This is a sub-page of Minecraft: Java Edition/Version Differences/1.4.

1.4.6 was the next release of the Pretty Scary Update. It included more than what was on the original poster; fireworks, enchanted books, and more! It was more or less the prettier portion of the update, or the more Christmas-and-New-Year's-themed portion.

12w49a

12w49a is the first release of version 1.4.6, released on December 7, 2012.

Additions

Blocks

Nether Brick Slabs

Nether brick slabs are a new kind of slab made out of Nether bricks. It is crafted similarly to the rest of the slabs, but the original material is replaced with Nether brick.

The addition of this block caused the stone slab to change its ID to 43:7.

Items

Enchanted Books

Enchanted books are a new item used for enchanting items using anvils. They can enchant any item, no matter what kind, even in Survival.

Firework Rocket

Firework rockets are a new kind of shootable projectible. They have no sound effects, but those will come soon. They're also customizable through crafting.

Firework Star

Firework stars are new items used for crafting firework rockets.

Blocks

General

When holding sneak, the player can place blocks and items (like redstone, repeaters, and levers) directly onto blocks such as crafting tables, furnaces, and dispensers.

Mobs

Ghasts

The blast radius of fireballs a ghast shoots can be customized with an editor.

Bug Fixes

16 bugs have been fixed.

  • MC-96 - [1-9] clicking an item out of a furnace does not give XP.
  • MC-256 - Mobs can still revert farmlands to dirt even if mobGriefing gamerule is set on false.
  • MC-498 - Setting an Enderman on fire with flint and steel, or lava, will not make it teleport away.
  • MC-721 - Animals on fire do not flee.
  • MC-1140 - Boats always get placed in the same direction and not based on how they get placed.
  • MC-1240 - Endermen cannot dodge flame arrow. When the arrow is shot the Enderman moves out of the way but is still set on fire.
  • MC-1311 - When you enter the Nether, the game auto-selects the first item on the toolbar.
  • MC-1847 - Leaves have the incorrect tool tip.
  • MC-2145 - "Drowning" in creative.
  • MC-2504 - Enchant command cannot enchant with ID 0 (Protection).
  • MC-3332 - You don't hear the xp sound you get every 5 levels.
  • MC-3490 - Minecarts and falling entities flickering / jittering (updated 1.4.5).
  • MC-3501 - Passive mob spawn eggs don't consume.
  • MC-3565 - Endermen don't open their mouth when attacked by other mobs.
  • MC-4069 - Pressing F3+B displays hitboxes.. rendering invisibility potions useless.
  • MC-4117 - Wither can sometimes destroy its own star due to the posthumous detonation of Wither skulls.

12w50a

12w50a is the second snapshot for version 1.4.6, released on December 13, 2012.

Chests

3 new textures have been added:

  • xmaschest.png
    • xmaschest.png changes the chest texture to resemble a red gift.
  • largexmaschest.png
    • largexmaschest.png changes the large chest texture to resemble a green gift.
  • skis.png
    • skis.png is an unused, dummy file. Dinnerbone said he added this file as a red herring (sadly?).

The chest will, from now on, use these textures for December 25, or Christmas Day.

Cobwebs

Cobwebs can now be harvested by using Silk Touch shears.

Items

Shears

Shears can now have the Silk Touch enchantment by using the anvil.

Tools

When switching between items in the hotbar, a tooltip at the top of the hotbar will appear with the name of the item. Renamed items will display the changed name as well. To disable it, open options.txt and change heldItemTooltips to false.

Mobs

Villagers

Enchanted books have been added through villager trading.

World Generation

Dungeons

Enchanted books can be found in dungeons with special enchantments normally not obtainable.

Gameplay

Enchanting

The Thorns enchantment has been added for armor. When hit by a mob, the mob will receive damage.

Changes

Items

General

Item entities are now rendered as 3D objects in the world when in Fancy graphics mode. This includes items placed in Item Frames.

Items also now show their enchantments when dropped on the ground.

Firework Rocket

The sounds and particles for the firework rocket have been added.

Gameplay

Creative

The firework rocket has been added to the Creative inventory.

Enchanting

The Protection enchantment is no longer as effective as all the other Protection enchantments combined. Also, the Unbreaking enchantment can now be applied to anything with durability using Enchanted Books.

General

Controls

Pressing CTRL+Q by default (Or your "Drop" button if changed in controls), the player drops a full stack instead of one item.

Notice

A notice/warning for users still playing on PowerPCs or Java 5 (Java 1.5) has been added:

Mojang plans to drop support for Java 5 by Minecraft 1.6. This is due to the most recent versions of LWJGL no longer supporting Java 5, with PowerPC also no longer supported by Apple to be made compatible with Java 6 or newer.

14 bugs have been fixed.

  • MC-255 - Graphical issue with trading.
  • MC-312 - Item textures of Spawn Eggs and Firework Stars not aligned properly when stacked.
  • MC-674 - Items different only in damage cannot be swapped.
  • MC-1626 - Z-Fighting in Beacon Block bottom.
  • MC-1959 - Placing double slabs ignore damage values.
  • MC-1969 - Minecarts can't travel through Nether portals.
  • MC-3593 - Lightning doesn't flash.
  • MC-4193 - Firework star duplication glitch.
  • MC-4199 - Deaths not logged to console.
  • MC-4200 - The Nether and The End generating random blocks clientside in multiplayer.
  • MC-4203 - Enchanted Books: Unenchantable item can receive any enchantment.
  • MC-4433 - Fallingsand spawners failing to save properly, and causing crashes.
  • MC-4499 - Beacon tiers don't work at y=0.
  • MC-4510 - Enchantment not showing in item frame.

12w50b

12w50b is the third and final snapshot for version 1.4.6, released on December 14, 2012; the day after the previous snapshot. It was released to fix some of the bugs and crashes in the 12w50a snapshot. It is also the final snapshot of 2012.

Enchanting

The damage dealt by the Thorns enchantment is now customizable, Fire Protection now extinguishes players quicker, and Blast Protection now reduces explosion recoil.

11 bugs have been fixed.

  • MC-133 - Mobs walking slow when the player hits them.
  • MC-4024 - Chest glitch - Server/Client desync.
  • MC-4191 - Firework Crafting / unusable ingredients in fireworks are used.
  • MC-4528 - Flaming Arrows Take a Bit to "Flame".
  • MC-4534 - Too Highlight shows when itemstack changes.
  • MC-4537 - NullPointerException when nothing in their hand.
  • MC-4553 - Zombies sometimes stop attacking.
  • MC-4580 - Unbreaking does not work on armor.
  • MC-4584 - Opening an GUI will show the item name in the hotbar again.
  • MC-4612 - Enchanted item bug in 3D.
  • MC-4634 - Can't remove xp bars from the "xp-1L" command when you're between level 0 and 1.

1.4.6

1.4.6 is an update to Minecraft that was completely released on December 20, 2012.

While it was not the last update to 1.4, it was the last one before the snapshots of 1.5 started.

  • MC-429 - When a bat flies through the water, it gets stuck, and it will stay stuck.
  • MC-678 - Water splash sound gets overridden by other sounds.
  • MC-756 - Player not shown in actual location after breaking boat.
  • MC-833 - Inventory items, when placed in an ender chest, disappears.
  • MC-971 - Mis-identified server version.
  • MC-1005 - Fresh install of 1.4.2 on fresh install of OS X 10.6.8 hangs.
  • MC-1347 - Items do not "update looks" when stacked on ground.
  • MC-1348 - Dropped items only auto-stack when moving, not when going through portals.
  • MC-1599 - File Handle leak in RegionFileCache (MCP).
  • MC-1734 - Duplicating Sand/Gravel/Dragon Egg still works with tweaks to an existing design.
  • MC-1883 - Destroying a Jukebox NPE&Kick.
  • MC-1957 - Minecraft graphics messed up.
  • MC-2442 - Redstone directional bug.
  • MC-2568 - Ghost block bug.
  • MC-2610 - Game freezes at the start of a previously saved game.
  • MC-2622 - Cannot modify the Render Distance setting - Stays at "Far" regardless of changes.
  • MC-2673 - Shift-Clicking smelted ores out of furnace causes a minor visual bug.
  • MC-2712 - The player cannot look around without moving vertically or horizontally.
  • MC-2747 - Minecraft client crashs [sic] when connection times out.
  • MC-2873 - Minecarts disappearing.
  • MC-2879 - Error 50% of the time when the player tries to join their server. Failed to login: Error
  • MC-2904 - Zombie Pigman knockback stunlocks Iron Golems, defeating their intended purpose.
  • MC-3122 - The player cannot change texture packs.
  • MC-3255 - Blaze fire ball crashes the game.
  • MC-3280 - Some textures appear as dark terrain.png images.
  • MC-3346 - Minecraft crashing every time the player gets on for a little while.
  • MC-3632 - Game only loads the chunk the player currently standing on when they logged in. Then the game freezes and crashes.
  • MC-3860 - Client crashes when underground near piston and redstone machine.
  • MC-3899 - Skeletons will come close to attacker.
  • MC-3934 - Particle overload when returning from AFK.
  • MC-3988 - Slime audio bug.
  • MC-4432 - Minecart off track and into walls.
  • MC-4644 - Mobs running in circles and not jumping when chasing/running away.
  • MC-4872 - Crash when shot by skeleton.
  • MC-4784 - Skeletons not retaliating to Iron Golems/Wolves.
  • MC-4792 - Minecraft crashed, exception world.
  • MC-4829 - Game client gets stuck on 'building terrain' screen.
