Day of the Tentacle/Unused Music

This is a sub-page of Day of the Tentacle.

Partially Unused Music

Several of the songs played in the game during cutscenes are extended beyond what you'd ever be able to hear in normal play. This is because older computers all ran at different speeds, and sometimes music might have to loop for a bit longer while some larger assets required for the next part of the cutscene loaded in. The songs that loop indefinitely have all been cut to only loop a few times.

Also, each song comes in three different flavours for the different MIDI hardwares of the time: AdLib, Roland MT-32 and General Midi. There's no clear consensus on which is the superior/original version, so pick your favourite and listen away. These have all been recorded using ScummVM's AdLib emulator, MT-32 emulator and Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth [Windows MIDI] audio device, where appropriate.

Some of the songs are "extended", but only in that they loop the last few notes over and over, or just hold the last note. These songs have been omitted, as it's not really unused content.

Introduction

The song played as the LucasArts logo appears in the time vortex is quite a lot longer than it needs to be. It fades off pretty pathetically, much like your machine if you ever actually heard this in its intended context, I suppose.

The song played during the introduction cutscene is way longer that it needs to be. It's a full version of the famous song "Ranz des Vaches", but only about the first 22 seconds play in-game. It even has a proper ending!

Debut of the Chron-O-John

The song played as E=mc² flies through the time vortex is forcefully faded off as soon as it starts to play by the music scripting system, so even the slowest of machines would never have heard this one in full.

Much like the previous song, the one played as Old Purple Tentacle flies through the time vortex is faded off as soon as it starts to play, making hearing it in full somewhat of an impossiblity.

The Time Machine Breaks Down

The song played as Bernard falls through time is significantly longer than it needs to be.

The song played as Laverne falls through time is also significantly longer than it needs to be.

The song played as Hoagie surfs through time is also significantly longer than it needs to be.

Bernard Smokes the Cigar

The song played as Bernard smokes the cigar (spoiler: it explodes in his face) builds dramatic tension for way longer than it actually does in-game. This song is stressful.

Travelling Back to Yesterday

The song played when all three kids have powered up their various devices and Dr. Fred throws the switch hangs for a bit instead of getting interrupted by the next one.

The song played immediately afterwards, which hangs just before Laverne appears. It's not very interesting.

Yesterday

The song played when Old Purple Tentacle's shot from the shrink ray backfires has a nice delicate ending that never plays in-game before it's interrupted by the next song.

The song played immediately afterwards as Old Purple Tentacle gets squished loops forever after a certain point, where it would normally get interrupted by the next song.

Epilogue

The song played during the epilogue loops forever after a certain point, where it would normally get interrupted by the next song.

The song played while Laverne separates from Hoagie is quickly interrupted by the next song, so it never ends like it does in the full version here.

The song played at the very end of the epilogue after all the kids have separated from each other goes on for quite a while longer than it needs to. It's pretty annoying.

Unused Music

The game also includes a small number of pieces of music that are unused entirely.

Time Change Cue

A MIDI version of the sound played when things in the past are changed to make things in the future disappear, which goes unused in favour of a regular ol' sound file.

Epilogue Cue

A short track stored amongst the epilogue music. Perhaps it was intended for when Bernard separates from Hoagie and Laverne, but it doesn't seem to actually play in-game at all.

Main Hall (Past)

This misplaced track seems to be one of the layers from the music used in past interiors, which usually plays when standing near George Washington in the main hall, but separated out into its own track. Unlike every other piece of music in the game, it only exists in Roland MT-32 form.
