Proto:NBA Jam Tournament Edition (SNES)
This page details one or more prototype versions of NBA Jam Tournament Edition (SNES).
Players
There are quite a few players in the prototype that didn't make it into the final game.
NBA Players
Secret Players
To do: There is still more to document here. Initials and button codes also exist for some NBA All-Stars and all of the Rookies. As no Rookies team exists, this is the only way (aside from PAR codes) to play as the latter. Also, some of the secret players who exist both in this prototype and the final version had their button codes changed. It may also be a good idea to list the secret players that are missing from this prototype. |
To use the codes below: At the Initial Entry screen, highlight the first letter in the "Initials" column, hold Start, and press the button indicated in the equivalent position of the "Buttons" column. Repeat for the remaining two letters. An underscore refers to the blank space character, while an asterisk means any button can be used to enter the initial (holding Start is not required).
Alternatively, Pro Action Replay (PAR) code 7E16CBxx 7E16CC00 (where xx is one of the numbers in the Value column) can be used to change player 1 to one of the secret players.
Note that Gore uses Sharone Wright's portrait as a placeholder.
Interestingly, everyone from Neil Hislop to Gary Vine IS playable in the Sega CD version of the original Jam.
Graphical Changes
Iguana Entertainment Logo
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The prototype version uses the Iguana Entertainment logo from the original NBA Jam. This was replaced with a new logo in the final version.
Dennis Rodman
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
In the prototype, Dennis Rodman's portrait has black hair as it does in the Arcade version. This final version changes it to white to match his in-game head sprite.
Kevin Edwards
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
New Jersey Nets player Kevin Edwards erroneously uses Milwaukee Bucks player Blue Edwards' portrait. This was corrected in the final version. Blue Edwards was included in the original NBA Jam and the arcade version of Tournament Edition, but not in any the home versions of the latter.
Glenn Robinson
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
In the prototype version of Glenn Robinson's picture, his shoulders are less visible, and his head is 2 pixels narrower than in the final version. Also, the palette inexplicably changed--notice that in the final version's portrait, the darker shades of his skin tone are dithered and the red stripes on his jersey are slightly brighter.
Chris Kirby
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Programmer Chris Kirby's face looks hand-painted in the prototype. It was replaced with a portrait that actually looks more like a photo in the final version.
Steve Snake
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Steve Snake's photo was also replaced entirely. Between proto and final, he removed the tinted glasses and appears to have gotten a haircut.
Jason Falcus
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Bizarrely, Jason Falcus's picture is just a floating head in the prototype! It is possible that this is only a larger version of his front-facing in-game head sprite (or an earlier draft of it) being used as a placeholder.
Mike Muskett
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
"Mad" Mike's photo seems almost as out of place as Chris Kirby's. Thankfully, it was also replaced entirely in the final version.
Dan Feinstein "Weasel"
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Weasel's portrait is slightly smaller.
Hillary Clinton
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Like with Tipper Gore, Hillary Clinton uses Sharone Wright's portrait as a placeholder.
Jay Moon
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Secret Player Jay Moon's in-game head sprite has darker skin and lighter hair in the prototype than the final version.
Team Logos
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The script portion of the Dallas Mavericks logo is unchanged from the preceding game in the series. The final version changes its color from blue to white to improve legibility.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
"Sacramento" is missing from the logo in the prototype.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
In the prototype, the game's logo is used as a logo for the secret team of all-stars, then referred to as JAM. It is completely replaced with the NBA logo for the final version's Rookies and All-Stars teams.
Team Roster Changes
- Players with red names indicate roster differences between the prototype and final versions.
- Players with italicized names have to be unlocked by beating all 27 teams (or by pressing Start, Y, Up, Down, B, Left, A, Right, Down, Start at the title screen, then entering JAM as initials).
