Proto:The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask/Preview Demo/Text Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of Proto:The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask/Preview Demo.

Global Changes

  • Princess, King and Royal Family have been changed in all messages in the final version to say princess, king and royal family, respectively.
  • For the Curiosity Shop owner, I'm serious! has been changed to I kid you not! in all his messages. The former text was used by the fisherman in Ocarina of Time, whose model was used for the Curiosity Shop owner.
  • In all messages where Darmani is called after you have beaten Goht, his name is printed instantly in the final version as a kind of exclamation. In the preview demo, it flows in like all the other text.
  • For the four Giants messages, the actual text of the Giants is colored white in the prototype but blue in the final (same as the Tatl text).
  • The Post Office was called Post House in the prototype version.
  • The name of a Clock Town character was misspelled as Muto in pretty much all the prototype messages. It was fixed to the correct name Mutoh in the final.
  • Messages of receiving Tingle's map aren't spaced away from the map icon in the final version, to avoid overflow issues.

Individual Changes

You found a Stray Fairy!
This is your ?th one!

In the preview demo, you had to close this text box using A. This was probably irritating because it's too easy to accidentally press A while this textbox appears. Therefore, it has been set to disappear on its own in the final.

The cows always seem bothered
and frazzled, and I'm finding
broken bottles everywhere...
Who's doing it, I don't know...

Another text box you had to close using A. This is during the cart ride without a stop before the next load, making it possible for the rest of the conversation to be skipped.

LINK?
That's a nice name, but...

There was no pause in the text scrolling when Romani says Link's name in the introduction. A pause was added in the final that makes it look like she is pondering on the name.

Looks like the two shields were confused in the preview demo... It was corrected in the final. Additionally, a typo was fixed in the Mirror Shield message.

Someone really messed up the sentence in these messages. It was corrected in the final release.

It's easy to see how this was changed. "Lottery Tickets" is a really unclear name.

As reflected in the American prototype, the dog race was originally numbered 2000 in the Japanese version, likely after the year the game was released. The final American version decided to change this in favor of a pun on the Daytona 500 race, which is the biggest race in NASCAR.

Yet another small punctuation change.

Preview Demo American
Oh...I don't want to grow old... It's tough getting old...

This message is completely missing from the prototype version. It was probably added because without it, the conversation seems to "skip" noticeably.
