This is a sub-page of Proto:Colin McRae Rally 04.

For PC were featured two demo versions: Singleplayer Demo and Multiplayer Demo.

Singleplayer Demo

This demo was built on Jan 12, 2004, one and half months before the final build.

Frontend/UI

  • SoundBlaster splash showed before Codemasters intro.
  • Nvidia video is absent.
  • Here Frontend uses grey color for menus background, like in console versions. It was changed to white in Multiplayer Demo/Final game.
  • Only "Stages" game mode available. All tracks, except USA Stage 1, Japan Stage 2 and Finland Stage 2 are locked.
  • The only available car is Citroen Xsara.
  • Car rotates in menu (by pressing F1/F2) faster, then in final.
  • Menu for entering driver name is different.
  • Demo supports only one player. Controllers options also availbale only for one player and has "Accept" button, which is absent in final.
  • Sound options lacks EAX splash.

  • Demo uses another demo textures (located in Data/Textures). Files USP_text1_1.dds, USP_text1_2.dds, USP_text3_1.dds, USP_text3_2.dds contains different text (describing some unique PC features like EAX support; also this demo states about "95%' complete status). Also USP_text3_1.dds, USP_text3_2.dds have another graphics, if compared to simillar screen from PS2/Xbox demos. Those files exist only in this demo.

Text

  • All credits files (located in Data\FrontEnd) and all .lng with Whole in name (European localization files) are have some changes.

Sound

  • This demo supports interactive music themes, that works same as on PS2/Xbox version. In later Multiplayer demo and in final versions (doesn't matter, game patched or not) this feature doesn't work. Probably, it happened due to some bug, because .big files from Data/Sounds/FrontEnd are the same on Xbox/PC Demos/PC Final versions.
  • In Data/Sounds/Ambient presented Ambient.wav. It's same file as other ambient sounds from final game, where this file has duplicates with names of each available countries in game (except Sweden.wav, it's different file).
  • Citroen Xsara sound files xsara.big, xsaraM.big, xsarax.big and xsara.fl (located in Data/Sounds/Car) are same as 206.big, 206M.big, 206x.big, 206.fl for Peugeout 206 from final. For some reason, files for Citroen Xsara and Peugeout 206 were swapped very late in development.
  • xsara.cfg in demo lacks several strings:
EXHAUST_GEAR_UP_VOL
LOAD_OFF_VOL
IGNITION_VOL
STALL_VOL
  • Files crowdx.wav (where x=1,2,3,4,5) (loctaed in Data/Sound/Crowd) just are same duplictaes in demo. This sound different to final crowdx.wav. Looks like that crowd2.wav from final is simillar to this file from demo.
Demo Final
  • All files inside stonesex.big (located in Data/Sounds/Kickup) are different in demo and final.
Demo Final
  • Splits.big (located in Data/Sounds/Splits) uses other sounds in demo

Multiplayer Demo

This demo was built on Mar 11, 2004, a half month after the final build. All presented files, except cmr04.exe and network.cfg, are same as in retail release.

Frontend/UI

  • In overall looks very close to final game.
  • The color of menus background is white.
  • Only "Stages" and "Network" game modes available. All tracks, except Australia, Spain and Sweden Stage 1 are locked.
  • The only available car is Citroen Xsara.
  • "Network" features same three connections types, as final. Because GameSpy servers are shutdown now, those functions can't be correctly compared to their final counterparts, but due to demo build time, they might be almost the same.

Config files

  • Some values were changed in network.cfg: values for ISDN Bytes_Up and Bytes_Down were increased from 4600 to 9200, and value for BROADBAND Bytes_Up increased from 9200 to 18400.
