This page details one or more prototype versions of Glover 2.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Look for more differences between the two builds.
  • Add the build date if anyone is familiar with it.
This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

The earlier build of Glover 2 is far less complete than the later prototype, and shares more in common with the first Glover. Despite this, the foundation for several stages had already been laid out at this point in development.

This prototype was dumped by Team Carrot, the same team that found the later prototype. [1] It was bought on June 5, 2012. [2]

General Differences

  • The framerate is the same as the first Glover, being capped at 20 FPS. The later build raised this cap to 30, though it is rarely achievable on real hardware.
  • This build lacks Rumble Pak support, just like the first game.
  • Music from the first game is used in this build, though most of the time it's just the hub world theme.
  • The spell book pause screen is enabled by default.
  • Glover's B button attacks are completely different, not using the boxing glove.
    • On land, he will do an uppercut.
    • In midair, he will poke forward.

Graphical Differences

  • Glover is still using the same model from the first game. This would be changed to the higher-quality model found in the PC version of Glover in the later build, which has a larger star and less visible joints.
Early Build Later Build
Glover2Early-GloverModel.png Glover2Later-GloverModel.png
  • Many of the HUD and menu elements are completely different.
  • The balls that Glover can summon have a different appearance.
  • Many of the textures were changed in the later build.

Story Differences

The story from starting a new game progresses a little differently in this build.

  • Glovel has you gather more ingredients.
  • As a result of having to gather more ingredients, there are more tutorials from the Hub Chicken to go through.
  • After getting all the ingredients for Glovel's spell, Glovel does not fly out with the Magician's spell book.
  • Exiting the kitchen after completing these events will cause the game to crash.

Debug Controls

Hmmm...
To do:
Check the rest of the buttons.

Similar to the later prototype, plugging a controller into Port 4 will activate various debug features.

Z Display Debug Graph
C-Up / C-Down Float up/down
R Disable/Enable gravity
Start Activates a split-screen view. Possibly meant for a scrapped co-op mode.

Level Select

There are only 25 levels listed in the level select menu accessed by pressing L on the file select menu. A lot of them fail to load, however.

Map Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Add the rest of the comparison images.
  • There are a lot more differences to document, especially in the Garden.

GARDEN

Connecting Areas: KITCHEN, MOWER RACE TRACK, CORNFIELD

Lots of differences here:

  • Some of the wall textures feature Glover.
  • There is a water fountain with a giant lobster. Stepping underneath the lobster will take you to the Mower Race Track.
  • The Hub Chicken is sliding around near the lawn mower.
  • The tomato has a patterned texture, almost making it look like a strawberry.
  • The Hub Chicken's egg is black.

MOWER RACE TRACK

This map is very similar to the later prototype, but this build has music!

  • The walls are much simpler, and the rocks placed around the map in the later build are nowhere to be found.
  • The ranking pedestal is missing.
  • The on-screen arrow that points to the flags is absent.
  • Glover oftentimes misses the jump onto the lawn mower in the later build, but seems to be able to grab it more consistently in this build.

KITCHEN

Connecting Areas: BEDROOM, GARDEN

  • The passageway leading to the kitchen is completely different.
  • The water in the sink was completely removed in the later build.
  • The texture on the counter was changed to use slightly smaller tiles in the later build.
  • The door on the oven was changed.
  • The steam coming out of the pots on the stove was removed in the later build.

BEDROOM

Connecting Areas: KITCHEN

  • The picture of the Magician on vacation is missing.
  • The secret Space Invaders minigame from fist slamming the N64 is absent.
  • The potted plant next to the bed hasn't been added yet.
  • The drawer can't be pulled out yet, but can be grabbed onto. A 1-up was added inside of it in the later build.
  • The red door would be removed in the later build.

CORNFIELD

Connecting Areas: GARDEN, WOOD

  • The layout seems to be identical to the later prototype.
  • The runes and cauldron are absent.
  • The scarecrow has a simpler design and does not attack you.
  • The crows are missing.
  • The gate blocking the path to WOOD is shorter.
Early Build Later Build
Glover2Early-CornField.png Glover2Later-CornField.png

WOOD

Connecting Areas: CORNFIELD

  • This area is in really bad shape. While it is modeled out, the textures are extremely glitchy, to the point where the water can sometimes look like electricity.
  • The layout is completely different.
  • Lots of objects rise in and out of the ground and walls.

MEAT COTTAGE INT

Connecting Areas: MEAT COTTAGE EXT

  • This area is overall the same as in the later build, albeit missing details.
  • The meatball you can steal is missing.
  • The character that resides here in the later build is nowhere to be found.
  • Heading out through the entrance would take you to MEAT COTTAGE EXT, but since that map hasn't been implemented yet, only a black screen will be shown.
Early Build Later Build
Glover2Early-MeatCottageInt.png Glover2Later-MeatCottageInt.png

GAMBLING DEN INT

  • A very simple version of the Gambling Den using placeholder textures.
  • The minigames have not been implemented yet.

HARBOUR

  • In the later prototype, this map is where the Magician is taking a vacation in the intro. The intro has not been added yet in this version.
  • The palm tree is located on the left side of the dock instead of the cliff on the right side.
  • The water uses a glitchy green texture.
  • Many of the objects either have no texture, or use flat colors.
  • The map's texturework in general is a lot simpler.

VILLAGE

  • The area is modeled out, but the texturework is rough at this point.
  • No objects or NPCs have been added yet.
Early Build Later Build

OBSERVATORY

  • There doesn't appear to be anything in this area at first glance, though some modeling work has been done.
  • The walls have collision, and there is a pole that Glover can walk behind.
Early Build Later Build
Glover2Early-Observatory.png Glover2Later-Observatory.png

VALLEY

  • The layout appears to be the mostly the same as the later prototype, just lacking textures.
    • The rear entrance is missing.
    • The body of frozen water is shaped differently.
    • The pillars under the ice are formed in a square rather than a line.
  • When entering the map, an avalanche does not occur.
  • Snow does not fall.
  • The gong is disassembled.

MINE CART

  • The mine cart hasn't been implemented yet, so Glover can just walk on the tracks.
Early Build Later Build

MINES

  • Same as MINE CART, but darker.
Early Build Later Build
Glover2Early-Mines.png Glover2Later-Mines.png

BONE BRIDGE

A very barebones version of the map found in the later build.

  • The mouth-like entrance would be removed in the later build.
  • None of the objects are present.
  • The pit below the bridge isn't bottomless. In the later build, the runes would be added here.
  • The color scheme of the area is totally different.

MULTI 1

A multiplayer stage where the goal is to score points by dropping fruit into the glowing circle in the center of the map. Bombs will spawn and can be used to attack the other players.

  • Each Glover wears a different colored shirt to indicate the player number. The later build strangely ditched this idea, making all the players look the same.
  • A flat plane is used as the playing field in this build. The later build would change this into a more detailed platform.
