SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox)/Unused Text
This is a sub-page of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox).
Battle for Bikini Bottom has a substantial amount of unused text. While most of it is simply archived compiler information generated during development, there are various other unused snippets of text that remain from ideas or concepts that were later scrapped. There are also some remnants of an E3 demo, an assorted series of developer notes, and some amusing placeholder dialogue.

Bikini Bottom (Hub)
Evil Bubble Buddy
In Bikini Bottom, Bubble Buddy has some ominous dialogue that was likely written by a bored programmer.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
bubblebuddy_begin_text | Welcome to my nightmare! Hie the hench though spongey freak. |
bubblebuddy_end_text | Well done, SpongeBob. Now die. |
bubblebuddy_failure_text | What about GETOUTTAHERE didn't you understand? |
bubblebuddy_reminder_text0 | I said beat it. |
bubblebuddy_success_text | Thanks for leaving me alone. Repeat as needed. |
Bubble Buddy's Bash Reminder
The second line of this conversation between SpongeBob and Bubble Buddy gets cut off due to SpongeBob's response accidentally being made as a separate text file, with the filename being the code telling the text file which sound clip to play. The sound clip referenced is also still in the game.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
bubblebuddy_reminder_text | Bubble Buddy: Don't forget, to defeat robots or tikis that are directly above you, press the {insert:button_bashattack_text} button. |
{sound:sbhb01024;speaker | SpongeBob: Gotcha, Bubble Buddy! |
Patrick Sock Trade
Before trading, Patrick was meant to ask SpongeBob first. In the final game, Patrick automatically trades a Golden Spatula if SpongeBob has enough socks.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
patrick_description_text | Do you want to trade 10 socks for a Golden Spatula? Yes/No |
patrick_reminder_text | |
patrick_failure_text | Come back when you're ready to trade. |
Mr. Krabs' 9th and 10th Spatulas
This text suggests that Mr. Krabs may have had two additional Golden Spatulas planned. The 9th Golden Spatula would've required 9,000 Shiny Objects, and the 10th Golden Spatula would've required 10,000.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
mrkrabsspat9_begin_text | Mr. Krabs: Yer treasure chest's looking a bit light, boy. Do you think I've got bilge water on the brain? I ain't runnin' a charity here. Come back when you've got 9000 Shiny Objects to trade. |
mrkrabsspat9_description_text | Mr. Krabs: So, do you want to trade 9000 Shiny Objects for a Golden Spatula? Yes/No |

mrkrabsspat10_begin_text | Mr. Krabs: Yer treasure chest's looking a bit light, boy. Do you think I've got bilge water on the brain? I ain't runnin' a charity here. Come back when you've got 10,000 Shiny Objects to trade. |
mrkrabsspat10_description_text | Mr. Krabs: So, do you want to trade 10,000 Shiny Objects for a Golden Spatula? Yes/No |

Box Office Guy
The Box Office Guy in Bikini Bottom has several variations of his final dialogue left unused. The lines of dialogue not normally seen are notated in red. Strangely, the text files that ended up being used for him are labeled boatattendant_original, implying that the used lines were initially meant to be placeholders (though this has not been confirmed).
Filename | Text | Comments |
---|---|---|
boattendant_begin_text | Box Office Guy: Hello sir, may I help you? SpongeBob: One movie ticket, my good man. |
Every line after SpongeBob's requests a ticket is unused and lacks accompanying audio. No dialogue is audibly spoken either way. |
boattendant_description_text | Box Office Guy: Hello sir, may I help you? SpongeBob: One movie ticket, my good man. |
No dialogue is audibly spoken by the Box Office Guy. Additionally, Box Office Guy only says "Yes, sir." after SpongeBob pays for his ticket in the final. The word "theater" is also not highlighted. |
boattendant_reminder_text | Box Office Guy: Hello sir, may I help you? SpongeBob: One movie ticket, my good man. |
The Reminder text is the same to the Description text, but this time no dialogue is spoken audibly by both SpongeBob or the Box Office Guy. |
boattendant_failure_text | Box Office Guy: Please come back when you're ready to part with your shiny objects. | This text is not audibly spoken, and no voice line exists in the files for it. |
boattendant_success_text | Box Office Guy: Enjoy the show. | |
boattendant_end_text | SpongeBob: What if I want to watch a movie I haven't seen? Like could I see 'Death Fish 2000' Box Office Guy: I'm sorry sir, we can only play the movie that we have. |
No dialogue is audibly spoken by the Box Office Guy. This dialogue is also slightly reworded in a few areas. The question mark after "Death Fish 2000" is also absent. The apostrophe in Procrastination was also moved between the word and the question mark in the final. |
Patrick's Rock Alternate Text
In Patrick's Rock, there is alternate text for collecting Patrick's Socks. Differences are denoted in red. Earning a Golden Spatula originally required 8 Socks instead of 10. There are other subtle differences such the word "sock" not being highlighted. Patrick is also using his Player-colored name text rather than his NPC one, though that is not visible in the example. The rest of the alternate text is identical to the final, but it lacks keywords being highlighted and Patrick using his Player name instead.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
patrick_begin_text | SpongeBob: Hey Patrick. Nice sock. Patrick: What sock? |
Patrick's Jenga Ship
In Patrick's Rock, there is a text meant for testing, a reference to the Homestar Runner cartoon Where's The Cheat?.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
patrick_test_text | You shanked my jenga ship! {signal:0;need} |
Sandy's Treedome Reminder
In Sandy's Treedome, there is a leftover reminder for the robot ambush.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
sandy_reminder_text | Sandy: Don't even think of speaking to me until you've got my house sorted out right. |
Hub Warps
Warp text found in the main hub (HB01).
Filename | Text | Comments |
---|---|---|
EXIT_PG01_TEXT | Press R1 to go to the Playground | Some early warp text found in Bikini Bottom for the SpongeBall Arena. Oddly, the actual SpongeBall Arena is referred to as PG12 within the game's files and not PG01. |
TOLLBOOTH_TEXT_01 | You need 10 Golden Spatulas to open this gate. | This text suggests that the amount of Golden Spatulas needed to enter the Poseidome was originally 10 instead of 15. |
Spatula_exit_boss3_text | You need 75 Golden Spatulas to enter this area | This text suggests that the final boss may have originally been accessed from the main hub (like the other main bosses) rather than from inside the Chum Bucket. |
Pineapple Warps
There are various early warp messages in the files for SpongeBob's House; apparently, the game originally had a system where the task descriptions would change depending on where you were.
Filename | Text |

WARP ATTIC TXT | Press R1 to enter attic |
WARP BEDROOM TXT | Press R1 to enter bedroom |
WARP EXIT TXT | Press R1 to go back outside |

Squidward's Tiki Warp
Squidward's Tiki contains one early text for leaving it.
Filename | Text |

Shady Shoals Warps
Some early warp text can be found in the files for Shady Shoals.
Filename | Text | Comments |
---|---|---|
EXIT_H150_TEXT | Press R1 to go outside | The text contained in this file can be found in multiple levels under different names (WARP EXIT TXT in the Pineapple, EXIT_TEXT in Squidward's Tiki and Patrick's Rock, EXIT_HUB2_TEXT in Sandy's Treedome, EXIT_H190_TEXT in the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket, etc.) |
EXIT_BC10_TEXT | Press R1 to enter the Barnacle Cave | This text still refers to the Mermalair as the Barnacle Cave, its early name. |
Robot Viewer Epilogue
There is text for the Robot Viewer in the Police Station that suggests that it would've provided info about the robot's whereabouts after the events of the game.

Robot Viewer No Info Title
There is unused title text for if a robot hasn't been unlocked in the Robot Viewer. Only the body text is used in the final.
Filename | Text |

Jellyfish Fields
Mr. Krabs in Jellyfish Lake
There's a temporary text file for Mr. Krabs greeting SpongeBob in Jellyfish Lake which doesn't happen in the final game. Talking to Mr. Krabs as SpongeBob begins a conversation very similar to one given to Patrick previously (assuming King Jellyfish hasn't been defeated yet).
Filename | Text |
---|---|
mrkrabs_begin_text | Hello, SpongeBob. |
SpongeBob and King Jellyfish in Spork Mountain
In the files for Spork Mountain, there are text files that contain dialogue for the cutscene at the beginning of the King Jellyfish boss fight. It's possible that these lines were simply placeholder text that was used while the cutscene was being worked on. Note that King Jellyfish's nametag is not actually defined within the files for Spork Mountain itself. SpongeBob's second line of dialogue goes entirely unused, despite being fully voiced. The name text for King Jellyfish does not exist in the files, but they were added below for reading convenience.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
jellyfish_description_text |
King Jellyfish: La la-la la-la. |
jellyfish_success_text | SpongeBob: Whew, that was close. King Jellyfish: (spits up Jar of Jellyfish Jelly) Oooouuuuuuuch. |
E3 Demo Leftovers
Some leftover text from an E3 demo can still be found in Jellyfish Fields.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
temp_e3_patrick_text | E3 Demo Feature. Press the {i:button_pickup_text} button to Pick up the Freezy Fruit, and then again to throw the Freezy Fruit onto the Goo. |
opm_demo_exit_text | End of demo. Thank you for playing SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom. |
There's also this unused bit of warp text that can be found in Spork Mountain, suggesting the E3 demo bypassed Jellyfish Lake entirely.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
demo_exit_jf02_text | Press the {i:button_exitlevel_text} Button to go to Jellyfish Caves. |
Downtown Bikini Bottom
Unused Sign Text in Downtown Rooftops
Filename | Text |
---|---|
bbounce_springboard_text | If you Bubble-Bounce this springboard, it will spring you higher than normal. |
A sign hidden inside of the lighthouse in Downtown Rooftops has some text accompanying it that discusses a nonexistent game mechanic that only seems to work for the trampoline behind the vendors in Goo Lagoon Pier.
Goo Lagoon
Early Goo Lagoon Dialogue
In the early versions of Goo Lagoon in the GameCube version, Larry, Bubble Buddy and Mrs. Puff have some placeholder dialogue that completely lacks personality.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
larry_begin_text | Hey, SpongeBob. Come on over. |
larry_end_text | Thanks for your help, SpongeBob |
larry_failure_text | You still need to turn the reflector on the island. |
bubblebuddy_begin_text | Well, hello there SpongeBob! |
bubblebuddy_end_text | Well done, SpongeBob. |
bubblebuddy_failure_text | You're not done yet. |
bubblebuddy_reminder_text | There's a Golden Spatula at the top of this sand castle. |
bubblebuddy_success_text | Congratulations, SpongeBob |
mrspuffs_begin_text | SpongeBob! Please help! |
SpongeBob's Dream
Bubble Buddy in SpongeBob's Dream
Bubble Buddy was meant to appear in SpongeBob's Dream on the island between the level's entrance and Sandy's Dream. In fact, Bubble Buddy's .VIL file (which places NPCs and enemies into a level) is still in the game, but he is rendered invisible and thus cannot be interacted with. Unlike most other unused dialogue, bubblebuddy_description_text has functioning camera signals, which work perfectly if Bubble Buddy's .VIL file is set to be visible, suggesting that he was removed somewhat late into development. He was likely removed for being extraneous and unnecessary as a task-giver.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
bubblebuddy_description_text | Bubble Buddy: There's something odd about those people floating above their houses. SpongeBob: They're just dreaming in my dream. In fact, you yourself are just a tiny ingredient in the casserole of my dream. |
bubblebuddy_success_text | See. I told you something was odd about those things. |
bubblebuddy_end_text | Nice dream. I think I'll stay a while. |
bubblebuddy_reminder_text_1 | The images of your friends. They're very odd. |
bubblebuddy_reminder_text_2 | I can't quite put my finger on what's wrong with those... oh wait, what finger? |
SpongeBob and Plankton in Sandy's Dream
Filename | Text |
---|---|
plankton_sb_text | SpongeBob: Hello, Plankton. Plankton: SpongeBob, my favorite (and only) lackey. |
This conversation is technically used, but it is impossible for SpongeBob to interact with Plankton in Sandy's Dream under normal circumstances. Notably, this unused conversation is one of the few that are fully voiced. This dialogue can be seen and heard in the game's remake, where the rules of Hans stopping the player from falling are slightly less strict, allowing SpongeBob to easily get on the slide in Sandy's Dream and reach Plankton.
Larry in Sandy's Dream
Larry has some incredibly elaborate placeholder text in the files for Sandy's Dream.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
larry_begin_text | blah |
Time Challenge in Sandy's Dream
There's some leftover text in Sandy's Dream that seems to indicate that the slide was originally intended to be a time challenge, much in the same vein as the slides in Sand Mountain and Kelp Forest. A timer also remains in the level's files, showing the slide was meant to be beaten in 190 seconds.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
race_fail_text | You lose. Try again. |
race_succeed_text | You win... er, something. |
Squidward in Mr. Krabs' Dream
Squidward in Mr. Krabs' dream has two cut lines that remain in the game.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
squidward_end_text | If I leave this dream, I'll just wake up and have to go to work. ARGH! |
squidward_reminder_text_2 | There's no time to waste. Get the spatula and then POOF, this dream will be over, thank Neptune. |
Mrs. Puff in Patrick's Dream
In the unused Patrick's Dream level, Mrs. Puff appears at the start but doesn't talk, as there is no taskbox linking her NPC to any of these text files.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
mrspuff_description_text | Mrs. Puff: Is this your idea of sundae school? Patrick: School? |
mrspuff_reminder_text | Get to the spatula at the end of this sundae-path, dream-thingy. You know what I mean, it's your dream. |
mrspuff_success_text | Mrs. Puff:Congratulations, you pass with flying colors.
Patrick: And sprinkles. |
mrspuff_failure_text | Failed again. Well, this course is pass, not pass. Try again. |
mrspuff_after_text | Can someone dream me up a spoon? Normal sized. |
mrspuff_sb_text | SpongeBob: Hello Mrs. Puff.
Mrs. Puff: Well, if it isn't my favorite student. |
Interestingly, the first line of dialogue in mrspuff_success_text is used in Sand Mountain when you beat Mrs. Puff's time.
Flying Dutchman's Graveyard
Early Dutchman Dialogue
The Flying Dutchman has some unfinished filler lines.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
dutchman_description_text | Robots have taken over my ship. |
dutchman_reminder_text_01 | Help me destroy the Robot Pirate Ship. |
dutchman_end_text | Well done, SpongeBob. |
dutchman_failure_text | Failure line |
dutchman_reminder_text_02 | Please hurry, SpongeBob. |
dutchman_success_text | You defeated the robots. Here's a Golden Spatula. |
Placeholder Cinematic
This is found in the files for the Flying Dutchman's Ship level (Destroy the Robot Ship).
Filename | Text |
---|---|
CINE_TEXT_TEMP | CINEMATIC!!! |
Bounce Pad Warp
Some early warp text found in the Flying Dutchman boss battle (gy04.HIP). In the final game, a wooden boat takes you back to the first level in the Flying Dutchman's Graveyard rather then a bounce pad.
Filename | Text |
---|---|
EXIT_GY10_TEXT | Bubble Bounce on the Bounce Pad to return to the Entrance Area |
Boss Battles
Filename | Text |

exit_hub_text | Congratulations, you beat the Robot Sandy Boss! Press the {i:button_exitlevel_text} button to go to Bikini Bottom |
exit_hub_text | Congratulations, you beat the Robot Patrick Boss! Press the {i:button_exitlevel_text} button to go to Bikini Bottom |
round_1_text | Round 1! |
round_2_text | Round 2! |
round_3_text | Round 3! |
It seems that this text would have come up at the end of each phase and after a boss was defeated. In the actual game, defeating any of these bosses takes you back to Bikini Bottom automatically. Strangely, no equivalent exists for Robot SpongeBob, not even in the unused phase of the boss fight.

Early names for certain missions and levels can be found in the files for the pause menu (mnu4.HIP). In addition to these, two areas - Mermalair and the SpongeBall Arena - are consistently referred to by different names throughout the game's internal files.
Miscellaneous Messages
Various miscellaneous development messages can be found in Battle for Bikini Bottom's start-up executable.
BusTicket StallKey Sundae
The names of every pickup in the game appear near the beginning of the executable. Some of these names are for pickups that ultimately go unused. The "Sundae" remains in the game's files as an unused object. Nothing else seems to remain of either the "Bus Ticket" or the "Stall Key" powerups.
SPONGEBOB:WHENROBOTSATTACK::RyanNeilDan
Perhaps the most interesting snippet of text is this one, which reveals that this game's original title was SpongeBob SquarePants: When Robots Attack. "RyanNeilDan" refers to three of the game programmers: Ryan A. Mapes, Neil Ka'apuni, and Dan Kollmorgen.
(With apologies to Jim Morrison) This the end, my only friend, The End
Some lyrics from "The End" by The Doors can be found in the start-up executable. Jim Morrison was The Doors' lead singer and songwriter.
Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights Leftovers
There is some text within Battle for Bikini Bottom's start-up executable that relates to Heavy Iron Studio's previous game, Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights', which was likely the basis for this game's engine.
The Mystery Machine On Edge in the Hedge! It's a Mean Greenhouse, Scooby! Chills & Spills on Haunted Hill! Scared Stiff at Skull Cliff! Misbehavin'? Cause a Cave In A Tight Spot for a Grave Plot! Fishy Clues for Scooby-Doo? Shiver Your Timbers, Scooby!
The game's executable contains all of the mission names from a previous Heavy Iron game, Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights.
Please insert the Scooby-Doo Game Disc.
A message asking the player to put Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights's disc back into the system.
Hidden Developer Messages
Every level in Battle for Bikini Bottom is accompanied by an .SDF file, which are most likely the original files used by the developers at Heavy Iron for whatever level editor tool they had. It contains the names of every asset used in the respective level. Occasionally, some of these assets have developer comments specifying what function they serve in-game.
