This is a sub-page of Proto:Crash Team Racing.
The Japanese Trial Demo of Crash Team Racing is a trial version of the game dated October 6th, 1999, nine days before the final PAL release version, and over a month before the final NTSC-J version. It was only released in Japan. The trial contains the full game, except you can't save your progress. It has some differences compared to the final NTSC-J version.
General Differences
- You can skip the Naughty Dog box screen. This feature was removed in the final Japanese version.

- The main theme is way shorter.
- Adventure and Time Trial options were moved to the bottom. This menu order is the same one shown in pre-release footage of the Japanese build.
- High Score menu is absent.
- Penta Penguin's cheat doesn't work in this version, so there is no way to unlock him.
- The turbo counter is enabled by default only in Time Trial mode. It doesn't show up in Arcade and Adventure modes.
- The end of a race doesn't show the maximum number of consecutive boosts achieved.
- Attempting to save the game will show the following message: Experience version so saving is disabled.
- Using hacks, you can play as Penta Penguin. Interestingly, his kart doesn't make any engine sounds in this build, which means Naughty Dog had just updated him for maximum stats, as they haven't yet made a proper engine noise for this new engine type.
