This is a sub-page of Shining Force III.

Early Title Screen

Hmmm...
To do:
Get the file name.

An .spr containing a very early title screen is still present on the disc. This was used in earlier versions of the game as a placeholder of sorts.

Unused Sprites

CBE23

  • Conrad

SF3Conrad.gif
ID:0338
Only the sprites where he's slumped over in a chair are used, but it seems he was meant to move around at some point. Also worth noting that he appears to be missing a frame for the back.

XBTL99.CHR

  • Early Treasure chest

SF3TreasureXBTL99 0 0.gif
ID:0199
A treasure chest, similar to the ones in Shining the Holy Ark. The final goes with a different design.

XBTL115.CHR

  • Edmund

SF3Edmundground.gif
ID:0128
Oddly, using the same ID as Blue Dragon in other maps is this sprite of what appears to be Edmund in a death throe. It's possible the original intention was for General Garzel to actually kill Edmund, rather than simply knock him off the bridge.

XBALCHR.CHR

  • Fiderit

SF3Fiderit.gif
ID:0139
Only the rightmost frame is used for a cutscene.

XOP101.CHR

  • Masqurin(Opening Cutscene)

SF3 Masqurin rolling.gif
ID:0002
The developers decided to animate this sprite from every angle, though most of it isn't used.

XOP102.CHR

  • Grace(Opening Cutscene)

SF3 Grace sitting.gif
ID:0003
Similar to the previous, most of the frames are not used by the game.

XTEST.CHR

  • Dantares

SF3Dantares getting up.gif
ID:0001
This can only be found in the initial 1.006 Japanese release.

  • Black cat

SF3Kitty.gif
ID:0141
The cat used for the Dusty Village cutscene in Scenario 2, albeit unfinished and with black fur instead of white.

  • Red Dragon

SF3RedDragon.gif
ID:0126
A similar dragon shows up in a cutscene late in the game, but even this is another case where more of the sprite was completed than what was used.

XTWNTEST.CHR

  • Man

SF3Unusedman.gif
ID:0142
An NPC that was oddly not used in any other .CHR.

  • Woman 1

SF3UnusedWoman1.gif
ID:0063
The file these NPCs are in was used as a placeholder in earlier versions of the game for maps that did not have a finished .CHR.

  • Monk

SF3Monk.gif
ID:0064
Mainly used as a placeholder in early versions of the game. This may also be related to a cut enemy named "Monk"

  • Woman 2

SF3UnusedWoman2.gif
ID:0065

Spells

The item sheet contains a full sprite set for spells, including many, many leftovers from Shining the Holy Ark that were oddly never replaced. These all appear to fit in the gap between Return(ID:15) and Phoenix(ID:26), which the game reserves for items and certain enemy attacks, however the icons themselves don't appear to be called by the game at any point.

FACE64B.DAT/FACE64C.DAT

Hmmm...
To do:
This is the US version. It's unlikely, but possible these were dummied out of the original japanese release.

SF3FACE64BandC.png
Both files are placeholders for Scenario 2 and 3's teams. Though at this stage, they simply reuse Synbios' team portraits

Unused Sprite Set Placement

Each area and scene of the game stores necessary sprites in a .CHR file, which a particular map or cutscene calls for when needed. However some of these files contain sprites that while used elsewhere, are never used in that specific part of the game.

Benetram

Around the middle point of the game, Benetram (ID: 0076) leaves the party, and doesn't appear again until the ending. However, XBTL118(Volcano Hole), XBTL120(Flagard Castle), and XBTL121(Road to Lookover) all still contain Benetram's sprite.

XBALCHR

For some reason Medion (0020), Campbell (0021), and Grantack (0128) are all loaded into Balsamo Church spriteset.

Unused Textures

  • Waterfall

Viewing Battle 14 on an Yaiba Sanshiro before version 3.4.2 will show that the Waterfall has been wallpapered over with 3 slightly different placeholder textures
