This is a sub-page of Proto:Spyro the Dragon (PlayStation)/July 18th, 1998 build.

Pretty much every level in this game uses a different track to the one used in the final game. This page lists the differences in the soundtrack files and the differences in the tracks used by each level.

All levels presented here use their final name, and all tracks listed are named by the level they're used in in the final game, to avoid confusion.

For the most part, the music seems to be unchanged from the June 15th prototype.

Notably, also, the Peace Keepers theme's intro is significantly shorter on the first loop than it is in the final game. All prototype tracks are quieter and more dynamic than the retail tracks.

PETEXA0.STR, PETEXA3.STR and PETEXA4.STR are all identical. As PETEXA4.STR was not present in the June 15th prototype, and its addition allows music to be played in more of the Gnasty's World levels, as discussed below.

As the themes used in-game match the order they appear in the STR files, tracks 3-7 on PETEXA4.STR are unused duplicate tracks.

In-Game Tracks

The tracks used by levels in-game perfectly match the order they appear in the STR files:

Level Name Track Used

Toasty Ice Cavern
Sunny Flight Title Theme

Gnorc Gnexus Peace Keepers
Gnorc Cove Alpine Ridge
Twilight Harbor Stone Hill
Gnasty Gnorc Artisans
Gnasty's Loot Dark Hollow

*Note that Gnorc Gnexus uses Toasty's theme in the final game.

Due to an audio glitch, all themes played in the Beast Makers worlds loop every 2 minutes and 4 seconds, the same length as Stone Hill's theme.

Changes from the June 15th Prototype

Due to shifts in the level IDs of some of the Gnasty's World stages, as well as the addition of an extra STR file to cover the stages which didn't have music assigned yet, these levels changed in their music the most.

Specifically, in the June 15th prototype, due to there being only 32 themes present despite the presence of 33 levels, no theme plays in Gnasty Gnorc's level. Two more levels were added since that version, and so the extra STR file covers the final three level's themes.

Level Jun 15 Jul 18
Gnorc Gnexus Not present Peace Keepers
Gnorc Cove Peace Keepers Alpine Ridge
Twilight Harbor Alpine Ridge Stone Hill
Gnasty Gnorc No music Artisans
Gnasty's Loot Not present Dark Hollow

Dragon Dialogue Tracks

Several themes which aren't present in the soundtrack files are present in the background of some of the dragons' dialogue. This suggests these themes had been worked on but hadn't been added to the game's STR files yet:

  • Several dragons in Dry Canyon use the Dry Canyon theme.
  • Several dragons in Ice Cavern use the Cliff Town theme.
  • Both Beast Makers dragons use the Beast Makers theme.
