This page details prerelease information and/or media for Portal 2.

This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Notes: This page is missing a huge number of pre-release videos and content, alongside some bad grammar and next-to-no referencing or sources for information.

After the release of The Orange Box, Valve took a break from working on games to experiment with other projects, at the request of Gabe Newell. Some of these projects included potential sequels and spin-offs of Portal.

Timeline

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Try to start expanding this timeline and provide specific dates for when much of this happened (if possible), provide details and preferably not "eras".
  • Clarify what Art Therapy Super Tests mean

2007-2008

  • August 2007 - March 2008 Directed Design Experiments - Various experiments were conducted to improve the Source engine. This stage is not really related to Portal 2 development.
  • December 2007 - December 2008 - F-Stop - Valve's fifth experiment featuring a camera. This would end up as a prequel to Portal.

2009

  • Early 2009 - ??? - Experimental - When Valve began work on an actual sequel to Portal, this stage was focused on creating new features for the game, many of which (light bridges, excursion funnels, aerial faith plates, and lasers) remained in the retail game.
  • Early 2009 - October - Core Hub - Valve's first attempt at a sequel to Portal. The story would have been about the Personality Cores taking over Aperture Science and using them to repair GLaDOS.
  • Summer - The developers of Tag: The Power of Paint are hired by Valve.

2009-2010

  • November 2009 - June 2010 - Multi-Core - Gels are implemented to the game and storyline rework has begun, making hub concept to be scrapped. The Storyline is closer to retail, but still there are differences though. Overgrown chambers style development has begun.

2010

  • June - August? - The team merge all the other cores into Wheatley and have him survive his supposed death, he immediately is set to become the new antagonist of the game. Underground finds a place in the game to suit as the origin of the Gels.
  • August-December - Underground is rapidly finished and Act 4 begins getting crunched on, only Chapter 8 gets finished and the Art Therapy Super Tests get canned, PotatOS is rewritten to be nicer to the player. The sp_aX_ convention is introduced.
  • September 3rd - The Full Co-Op Trailer is shown off at PAX 2010.
  • December 11th - The intro to co-op is shown off at the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards.

2011

  • February - April - The Content Lock is set in place but Chapter 9 still is getting finalised, optimisations begin across the whole game.
  • March 9th - Preload DVD build gets compiled.
  • March 16th - Xbox 360 retail release build gets compiled
  • March 25th - The first of the Aperture Investment Opportunity promotional videos called "Panels" is published onto YouTube.
  • March 29th - The second instalment of the Aperture Investment Opportunity videos: "Bot Trust"
  • April 6th - The third instalment of the Aperture Investment Opportunity videos: "Turrets" is released.
  • April 13th - The forth and last of the Aperture Investment Opportunity videos: "Boots" is released.
  • April 18th - Portal 2 is released for Windows and Mac digitally via Steam.
  • April 19th - Portal 2 is released to retail in North America.
  • April 21st - Portal 2 is released to retail in Europe.
