This is a sub-page of Proto:Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus.

Hmmm...
To do:
Comparison shots from the final. As well as more of the unused dialog present in the SLY.WAL file.

During E3 2002, Sucker Punch released a demo disc of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. The game allows the player to explore and beat the first, second, and third levels of Raleigh's area. It has many noticeable differences from the final retail release.

The files on the disc are dated April 12, 2002. A video of the game can be seen here.

Main Menu

The retail main menu takes place on a rooftop in Paris. The E3 demo's menu takes place in Raleigh's Retreat, known as Prowling The Grounds in the retail release.

General Differences

Checkpoints in the demo had Zag inside of a chest taking a picture of the player, rather than a Sly hologram.
A different model for the life pickup.
The page Sly pulls out of the vault uses a different model.
  • Sly's nose is blue rather than black, and he looks more serious than in the final.
  • During the Binoc-u-com cutscenes, Sly uses what appears to be an earlier model with brighter colors and a slightly different face model.
  • All coins have a picture of Sly's face on them. In the retail release they have different designs for each level.
  • The safes have strange collision and cannot be destroyed if Sly is grounded.
  • Coins also have more realistic physics than in the retail release. In retail, this makes coins easier to collect on non-flat surfaces like slopes and hills.
  • Clue bottles have a picture of a wrench on them rather than a question mark (possibly a reference to Rocket: Robot on Wheels). The Clue Bottle model also differs from the final; it is flatter and resembles a whiskey bottle whereas the final model resembles a beer bottle.
  • Sly has a different voice actor than in the retail release.
  • The vault opening animation is less complex. Sly approaches the vault and takes the item inside with no additional flair. Most notably, he doesn't leave a Sly Cooper calling card in place of the object.
  • The design of the vault differs slightly from its final version.
  • When a key is collected, the lights don't dim and the camera does not follow Sly.
  • When using the Binoc-u-com, the music stops playing and the move/zoom labels do not appear.
  • All of the enemies have color changes and other minor differences. Some even resemble characters from Rocket: Robot on Wheels such as Whoopie the Walrus and Tinker.
  • When climbing on ropes, Sly doesn't put his cane in his mouth.
  • Some of the HUD icons are different.
  • Checkpoints in this build are represented by treasure chests instead of small machines that project the Sly logo. When approached, a weasel-like character named Zag comes out and takes a picture. If Sly hits the chest while it is closed, Zag can be heard giggling inside. Zag doesn't appear at all in the final game.
  • The model for extra lives is different.
  • The map has a different appearance.
A different design for the map.

Level Differences

There are minor differences between every level and their final counterparts. The number of clue bottles in every level vary from the retail version, and almost all of the clue bottles are in different locations.

Outside Raleigh's (aka "A Stealthy Approach")

The van has an outdated Sly logo on its doors.
  • The Cooper van's doors have different eyes than in the final.
  • Some conversations, like the one that tells you how to latch on to hooks, are not yet implemented.
  • The key at the end of the first level is floating in the air, rather than being in a display case.
  • Although Bentley tells you how to open the first vault in the demo, he doesn't in the final version.
  • The level has slightly different designs when compared to the final, such as the tutorial area not having any hooks to latch on to.
  • Many parts of the level are different, such as near the beginning, you can walk in the shallow water. Also, midway through the level, there is a simple path you can follow. However, the final game has a gate and a cane swinging tutorial.

Raleigh's Retreat (aka "Prowling The Grounds")

  • The unplayable level's doors are closed.
  • The second half of the level is blocked by an invisible wall.

Moolah Museum (aka "High Class Heist")

The dollar sign effect on holographic markers is not present in the final.
  • In the beginning of the level, Bentley's voice clips are different.

Readin' Room (aka "A Cunning Disguise")

  • Enemies are different colors.

Unused Text

All of this text is never displayed in-game, but it is loaded into RAM along with the level and the normal text that is used in the demo.

Outside Raleigh's

Hello Sly, do you read me?
Yeah Bentley, I hear ya.
I've just identified a potential problem. See that filthy gate over there?
It blocks the only road going into Raleigh's hideout!
Hrmmm, OK. This'll be a good chance for me to bust out my new climb move.
Remember, you can only climb on certain objects, like ropes and pipes...
... or like that ladder over there?
Yeah, that looks safe enough.
Now all you have to do is get close, jump, and hit the &2O&. button to grab it.
Yeah, yeah, jump and hit the &2O&. to grab, no problem.

This first scene of unused text is shown in action with voice acting in the Sly Cooper Evolution video featured in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, however, in this video, Sly is still referred to as "JT" and both Sly and Bentley have different voices. https://youtu.be/JtAlxe-qcw8?t=125

See those searchlights over there?
If they spot you, you'll be roasted whole! Are you sure you want to continue on?
Because it's all very, very dangerous! And, you know, the cops could show up at any time!
Listen, Bentley, no oversized flashlight is gonna scare me away! I'm the best thief ever!
Take a look at that gigantic boat.
It's got to be Raleigh's hide out!
No wonder it's raining so hard, he's built an enormous storm machine! But why create such disagreeable weather?
Well, I don't know, but it sure hasn't helped out the local yacht club, that's for sure!
You know, Sly, he probably used the Thievius Raccoonus to steal enough money to build this place.
Yeah, well I'm gonna steal that book back and kick Raleigh's water-tight frog butt in the process!

Raleigh's Retreat

Uh, bad news Sly. I've analyzed the Hide Out's blueprints and there's only one way to get up there, but to do it you'll need to get through this high voltage power tube!
What!?, you need thicker glasses. That thing has enough juice flowing through it to fry 40 raccoons.
163 raccoons actually... But for once it's not as bad as it looks.
Destroy this power generator and you'll turn off the electricity in the tube. However, you'll need a few more of Raleigh's treasure keys to get at it.
I've marked the areas you need to hit with holographic markers. Follow them to your objectives.
Nice job, partner.

Readin' Room

Sly! This whole place is booby-trapped! Did you see what happened to those poor, yet disgusting, rats!
Yeah, I'd hate to be the janitor around here.
This is no time for wisecracks.
If you step on that rug . . .You'll be shot full of darts!
This is far too dangerous, we need to terminate the mission!
Terminate! Do I have to tell you again, I'm the best . . .
. . . thief ever. Yeah, I know you think that. But Sly, come on, this is too much.
Hrmmmm....What if I jumped inside that barrel for protection?
You know, that might just work.
Guaranteed, pal.

Moolah Museum

Pay dirt, Sly! This place is loaded with ritzy stuff, and you know what that means... tighter security.
You're going to have to be extra sneaky to get the treasure key in a place like this.

Unused Audio

Unused Movement Tutorial

An unused audio tutorial in which Bentley goes over how to control the game with Sly. The first two lines are reused in the scene where Bentley warns Sly about the gate at the start of A Stealthy Approach.

Sound Character Transcript/Text
Bentley Bentley calling Sly Cooper, do you read me? Come in! Come in!
Sly Can ya yell a little louder so the guards can hear you too?
Bentley Sorry, but it is imperative that we review the fundamentals of your locomotion mechanics.
Sly How bout' in English Bentley?
Bentley We need to talk about how to move around.

Bentley Exactly.
Bentley Now to jump, hit the X button.
