Lufia & The Fortress of Doom, the first entry in the series, is a Dragon Quest clone with very little to make it stand out other than its large (perhaps too large) sprawling dungeons and huge array of usable items. The game is also known for its laughably bad English translation.

Miscellaneous tidbits that are interesting enough to point out here.
Notes

Unused Warp Point

Data exists for a warp point for a location called "Macao", which just places you in the mountains near Linze. In the Japanese version, however, it warps you out somewhere in the ocean (not sure if this is due to something in RAM or plot advancing or what yet).

There are several other unused warps: a blank one before Alekia, and two Elfrea spots, one of which also teleports you to the Macao location.

Unused Items

Hmmm...
To do:
Find out what values EB-EE and 80 do and if they're unused.

Pro Action Replay (PAR) codes 7E1507?? 7E150801 (JP) or 7E14F7?? 7E14F801 (US) will replace the first item in your item list with one of the below.

Unused Items
Value Name JP Name Description
(JP version)
Effect
73 Fire Ring ??? If this is used it's probably dropped by an enemy? Needs research.
74 Ice Ring ??? If this is used it's probably dropped by an enemy? Needs research.
75 Electro Ring エレ+キ
リング
If this is used it's probably dropped by an enemy? Needs research.
EF Free Door フリードア (none) No effect. Gives the "You can't use it here." message, no matter what. Same deal in the JP version, so whatever functionality it had was removed.
FE NOT USE つかうな! (none)
FF NOT USE つかうな! (none)

Interestingly, the Silver Tarot and Royal Statue are listed alongside the Ancient Cave items. You get these two items, which have no other use, in the basement of Herat castle alongside the final piece of Alumina.

Unused Spells

Hmmm...
To do:
I think there's a boss that might use the AGI down spell.

Insert bad "eregion" joke here.

Seven unused spells exist. Pro Action Replay (PAR) code 7E15C0?? (JP) or 7E15B0?? (US) will change Lufia's second spell slot.

Unused Spells
Value Name MP Cost Description
(English Ver.)
Effect
31 Defake
[デフェイク]
0 Lowers enemy DFP.
Affects one group.
Lowers enemy AGI instead. Affects one monster group. A spell is used by the "Spellsnail" enemy called "Spew" ("Neneki wo Haita" [ねねきをはいた] in the JP version) that has a similar effect.
Spell seems bugged: if you cast it on a monster with very low AGI (such as the monsters around Alekia), they will proceed to get nearly infinite turns due to incomplete handling of what is assumedly attribute wraparound.
32 Figual
[フイガル]
0 Confuses monsters.
Affects one group.
Confuses one monster group.
Seems to be similar (if not identical) to the used Confuse. The Japanese naming scheme identifies this as an upgrade to Confuse.
Interestingly, the final boss, Guard Daos, uses this spell.
33 Paraiz 0 Destroys weak monsters.
Affects one group.
Paralyzes one monster group. Possibly seen as redundant, as a target-all-enemies sleep spell is learned by the protagonist and Lufia.
34 Eregion 0 Huge bolt of lightning.
Hits one enemy.
Hit-all-enemies version of Thunder.
35 Elegi
[エレ+ギ]
1 Bolt of lightning.
Hits one enemy.
Hit-all-enemies version of Flash.
36 Elegio
[エレ+ギオ]
1 Big bolt of lightning.
Hits one enemy.
Hit-all-enemies version of Bolt.
37 Absobl
[アブソブル]
0 Absorbs monster MP.
Affects one member.
Seems to be a duplicate of the used Absorb. Seems to work the same.

In the US, the priest and his church lost their religious symbols.

Bunny Girls

Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

In Forfeit, you encounter two girls who won't let you leave the shop unless you buy something. Much like in the sequel, they were originally in bunny girl costumes.

Item Descriptions

In both versions, you can press X over spells and get a description of what they do. However, in the Japanese version you can also do this with all items and Scenario items.

Either localization cut a huge corner by removing these descriptions from the game, or they simply ran out of space. Either way, these were excised from the game's Western release.
