There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

To put things simply, Notch asked what his new game, at the time just called "Cave Game", should be called. A lot of different names were suggested, but Notch decided to pick "Minecraft: Order of the Stone", which would later be shortened to simply "Minecraft" for copyright reasons. Little did the person who suggested that name know that this game would have became the world's best selling game.

Minecraft: Order of the Stone

Not much is actually known about this sub-dev-stage. No versions from it have re-surfaced yet, and even simply the file names of these versions are unknown, nor how many versions were created. It is believed that the Classic-style natural terrain generation was implemented somewhere in this sub-dev-stage, however this may have been implemented in the first version of the next sub-development stage.

It is often believed that a version called "rd-20090515", even to the point it's listed as a version in the official Minecraft launcher, exists and was part of this dev stage. However, this version does not actually exist, and attempting to download it from the MC launcher results in downloading rd-161348 instead.
