their birthday.

Text (JP) Text (EN)
You ran into (name). Invite them to tea?

You can increase support points on a character's birthday with a tea party or gifted flowers, but the birthday itself doesn't give any motivation or support points in the final game.

In the final game, none of the monastery activities that characters can have specific proficiencies in (cooking together, choir practice, being instructed in a particular subject, and completing particular group tasks) can increase motivation.

Text (JP) Text (EN)
