Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Windows, Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X)/Unused Dialogue

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Windows, Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X).

Hmmm...
To do:
The page is suuuuuuper big! Maybe it makes sense to split it into subpages? The pages could be grouped by characters similarly to how it was done on this page. At least 5 subpages would improve the page tremendously.

Within the Language menu, it is possible to find many pieces of recorded dialogue that are left unused in the game, along with their respective subtitles or text. There are also some files not mentioned in the menu which can only be heard by extracting them from the game's archives. It should be noted that some subtitles have missing punctuation marks. The majority of the following clips were also recorded in every language the game was dubbed in (Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish). Some of these audio clips were used in the PlayStation version of the game. The files were not really arranged in a convenient fashion, so they will be sorted by speaker here.

Harry Potter

With well over 100 unique recordings not used anywhere, Harry Potter himself has more unused dialogue than any other character in the game. Most of them are general lines that could have been used where applicable in various levels, but ended up being unused likely to prevent Harry from being too annoying or because many of his hints were deemed unnecessary.

The following lines were likely meant for one of Harry's encounters with Malfoy, whether it be the duel with the Wizard Crackers or the Remembrall Chase level.

These are lines that would have been used in the Fireseed Caves level. While Harry does use a couple of these lines in-game, the variant he uses is all one recording while these are separate, different takes.

Hedwig delivers two letters from Hermione to Harry over the course of the game, but he says nothing upon opening them. He also never gets a letter from Hagrid or Dumbledore.

While Harry uses numerous interjections throughout the game, there are still a handful that ultimately went unused. A good chunk of additional recordings exist in the HAR_emotes.uax archive, separate from the rest of the game's dialogue, hence why they have no subtitle or text associated with them.

The lines below would have been used during the sneak levels where Harry whispers his spells, but he never has to use Incendio in these levels. However, at the start of the second sneak level, it is for some reason possible to cast Incendio on Mrs. Norris behind the first locked door. One can reach this iteration of Mrs. Norris using cheats or by standing on the railing of the bridge, breaking a vase with Flipendo to make Filch go back, then using Alohamora on the door ahead and casting Incendio on Mrs. Norris until Filch arrives. The first three files are not included in the Language menu, instead being stored in the archive containing Harry's spell incantations.

The following are mainly recordings of Harry reading the names of most of the people featured on the wizard cards. Harry never reads the cards aloud in this game, although he does in the PlayStation version. In most dubs of this game, these lines are read by the narrator instead, as an early sound archive indicates that these originally would have been read by the narrator. The Russian dub still has these read by their voice actor for Harry.

These two clips are rather mean-spirited, but they were used in the PlayStation version, where they are spoken after finishing the Broomstick Practice lesson.

Hi, Harry, have you met Hermione yet? She's a real know-it-all, and a teacher's pet.
111RonandHerm4
She's rather annoying, isn't she?

Ron was probably supposed to say this near the beginning of the game. In the PlayStation version, Ron says this after the first Quidditch match, leading up to a level devoted to finding a Sloth brain for Potions class.

Name Clip Subtitle

Do you collect Famous Witches and Wizards cards? The rumor is, a full set wins a special prize!

Ron never laughs in the game nor does he emote very often. However, some of his laughs and moans were sneakily used for other characters. For instance, one of his laughs is used by his brothers Fred and George during the game's ending.

These lines would have been used during the fight with the troll. Oddly, while the game makes it look as though Ron is asking Hermione if she's alright, it's actually a voice clip of Harry, leaving the actual recording by Ron's voice actor unused.

Vincent Crabbe

This was probably meant for when Crabbe and Goyle let Harry know about the "present" Malfoy has for him.

Name Clip Subtitle

You're going to get what you deserve.

Albus Dumbledore

These lines were probably meant to be used during or after Dumbledore's chat with Harry at the beginning of the game. The first two are used in the PlayStation version if you talk to Dumbledore after his "Welcome to Hogwarts" speech in the Entrance Hall. The last one is used during the conversation as the last line said before gaining control of Harry. The narrator reads an alternate of this line in the Windows version.

Name Clip Subtitle

Oh, which reminds me, the third floor corridor is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to suffer a most painful death.

While this was used in the PlayStation version, the Windows version has the narrator read the note that comes with the invisibility cloak. Though this voice sounds different from the one Dumbledore has in the final game, an early sound archive contains several early recordings for Dumbledore that use this same voice.

These were most likely intended to be used shortly before the final boss fight with Voldemort. While 147QuirrelMisc2 is technically used during the fight with Voldemort as something he says when casting a spell, the game specifically coded that file to play at 60% of its normal pitch to hide the fact that it's actually a recording of Professor Quirrell.

For some reason, there are several recordings of Quirrell's lines from the Swedish dub of the game that somehow made it into the archive for the English dialogue. These lines were made inaudible in the Language menu of the UK English version, although the files can still be found in its dialog archive. While the original English recordings of these clips do not seem to be present in any version of the game, the English subtitles accurately reflect the Swedish clips. While these lines were still dubbed into other languages, they are not used in any version of the game.

Whereas the other Swedish files were carried over into the actual Swedish version (and remained unused), an odd file called Quirrell_barrel remains exclusive to the original English-language archive. It does not have a subtitle associated with it, making it absent from the Language menu. It seems to be an earlier take of the Danish voiceline of the actual used line Quirrel_barrel.

Apparently, Harry was supposed to obtain some Quidditch armor, but that does not happen in this game. It happens in PS1 version and the sequel however.

Name Clip Subtitle
127LeeJordan13
And it looks like Potter has some new Quidditch armor - that will help against those Bludgers!

There is also some dialogue suggesting that Harry was supposed to play Slytherin later as opposed to first, and that Hufflepuff would have been played against in the main game. This is further discussed by some unused lines from the narrator.

Name Clip Subtitle

Harry Potter is once again Gryffindor's team Seeker. In the last match against Hufflepuff, he caught the Snitch to win the game!
127LeeJordan6
For this match against Slytherin, Gryffindor once again relies on our excellent Seeker, Harry Potter!

The rings being emitted by the Snitch don't seem to actually make Harry go faster, which may be why this was left unused.

127LeeJordan12

Name Clip Subtitle

Narrator

These are different takes of some narration from the game's opening. The narrator's voice in StoryBook8 sounds a bit different from the other files in the game as it is actually a leftover from an earlier archive where all his dialogue had a different inflection.

Name Clip Subtitle
StoryBook6
Hagrid took Harry to Diagon Alley, to purchase a most unusual list of school supplies.
StoryBook8
'Not Slytherin, eh?' said the Hat in his ear. 'You could be great, it's all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness. No? Well, if you're sure, better be . . .'

These are slightly different takes of the lines normally used between the Flipendo challenge and the flying lesson.

Name Clip Subtitle

Back in their Gryffindor common room, Harry, Ron and Hermione talked about their exciting first days at Hogwarts.
storybook_new_2a
But there was little time for idle chatter, since Harry and his friends were expected shortly at their flying lesson with Madam Hooch.

These were most likely meant to be used as a transition between Harry's flying lesson and his Charms lesson. Instead, the level skips right over to the next.

Name Clip Subtitle
storybook_new_3
Following flying lessons, Harry returned to the common room and prepared for Charms with Professor Flitwick.
storybook_new_3a
It was still Harry's first week at Hogwarts and there was much to learn.

The game never explains how Harry got his broomstick. Apparently, it was intended at one point.

Name Clip Subtitle

Later that day, as owls flooded into the great hall, Harry received a long, thin package.
storybook_new_4a
It contained a note from McGonagall explaining her gift: a sleek and shiny Nimbus Two Thousand broomstick.
storybook_new_4b
Harry couldn't wait to try it out during the Quidditch match against Slytherin.

Given where these two files were sorted, the first line was probably meant to be spoken after the first Quidditch match and the second after the second match.

Name Clip Subtitle
storybook_new_5a
The Gryffindors spilled onto the field and joyfully lifted Harry onto their shoulders. Harry couldn't remember ever feeling happier.
storybook_new_6a
Unable to contain themselves, the victorious Gryffindors hoisted Harry onto their shoulders and carried him off the field.

These were intended for the cutscene after the troll chase level, but the cutscene instead gives the impression that the main characters have no idea who could have unleashed the troll.

Name Clip Subtitle
storybook_new_7
Exhausted from their encounter with the troll, Harry, Ron and Hermione returned to the Gryffindor common room and discussed the strange goings-on at Hogwarts.
storybook_new_7a
They suspected Snape had something to do with the mountain troll.
storybook_new_8
But between lessons and Quidditch practice, there wasn't much time left to dwell on Professor Snape.
storybook_new_8a
Harry was too busy preparing for the second Quidditch match against Ravenclaw.

Harry was originally going to be sent to the Forbidden Forest after getting to the tower, but that is not the case in this version of the game. There remains some story narration for this scene. Interestingly, the last four lines from this scene each have two slightly different takes.

That night, Harry carried Norbert up to the tallest tower.
StoryBook21
Once Norbert had been freed however, Malfoy sprang his trap. Harry was caught by Professor McGonagall.

storybook_new_9a
'No wonder Snape's after it! Anyone would want it.' said Harry.

These lines were meant to be used for the ending. Apparently, Harry was supposed to play a game of Quidditch against Slytherin after fighting Voldemort. This implies that Slytherin was going to be saved for last instead of being played first. This is also supported by some unused lines from Lee Jordan. This does occur in the PlayStation version, where the last two lines are used.

Harry awoke in the hospital wing, Madam Pomfrey at his bedside. 'You were very lucky, Potter,' she said gravely. 'But I'm afraid you're going to be here for quite a while.'
StoryBook47
Ron went on to remind Harry of the Quidditch match that day. 'Anyway,' he said, 'you haven't got time to sit around in here - we've got Slytherin to beat!'
StoryBook48
Harry, still stunned by Ron's gift, nodded slowly. He'd just defeated You-Know-Who and now he was going to have to help defeat Slytherin.

Prefects

A few lines meant for either of the prefects were left unused. Perhaps the developers felt they already had enough dialogue of them scolding Harry.

Blank Files

There are some files in the dialogue archive that contain nothing but one second of silence. The subtitles for these files can still be found in hpdialog.int, making it clearer what these files were intended for.

127Outro1=CONGRATULATIONS! You have unlocked the QUIDDITCH CUP!

Possibly meant to be said by Lee Jordan. The subtitle itself doesn't even show up anywhere in the game. While the text was still translated into other languages, the file is still blank in every version of the game.

Entire descriptions for ten wizard cards, possibly meant to be read by Harry judging by some files that still exist in the game. This text includes the same unused descriptions for Merwyn the Malicious, Archibald Alderton, and Grogan Stump that also appear in the file containing the text for all the cards. Though these files are blank in English-language versions of the game as well as the official Russian dub, they remain intact in the other dubbed versions and are read by the narrator.
