Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Windows, Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X)/Unused Dialogue
This is a sub-page of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Windows, Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X).
To do: The page is suuuuuuper big! Maybe it makes sense to split it into subpages? The pages could be grouped by characters similarly to how it was done on this page. At least 5 subpages would improve the page tremendously. |
Within the Language menu, it is possible to find many pieces of recorded dialogue that are left unused in the game, along with their respective subtitles or text. There are also some files not mentioned in the menu which can only be heard by extracting them from the game's archives. It should be noted that some subtitles have missing punctuation marks. The majority of the following clips were also recorded in every language the game was dubbed in (Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish). Some of these audio clips were used in the PlayStation version of the game. The files were not really arranged in a convenient fashion, so they will be sorted by speaker here.

Harry Potter
With well over 100 unique recordings not used anywhere, Harry Potter himself has more unused dialogue than any other character in the game. Most of them are general lines that could have been used where applicable in various levels, but ended up being unused likely to prevent Harry from being too annoying or because many of his hints were deemed unnecessary.

The following lines were likely meant for one of Harry's encounters with Malfoy, whether it be the duel with the Wizard Crackers or the Remembrall Chase level.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |

127Harry1 | I'll get you! | |
127Harry2 | I'll stop you, Malfoy! | |
harry_24 | Give it back, Malfoy! | |
harry_267 | I think I can throw the Wizard Crackers back at Malfoy. |
These are lines that would have been used in the Fireseed Caves level. While Harry does use a couple of these lines in-game, the variant he uses is all one recording while these are separate, different takes.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
harry_239 | Those hanging rocks look a bit loose. | |
harry_271b | That must be a Fire Seed plant. | |
harry_272 | Hagrid told me to stay away from the hot seeds. | |

The following are lines that were likely intended for the Potions Class levels.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
harry_86 | I should stay away from the Bloody Baron. | |
harry_141 | I've still got the Wiggenweld potion ingredients. | |
harry_dungeon_01 | I think that's one of the ingredients Snape asked me to get! | |
harry_dungeon_07 | I still need to look for Snape's potion ingredients... |
These lines were very likely intended for the sneak levels. One of these is actually a different take of a line Harry actually does use in the game.

harry_21 | Filch might hear me. | |
harry_121 | I'm invisible! | |

harry_250 | Where did Filch go? | |
harry_271 | The tower at last! I hope Charlie is here. |
And finally, here are some lines that were perhaps intended for the final levels that take place in the forbidden corridor.

harry_233 | Ouch! This Devil's Snare hurts! | |

Hedwig delivers two letters from Hermione to Harry over the course of the game, but he says nothing upon opening them. He also never gets a letter from Hagrid or Dumbledore.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
harry_148 | It's a letter from Hedwig! | |
harry_500 | A letter from Hermione! | |
harry_501 | A letter from Hagrid! | |
harry_502 | A letter from Dumbledore! | |
harry_6 | A letter from Hedwig! |
While Harry uses numerous interjections throughout the game, there are still a handful that ultimately went unused. A good chunk of additional recordings exist in the HAR_emotes.uax archive, separate from the rest of the game's dialogue, hence why they have no subtitle or text associated with them.

The lines below would have been used during the sneak levels where Harry whispers his spells, but he never has to use Incendio in these levels. However, at the start of the second sneak level, it is for some reason possible to cast Incendio on Mrs. Norris behind the first locked door. One can reach this iteration of Mrs. Norris using cheats or by standing on the railing of the bridge, breaking a vase with Flipendo to make Filch go back, then using Alohamora on the door ahead and casting Incendio on Mrs. Norris until Filch arrives. The first three files are not included in the Language menu, instead being stored in the archive containing Harry's spell incantations.

The following are mainly recordings of Harry reading the names of most of the people featured on the wizard cards. Harry never reads the cards aloud in this game, although he does in the PlayStation version. In most dubs of this game, these lines are read by the narrator instead, as an early sound archive indicates that these originally would have been read by the narrator. The Russian dub still has these read by their voice actor for Harry.

111RonandHerm4 | She's rather annoying, isn't she? |
Ron was probably supposed to say this near the beginning of the game. In the PlayStation version, Ron says this after the first Quidditch match, leading up to a level devoted to finding a Sloth brain for Potions class.

111RonInfo7 | Do you collect Famous Witches and Wizards cards? The rumor is, a full set wins a special prize! |

144Ron2 | Harry, you distract the troll, and I'll find Hermione. |
Ron never laughs in the game nor does he emote very often. However, some of his laughs and moans were sneakily used for other characters. For instance, one of his laughs is used by his brothers Fred and George during the game's ending.

These lines would have been used during the fight with the troll. Oddly, while the game makes it look as though Ron is asking Hermione if she's alright, it's actually a voice clip of Harry, leaving the actual recording by Ron's voice actor unused.

Harry doesn't talk to Hermione before the first Quidditch match either, leaving these unused here. These also got used in the PlayStation version, at the same point Ron's first two lines are.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |

121Hermione1 | Everyone's talking about you becoming a seeker, Harry. Why, you're the youngest Seeker at Hogwarts in a century! | |
141HermioneC2 | Ron and I will be cheering you from the stands. Good luck, Harry! |
These lines may have been meant for the level after the first Quidditch match, where she first suggests checking out the forbidden corridor. These are again used in the PlayStation version.

131HermioneB1 | Harry, I've been waiting for ages. | |

131HermioneB3 | That must be where the stolen object is! | |

This line was probably cut due to having an obvious grammatical error.

144Herm_Ron2 | On the third floor, I heard a monstrous, terrifying sounds behind one of the doors. |
Hagrid never tells Harry about the song he used to play to Fluffy, leaving these unused.

145Herm_Ron2 | Of course! Harry, do you remember that Hagrid said that he used to calm Fluffy with music! | |
145Herm_Ron3 | Try to play the tune that Hagrid mentioned to put each of Fluffy's heads to sleep. Be careful though--he looks ferocious! |
These lines imply that at one point, Harry was meant to travel to the forbidden corridor entrance by himself. Instead, they all head straight to the entrance.

HERMIONE_030 | We have to get the Stone first! Ron and I will meet you on the third floor, at the doorway to the forbidden corridor. | |
P111Hermione10 | Ron and I will meet you on the third floor by the doorway that leads to Fluffy. We have to get the Stone first! | |

HERMIONE_042 | That must mean that tonight's the night! Let's go! | |
HERMIONE_043 | We'll just have to take our chances then! |
These are unused lines that seem to be intended for the levels in the forbidden corridor, many of them being slight variations of lines that are used.

And finally, Hermione has one unused holler that could have been used at several points in the game.

EmotiveHermione15 | ahh! |
Draco Malfoy
These are mostly slightly different versions of what Malfoy normally says before and after the brief duel with Harry. The alternate post-duel line was used in the PlayStation version as the line ending the duel.

MALFOY_007 | You're a nuisance, Potter! | |

This was likely meant to be used shortly before the Remembrall Chase level.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |

Like several other characters, Malfoy has several recordings of laughter, only a couple of which go unused.

125Malfoy_Emotives3 | Heh heh hehhh! |
Neville Longbottom
Neville was probably supposed to say these lines before the outdoor levels.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
121Neville4 | Have fun exploring the grounds. See you later! | |
121Neville6 | My gran would send me a 'Howler' if I lost poor Trever! Never mind, though, he's quite safe. | |
neville_hall_3 | I'll see you at Herbology in a little while. |
These were also most likely meant to be used before the Remembrall Chase level, but only 121NevilleA3 ("Please help me.") is used. These were used in the PlayStation version for the same purpose: to lead into the Remembrall Chase level.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
121Neville3 | I need my Remembrall to remind me where my toad, Trevor, is. | |
121NevilleA1 | Malfoy stole my Remembrall! | |
121NevilleA2 | He ran off onto the school grounds with it. I need the Remembrall to find my toad! | |
121NevilleA4 | C'mon I'll show you where he went! |
Fred and George Weasley
It's unclear which of the two is speaking since they have the same voice actor, and there's no indication which one was meant to say what. They got different voice tones to improve distinguishing in the sequel, though.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |

fred_george_new_95 | No? Keep looking then, come back with 25 and we'll give you a wizard card. | |
fred_george_new_96 | If you collect wizard cards you'll need a Folio Magi to keep them in. |
Vincent Crabbe
This was probably meant for when Crabbe and Goyle let Harry know about the "present" Malfoy has for him.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
crabbe2 | You're going to get what you deserve. |
Albus Dumbledore
These lines were probably meant to be used during or after Dumbledore's chat with Harry at the beginning of the game. The first two are used in the PlayStation version if you talk to Dumbledore after his "Welcome to Hogwarts" speech in the Entrance Hall. The last one is used during the conversation as the last line said before gaining control of Harry. The narrator reads an alternate of this line in the Windows version.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
111DumbledoreInfo6 | Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Four wonderful words don't you think? | |
111DumbledoreInfo7 | Ah, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts - a wonderful place to explore. | |
BlankDumbledore2 | Oh, which reminds me, the third floor corridor is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to suffer a most painful death. |
While this was used in the PlayStation version, the Windows version has the narrator read the note that comes with the invisibility cloak. Though this voice sounds different from the one Dumbledore has in the final game, an early sound archive contains several early recordings for Dumbledore that use this same voice.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
141InvisibilityNote1 | Your father left this Invisibility Cloak in my possession before he died. It is time it was returned to you. Use it well. |
The rest of these lines could have been used at any point in the game (except for the last one, which was probably meant for the ending). In the PlayStation version, there are house point tallies every few levels, which use these comments.

Professor Quirrell
There are a bunch of recordings of Quirrell supposedly reacting to taking damage, although Harry never has a battle with him directly. Some of these sound really painful. Also, of the sixteen files, three of them were actually recycled for the ending and are used by Snape.

These were most likely intended to be used shortly before the final boss fight with Voldemort. While 147QuirrelMisc2 is technically used during the fight with Voldemort as something he says when casting a spell, the game specifically coded that file to play at 60% of its normal pitch to hide the fact that it's actually a recording of Professor Quirrell.

For some reason, there are several recordings of Quirrell's lines from the Swedish dub of the game that somehow made it into the archive for the English dialogue. These lines were made inaudible in the Language menu of the UK English version, although the files can still be found in its dialog archive. While the original English recordings of these clips do not seem to be present in any version of the game, the English subtitles accurately reflect the Swedish clips. While these lines were still dubbed into other languages, they are not used in any version of the game.

Whereas the other Swedish files were carried over into the actual Swedish version (and remained unused), an odd file called Quirrell_barrel remains exclusive to the original English-language archive. It does not have a subtitle associated with it, making it absent from the Language menu. It seems to be an earlier take of the Danish voiceline of the actual used line Quirrel_barrel.

Snape might have been meant to say this after scolding Harry for being late for class. Oddly, the filename was mislabeled as a Flitwick line. This was used in the PlayStation version.

flitwick_chall_2 | If you move the block onto the plate, the door will open and you can proceed. | |
flitwick_chall_6 | Use the direction keys or the mouse to move it onto that plate. |
The first clip below is an alternative version of the line Flitwick normally says at the start of the Wingardium Leviosa challenge. The second one implies that challenges were originally going to have a time limit, which was carried over to the sequel but were removed again in the third game.

This is an alternate line likely intended for the level leading up to the Remembrall Chase level.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
HAG_063 | Well be off then, yeh shouldn't be late fer yer Broomstick lesson. |
A few lines likely intended for the beginning of the fire seed caves level. Hagrid never explains where the dragon egg came from in this version, although it's an important plot point in the book and film. He does in the PlayStation version, though.

Lee Jordan
Apparently, Harry was supposed to obtain some Quidditch armor, but that does not happen in this game. It happens in PS1 version and the sequel however.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
127LeeJordan13 | And it looks like Potter has some new Quidditch armor - that will help against those Bludgers! |
There is also some dialogue suggesting that Harry was supposed to play Slytherin later as opposed to first, and that Hufflepuff would have been played against in the main game. This is further discussed by some unused lines from the narrator.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
127LeeJordan5 | Harry Potter is once again Gryffindor's team Seeker. In the last match against Hufflepuff, he caught the Snitch to win the game! | |
127LeeJordan6 | For this match against Slytherin, Gryffindor once again relies on our excellent Seeker, Harry Potter! |
The rings being emitted by the Snitch don't seem to actually make Harry go faster, which may be why this was left unused.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
127LeeJordan7 | Remember when the Snitch appears, it releases Speed Rings that will help the Seeker fly faster. |
These are a few extra lines also possibly intended for the Quidditch introductory speech.

127LeeJordan11 | The Snitch is away! | |
127LeeJordan12 | Looks like those Seekers have to return to their spotting positions. | |
127LeeJordan16 | The Quaffle is released! |
This file would have been used to explain the Quidditch League rules, but instead the game simply displays the subtitle text on the screen.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
quid_instructions | Welcome to the Hogwarts Exhibition Quidditch league! Here are the rules. You must play each of the Hogwarts house teams twice. In each match the team to catch the Snitch wins. After completing your six matches, the two teams with the most wins will play one another in the Final. The winner of the Final will be crowned Quidditch Champion! Good luck, Harry! And may the best team win. |
While the majority of Lee Jordan's commentary for Quidditch matches does get used, there are still a handful of lines that are not referenced in the script that determines what dialogue he uses.

The sound archive Quidditch_Lee_Jordan.uax contains copies of all of Lee Jordan's dialogue, but with an added echo effect that the used dialogue does not have. It also contains numerous unused alternate takes of used dialogue along with some lines that are completely unique and do not have a variant without the echo effect. While this entire archive is unused, the files containing echoed versions of used dialogue and the aforementioned unused dialogue have been omitted here.

Even He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has some words left unspoken in the game. Also, whoever named some of his files added an extra "r" to his name by mistake.

Narrator
These are different takes of some narration from the game's opening. The narrator's voice in StoryBook8 sounds a bit different from the other files in the game as it is actually a leftover from an earlier archive where all his dialogue had a different inflection.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
StoryBook6 | Hagrid took Harry to Diagon Alley, to purchase a most unusual list of school supplies. | |
StoryBook8 | 'Not Slytherin, eh?' said the Hat in his ear. 'You could be great, it's all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness. No? Well, if you're sure, better be . . .' |
These are slightly different takes of the lines normally used between the Flipendo challenge and the flying lesson.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
storybook_new_2 | Back in their Gryffindor common room, Harry, Ron and Hermione talked about their exciting first days at Hogwarts. | |
storybook_new_2a | But there was little time for idle chatter, since Harry and his friends were expected shortly at their flying lesson with Madam Hooch. |
These were most likely meant to be used as a transition between Harry's flying lesson and his Charms lesson. Instead, the level skips right over to the next.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
storybook_new_3 | Following flying lessons, Harry returned to the common room and prepared for Charms with Professor Flitwick. | |
storybook_new_3a | It was still Harry's first week at Hogwarts and there was much to learn. |
The game never explains how Harry got his broomstick. Apparently, it was intended at one point.
Name | Clip | Subtitle |
---|---|---|
storybook_new_4 | Later that day, as owls flooded into the great hall, Harry received a long, thin package. | |
storybook_new_4a | It contained a note from McGonagall explaining her gift: a sleek and shiny Nimbus Two Thousand broomstick. | |
storybook_new_4b | Harry couldn't wait to try it out during the Quidditch match against Slytherin. |
Given where these two files were sorted, the first line was probably meant to be spoken after the first Quidditch match and the second after the second match.

storybook_new_6a | Unable to contain themselves, the victorious Gryffindors hoisted Harry onto their shoulders and carried him off the field. |
These were intended for the cutscene after the troll chase level, but the cutscene instead gives the impression that the main characters have no idea who could have unleashed the troll.

Harry was originally going to be sent to the Forbidden Forest after getting to the tower, but that is not the case in this version of the game. There remains some story narration for this scene. Interestingly, the last four lines from this scene each have two slightly different takes.

storybook_new_9 (Philosopher's Stone) |
Hermione, Ron and Harry researched the secret of the Philosopher's Stone: it could produce the Elixir of Life, a potion that would make anyone immortal. | |
storybook_new_9 (Sorcerer's Stone) |
Hermione, Ron and Harry researched the secret of the Sorcerer's Stone: it could produce the Elixir of Life, a potion that would make anyone immortal. | |
storybook_new_9a | 'No wonder Snape's after it! Anyone would want it.' said Harry. |
These lines were meant to be used for the ending. Apparently, Harry was supposed to play a game of Quidditch against Slytherin after fighting Voldemort. This implies that Slytherin was going to be saved for last instead of being played first. This is also supported by some unused lines from Lee Jordan. This does occur in the PlayStation version, where the last two lines are used.

StoryBook42 | Harry awoke in the hospital wing, Madam Pomfrey at his bedside. 'You were very lucky, Potter,' she said gravely. 'But I'm afraid you're going to be here for quite a while.' | |
StoryBook47 | Ron went on to remind Harry of the Quidditch match that day. 'Anyway,' he said, 'you haven't got time to sit around in here - we've got Slytherin to beat!' | |
StoryBook48 | Harry, still stunned by Ron's gift, nodded slowly. He'd just defeated You-Know-Who and now he was going to have to help defeat Slytherin. |
