PoloCross

Developer: Third-i Productions
Platform: Windows

This game was stuffed away in a cardboard box and found 30 years later in a garage
This game was never completed and/or given a public release.
As a result of this, keep in mind that the developers might have used or deleted some of the content featured here, had the game actually been released.

PoloCross was initially advertised on developer Third-i's website in 1996 as "a first-person, high speed sport game, roughly in the same vein as CyberBlaster, MagBall, or BallBlazer". It was removed from their website by as late as June 1998.

Booting the Game

PoloCross requires dplay.dll to boot, which is not included in the build above. The DLL must be placed in the same directory as WINPOLO.EXE. Even with dplay.dll, the game still has issues rendering the correct palette on newer versions of Windows.

Additionally, a Direct X wrapper is required to actually get in-game. Attempting to start a match without one will result in a DirectDraw error message.

PoloCross has currently been tested on Windows 7, and needs further testing.

Miscellaneous Notes

The final dates modified for files range from January 24, 1995 to May 7, 1996.

There is no music in the game, but it will detect and play music in-game from any disc in a computer's main CD drive.

Overview

Hmmm...
To do:
A more in-depth look at rules and settings.

The game features one-on-one, two-on-two, and three-on-three modes. Each character can have a custom skate, and team names can be manually assigned. There are five stadiums: "Ice", "Multi-Level", "Obstacles", "Stands", and "Thirdi". The game features two sets of preset rules ("Standard Rules" and "Tournament Rules"), as well as customizable options.

Instant Replay

PoloCross-Windows-Instant-Replay.png

Pausing the game gives access to a robust Instant Replay feature. This instant replay actually renders the game with its proper palette, despite the in-game palette being broken. Manually resizing the Instant Replay output window will break the feature, and require a reboot of the game to function properly again.

The options menu is structured as follows:

  • Camera
    • Sideline
    • Red Goal
    • Blue Goal
    • Overhead
  • Tracking
    • Ball
    • Red Team
      • Red Skate 1
      • Red Skate 2
      • Red Skate 3
    • Blue Team
      • Blue Skate 1
      • Blue Skate 2
      • Blue Skate 3
  • Zoom
    • In
