This is a sub-page of Minecraft: Java Edition/Version Differences.

1.16 is the Nether Update, a major update to Java Edition released on June 23, 2020. Its main goal is to overhaul the Nether. It was announced at MINECON Live 2019.

20w06a is the first snapshot for 1.16, released on February 5, 2020.

Additions

Blocks

Ancient Debris

  • Ancient debris is a new block that can be found throughout the Nether at any altitude, though it is much more common at lower levels.
  • It can be refined into a netherite scrap by smelting in a furnace or blast furnace.
  • It has the same blast resistance as obsidian.
  • A diamond pickaxe or better is required to mine it.

Basalt

  • Basalt is a new block that up basalt pillars in the Nether.
  • It generates in soul sand valleys.
  • It can be placed directionally, similarly to logs.

Block of Netherite

  • Blocks of netherite are a new block that be crafted with 9 netherite ingots, similar to other mineral blocks.
  • They have the same blast resistance as obsidian, but unlike obsidian, they can be moved with pistons.
  • They currently cannot be used as a beacon building block.

Crimson and Warped Buttons

Crimson and warped buttons are new types of buttons that can be crafted from their respective planks.

Crimson and Warped Fence Gates

Crimson and warped fence gates are new types of fence gates that can be crafted from crimson and warped planks, respectively.

Crimson and Warped Fences

Crimson and warped fences are new types of fences that can be crafted from crimson and warped planks, respectively.

Crimson and Warped Fungi

  • Crimson and warped fungi are new blocks that generate in crimson and warped forests, respectively.
  • They can be placed on dirt, coarse dirt, farmland, podzol, nylium, soul soil, and grass blocks.
  • They can be fertilized to be grown into the respective huge fungi when placed on nylium.
  • Unlike mushrooms, fungi cannot spread.

Crimson and Warped Doors

  • Crimson and warped doors are new doors that are crafted from crimson and warped planks.
  • They are a bit bugged, however:
    • They drop a door for each half of the block, unlike regular doors.
    • This will be fixed in the next snapshot.

Crimson and Warped Nylium

  • Crimson and warped nylium are new blocks that resemble grass blocks.
  • They can be spread to netherrack by using bone meal on a netherrack block next to a nylium block.

Crimson and Warped Planks

  • Crimson and warped planks are a new type of wood plank that do not burn.
  • They are crafted from their respective stems.
  • They can be used to craft their respective slabs, stairs, fences, fence gates, pressure plates, buttons, doors, and trapdoors.

Crimson and Warped Pressure Plates

Crimson and warped pressure plates are new types of pressure plates that can be crafted using their respective planks.

Crimson and Warped Signs

  • These signs work like normal wooden signs.
  • However, they currently cannot be crafted.

Crimson Roots, Warped Roots, and Nether Sprouts

Crimson roots, warped roots, and nether sprouts are decorative foliage that generates in both crimson and warped forest biomes, as well as soul sand valleys. However, they can be harvested without shears, unlike their Overworld counterparts.

Crimson and Warped Slabs

Crimson and warped slabs are new types of slabs that can be crafted from crimson and warped planks, like other wooden slabs.

Crimson and Warped Stairs

Crimson and warped stairs are new types of stairs that can be crafted from crimson and warped planks, respectively.

Crimson and Warped Stems

  • Crimson and warped stems are new blocks that comprise the trunks of huge fungi.
  • They have animated textures.
  • They have a top texture similar to regular log blocks.
  • They can be placed directionally, similarly to logs.
  • They do not burn.
  • They have respective stripped variants.

Crimson and Warped Trapdoors

Crimson and warped trapdoors are new types of trapdoors that can be crafted from their respective planks.

Shroomlight

  • Shroomlights are a new block that emit a light level of 15, similarly to glowstone.
  • They can be mined with any tool, but axes are the most efficient.
  • They generate as a part of huge fungi.

Soul Fire

  • Soul fire is a new blue variant of fire.
  • Fire lit on soul soil is blue, regardless of what dimension the player is in.
  • It burns forever (unless it is put out), similar to regular fire on netherrack.
  • It generates naturally in the soul sand valley biome in the Nether.
  • It deals damage at a rate of one heart per second as opposed to the half-heart per second of regular fire.

Soul Fire Lantern

  • Soul fire lanterns are a new block that give off a light level of 10.
  • They are crafted similarly to a normal lantern, using a soul fire torch instead of a normal torch.

Soul Soil

  • Soul soil is a new block that generates in the soul sand valley, alongside conventional soul sand.
  • Fire lit on soul soil is soul fire.
  • The player does not sink and is not slowed when walking in soul soil.

Soul Fire Torch

  • Soul fire torches are a new torch variant that give off a light level of 10.
  • They are crafted similarly to a normal torch, with soul soil being placed under the stick.

Warped Wart Block

  • Warped wart blocks are a new blue variation of the nether wart block.
  • They generate as a part of huge warped fungi. They sometimes generate in the ground, replacing the warped nylium in warped forest biome.

Weeping Vines

  • Weeping vines are a new type of vine that generate in the crimson forest.
  • They are placed on the bottom of a block and grow downward.

Items

Netherite Armor

  • Netherite armor is a new type of armor that can be crafted with a piece of diamond armor and a netherite ingot.
  • Unlike normal armor, it doesn't burn, and floats in lava.
  • It grants one additional point of knockback resistance per item.
  • It is tougher than diamond armor.
  • It has higher durability and enchantability than diamond.

Netherite Tools

  • Netherite tools are new tools that are crafted with a diamond tool and a netherite ingot.
  • Unlike other tools, it doesn't burn, and floats in lava.
  • It has higher durability, mining level, breaking multiplier, and enchantability than diamond.
  • All items (except the hoe) deal 1 more damage than their diamond counterparts.

Netherite Ingot

  • Netherite ingots are a new type of ingot created with 4 gold ingots and 4 netherite scraps.
  • It can be used to upgrade diamond tools and armor.

Netherite Scrap

  • Netherite scrap is a new item created by smelting ancient debris in a furnace.
  • It is used to create netherite ingots.

Spawn Eggs

The hoglin spawn egg has been added.

Mobs

Hoglins

  • Hoglins are a new mob that spawn in crimson forests.
  • They drop rotten flesh.
  • Their code is currently bugged at the moment:
    • Their legs clip into their body when hit, unlike other mobs.
    • They are not hostile in survival mode.
    • Their hitbox is incredibly small.

World Generation

Biomes

  • Soul Sand Valley
    • Soul sand valleys are vast grottoes composed of uncovered nether fossils, large basalt pillars, soul sand, soul soil, gravel and netherrack.
    • It's surrounded by blue ambient fog and scattered with blue soul fire.
    • Skeletons, ghasts, and endermen may spawn here.
  • Crimson Forest
    • Crimson forests are dense forests with huge crimson fungi.
    • Various plants and fungi are found in patches on the ground and weeping vines are found under the huge fungi and ceilings.
    • Zombie pigmen and hoglins may spawn here.
  • Warped Forest
    • Warped forests are a color variation of the crimson forest, but with somewhat different vegetation, particles, and fog effects.
    • Only endermen may spawn here.

Structures

  • Basalt Pillar
    • Basalt pillars are floor-to-ceiling pillars of basalt that generate in soul sand valleys.
  • Huge Crimson and Huge Warped Fungi
    • Huge crimson and huge warped fungi are new structures resembling trees found in crimson and warped forests, respectively.
    • They are made of crimson and warped stem blocks as well as red nether wart blocks and warped wart blocks.
    • They usually grow shroomlight in them.
    • They can be grown from their respective fungi.
  • Nether Fossils
    • Nether fossils are new fossil structures have been added for the soul sand valley.
    • These fossils are different from the overworld fossils and do not generate with coal ore.

General

Tags

  • The block tags crimson_stems, fire, nylium, warped_stems, and wart_blocks have been added.
  • The item tags crimson_stems and warped_stems have been added.

Particles

The particles ash, crimson_spore, soul_fire_flame, warped_spore have been added.

Bamboo

Bamboo has been renamed to "Bamboo Shoot".

Bone Blocks

Bone blocks now generate as part of nether fossils in soul sand valleys.

Fire

Fire can no longer burn out items.

Flower Pots

Flower pots now have a bottom texture when empty.

Gravel and Soul Sand

Gravel and soul sand now generate in soul sand valley biomes.

Netherrack

  • Netherrack will now convert into nylium when bone meal is used on it, when it is adjacent to nylium.
  • If two nylium blocks of different types are present, it will choose the type at random based on how many blocks of each type are around it.

Nether Wart Blocks

  • Nether wart blocks now generate as a part of huge crimson fungi.
  • It also sometimes generates in the ground, replacing the crimson nylium in crimson forest biome.
  • The texture has also been changed.

Pistons and Sticky Pistons

  • The hardness of pistons and sticky pistons has been increased to 1.5.
  • Pickaxes are now more efficient on pistons.

Redstone Dust

Smooth quartz has now been renamed to "Smooth Quartz Block".

Walls

  • Walls do not have gaps anymore when stacked vertically.
  • Blockdata now uses "none", "low", and "tall" for east/west/north/south directional values.

Items

Clay

Clay has been renamed to "Clay Ball".

Mobs

Endermen

Endermen now spawn in soul sand valleys and warped forests.

Ghasts

  • Ghast sounds are now heard at a shorter range.
  • They also now spawn in soul sand valleys.

Skeletons

Skeletons now spawn in soul sand valleys.

Zombie Pigmen

Zombie pigmen now spawn in crimson forests.

World Generation

Biomes

The original nether biome has been renamed to nether wastes.

Structures

Shipwrecks and ocean ruins are now less common.

Nether Ceiling

Alongside mushrooms, huge crimson and warped fungi can generate over y=128 in the Nether.

Command Format

General

The message shown when running an unknown/incomplete command has changed.

Gameplay

Knockback Resistance

The knockback resistance is now a scale of the amount of knockback taken instead of a probability to take no knockback.

Patrols

Patrols no longer spawn when the player is close to any village.

Recipe Book

The cartography table recipe now unlocks with paper instead of string.

General

Debug Menu

  • When outside the world's vertical area, the debug menu no longer lists 'minecraft:the_void' as the biome.
  • Instead, it simply hides the biome information.

Materials

  • New nether wood material has been added.
    • It uses the wood material color.
    • It also uses default properties.

Rendering

Entity shadows to the ground have been improved.

Sounds

  • MC-2591 - Walking over the corner of lava deals damage.
  • MC-10727 - Player and entity shadows experience z-fighting with redstone.
  • MC-17431 - Shift-clicking stacked items with a data tag into the enchanting table GUI removes data tags from the moved item.
  • MC-45619 - Water, signs, vines, torches, etc. in the same block as item frame break item frame’s redstone signal.
  • MC-52178 - Cape doesn’t move down while sneaking / Cape detaches from body while sneaking.
  • MC-59363 - Items in item frames are deleted if both mouse buttons are used simultaneously.
  • MC-82235 - Baby pigs turn into adult zombie pigmen when struck by lightning.
  • MC-85527 - Shulkers opening into blocks.
  • MC-92889 - Mending doesn’t always consume experience if the player wears items with mending that are already fully repaired.

  • MC-109850 - Redstone wire doesn’t have a bottom texture.
  • MC-111133 - Piston pushing opened shulker makes said shulker glitch.

20w07a is the second snapshot for 1.16, released on February 14, 2020. It adds piglins and functionality to hoglins.

Mobs

Hoglins

Baby hoglins have been added.

Piglins

  • Piglins are a new aggressive mob.
  • They spawn with a random piece of armor (occasionally) and a golden sword/crossbow.
  • They spawn in crimson forests and nether wastes biomes.
  • Adults are hostile; babies are passive.
    • They will not attack players wearing golden armor.
    • Adult piglins turn aggressive when a player is mining blocks of gold or opening chests, even if they are wearing gold armor.
  • You can barter with them by right-clicking with golden ingots or drop them on the ground.
    • Upon receiving an item, they stare at it for a few seconds.
  • They attack adult hoglins sometimes.
    • Baby piglins prefer to play with baby hoglins.
  • They attack wither skeletons.
  • They avoid soul fire and zombie pigmen.
  • They prefer to hunt and fight in groups.
  • They will convert to a zombie pigmen when in overworld.
    • However, since the zombified piglin model hasn't been added yet... the change is pretty jarring.

Tags

  • The block tag beacon_base_blocks has been added.
    • It contains block of iron, block of gold, block of diamond, block of emerald, and block of netherite.
    • It controls what blocks can be used to build a beacon base.
  • The block tag wall_post_override has been added.
    • It contains lantern, soul fire lantern, torch, soul fire torch, redstone torch, and tripwire.
    • It controls what non-solid blocks can transform walls into their pillared block state.
  • The block tag wither_summon_base_blocks has been added.
    • It contains soul sand and soul soil.
    • It controls what blocks can be used to build a wither.
  • The item tag beacon_payment_items has been added.
    • Contains iron ingot, gold ingot, diamond, emerald and netherite ingot.

  • MC-75328 - /clear does not clear items in the inventory crafting grid.

  • MC-89043 - Slime blocks moved by pistons often fail to bounce up the player.
  • MC-93813 - Snow golems throwing snowballs play arrow shooting sound.

20w08a

20w08a is the third snapshot for 1.16, released on February 19, 2020. Disappointingly, it only fixes one bug involving villagers.

Bug Fixes

1 bug has been fixed.

  • MC-172078 - All villagers with saved memory disappear when upgrading to 20w07a.

20w09a

20w09a is the fourth snapshot for 1.16, released on February 26, 2020.

Blocks

Crying Obsidian

  • Crying obsidian is a block that was previously unused in the beta version of Minecraft.
  • It is only decorative for now, but according to a tweet by a developer, "it's decorative for now, but will have uses later".
  • It can only be obtained by bartering with piglins.
  • It has a light level of 10.
  • It emits purple particles.
  • It can be moved by pistons, unlike regular obsidian.
Beta 1.3 (unused) 20w09a

Targets

  • Targets are a new block that are redstone components.
  • They can be activated by shooting projectiles onto it.
  • The closer to the center the projectile hits on one of its faces, the stronger the redstone signal is.
  • It can be crafted using a hay block and 4 redstone dust pieces around it.

Gameplay

Advancements

  • A new advancement named "Bullseye" has been added.
  • To acquire this advancement, the player has to shoot a projectile into the center of one face of a target block.

Recipe Book

The recipes for crimson and warped signs have been added to the recipe book and are unlocked by having the respective planks.

Tags

  • A new climbable block tag has been added.
    • It includes ladders, vines, scaffolding, and weeping vines.
    • It's used in mob pathfinding.
  • A new impact_projectiles entity tag has been added.
  • It includes the arrows tag, snowballs, fireballs, small fireballs, eggs, tridents, dragon fireballs, and wither skulls.
  • It's used to determine what entities will break chorus fruit when hit.

General

Particles

Three particles have been added for crying obsidian: dripping_obsidian_tear, falling_obsidian_tear, and landing_obsidian_tear.

  • The nether fungi have been renamed to "Fungus".
  • They now can be added to flower pots.

Nether sprouts now have the replaceable plant material.

Purpur Pillars

The top texture of purpur pillars have been changed to match the texture used in Bedrock Edition.

  • Diamond axes, diamond boots, diamond helmets, diamond hoes, diamond leggings, diamond pickaxes, diamond shovels, diamond swords, golden hoes, golden pickaxes, wooden hoes, and wooden pickaxes have had their textures slightly changed to match the textures in Bedrock Edition.
  • The texture used for netherite pickaxes has also been changed, but this is unrelated to the other changes.

Hoes

Hoes can now break nether wart blocks and warped wart blocks quickly.

Mobs

Hoglins

The texture for hoglins has been slightly tweaked. Some colors were tweaked and transparent pixels were removed.

Piglins

  • Piglins now have an IsImmuneToZombification data value that prevents them from converting into zombified piglins in the Overworld.
  • Baby piglins now ride on the back of baby hoglins.
  • Skeleton horses and Zombie horses.
  • Piglins can now be leashed.

Zombie Pigmen

  • Zombie pigmen have been renamed to "Zombified Piglins".
  • The model and texture have been updated.
  • The texture used is the same texture added in 20w07a.

Non-Mob Entities

Minecarts

Minecarts now check dismount position height against entity height.

Bartering

  • Bartering loot has been restructured to be more appealing to survival players.
  • The new loot for bartering consists of:
    • Common barters (20⁄226 chance or about 8.85%)
      • 6-10 shroomlight
      • 1 fire charge
      • 8-16 gravel
      • 4-10 leather
      • 4-10 warped fungus
      • 4-16 nether brick
      • 1 obsidian

  • In this snapshot, all item amounts will be 1-5 due to a bug. Specifically, MC-173165.
  • Piglins will now inspect gold ingots first before throwing out the item they choose to barter for the player if they're still around.

Recipe Book

Stained glass pane recipes now only unlock when the player has the same color of stained glass in their inventory.

Sounds

  • block.portal.travel and block.portal.trigger sounds are now part of the "Ambient/Environment" sound category adjustable in the options menu.
  • The shearing sound category was changed from "Friendly Creatures" to "Players" for players using shears and "Blocks" for dispenser using shears.

Tags

Potted crimson fungus, warped fungus, crimson roots, and warped roots have been added to the flower_pots block tag.

Nether Fog

Color now transitions smoothly between biomes.

The Nether

  • The ambient lighting in the Nether has been changed.

Crying Obsidian

Fire

  • Fire now has a proper hitbox (1⁄16 blocks).
    • It cannot be put out by swords or tridents in Creative mode, akin to other blocks, and can be modified via the debug stick.

Nether Sprouts

The texture of nether sprouts has been changed.

Observers, redstone blocks, and targets now allow the placing of ladders and tripwire hooks.

Smithing Tables

Functionality for smithing tables has finally been added.

  • It is used to upgrade diamond items into Netherite versions.
  • It is now the only way to craft netherite gear, as upgrading in crafting table was removed.
  • Enchantments on the diamond item are now preserved when upgrading into Netherite.

Soul Fire

  • Like fire, soul fire now also has a proper hitbox (1⁄16 blocks).
    • It also cannot be put out by swords or tridents in Creative mode, akin to other blocks.

Target

  • Targets are now flammable.
  • They can now be activated by ender pearls and bottles o' enchanting.

Warped Fungus

Hoes

  • Hoes can now be enchanted with Efficiency, Fortune and Silk Touch.
  • They can also mine hay bales faster than other tools.
  • Each tier has a different speed at which hoes mine blocks they are effective against.

Netherite Armor, Tools, and Weapons

  • Netherite tools and armor can no longer be crafted using a crafting table.
  • The texture of all netherite armor, tools, and weapons has been changed.

Fish now despawn when they are further than 64 blocks away from the closest player.

  • This does not apply to fish placed by the player or nametagged fish.

Item Frames

  • Item frames now have two new data tags:
    • invisible makes the item frame invisible (item inside frame remains visible).
    • fixed prevents the item frame from being broken, and the item inside from being removed (it does not prevent item rotation).

Gameplay

Bartering

  • Bartering has been tweaked again.
    • Piglins can now offer soul sand and iron nuggets.
    • Piglins no longer offer shroomlights, warped nylium, nor warped fungi.
    • Netherite hoes are now less common.

Advancements

  • The target_hit trigger has been changed.
    • Conditions:
      • signalStrength has been renamed to signal_strength.
      • The new projectile data tag matches the projectile entity.
      • The new shooter data tag matches the player who shot or threw the projectile.

Block States

All "block states" files have had their format improved.

Entity UUIDs

UUIDs of the owners of projectiles, such as arrows or snowballs, are now stored as an array of four integers. All UUIDs will be stored in this format in the future.

  • Crimson hyphae and stripped crimson hyphae have been added to the crimson_stems block and item tags.
  • Warped hyphae and stripped warped hyphae have been added to the warped_stems block and item tags.
