Differences between regions
Some clips translate to virually the same thing, but some have noticable changes. Should a "Note" section be made in the tables if this is the case, or should we leave it like that?
If someone finds a way to unpack the second game's .uax file, contact me on my talk page. --Ltr121312 (talk) 15:03, 24 March 2017 (EDT)
- Could you provide an example or two of how different those French clips are from the original? I think it would have to be a pretty drastic change to be considered notable.
- On a side note, if we're going start documenting the French dialogue (or any other language the game was translated into), I think they should be put on a separate subpage as opposed to having them crammed into the same tables as the English clips. The page as it is now is already pretty huge and has a large amount of English sound files alone, and it's still not even finished yet (and yeah, that's mainly my fault). - Sounds good. I noticed a few differences, like one english clip saying "it's a message from Hedwig" and the french version saying "It's a message from Hermione". I think too that another page should be more appropriate. Unused content is still unused content, right? If you could start a subpage I'll gladly upload my findings there.--Ltr121312 (talk) 22:37, 24 March 2017 (EDT)
- That change from Hedwig to Hermione is kind of interesting to me, as I'd say it makes more sense in context than the original English dialogue. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a major change in meaning from the original line, but it might be worth noting if other translations made the same change as well.
- I couldn't find any precedent on TCRF regarding how to include unused dialogue recorded in languages other than English or whatever the game's native language is. However, from what divingkataetheweirdo said here, it's possible that we could use these French clips if the article ever becomes marked for translation. In the meantime, I'll put the French clips uploaded so far in a new section here for now since personally I'd rather not see them deleted outright. Probably not the best solution, but it's the most sensible one I could come up with. Onoreo (talk) 22:59, 26 March 2017 (EDT)
- Since there are so many audio clips, we can do this one of two ways. We can either have separate sub-pages per language, or keep the languages together and split the characters into groups for separate subpages (Ex. main characters, secondary, etc). I'm more in favour of splitting the characters into groups since it seems like a good amount of the French lines match up with English ones. How the characters are grouped doesn't matter too much. -Ehm (talk) 23:10, 26 March 2017 (EDT)
- I'm kind of leaning towards splitting the characters into groups as well, but I'm not sure how best to go about incorporating other languages. Also, I don't know exactly how many languages the game's dialogue has been recorded in. From what I've seen on YouTube so far, some versions like the Korean, Polish and Chinese ones just have translated subtitles and kept the audio in English, but it looks like they made new recordings for the Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Finnish versions. If we're aiming to have as many languages as possible, I'm all for it, but we'd have to find a way to prevent this from potentially becoming a formatting nightmare.
- Of course, there's also the issue of whether or not we can actually get a hold of the audio files from all those other foreign versions, otherwise we don't know if they actually dubbed the unused lines. I tried finding the Japanese version online a while back to no avail. I think I tried finding the Russian version as well with no luck. Onoreo (talk) 02:33, 27 March 2017 (EDT)
- So do you want me to keep uploading the rest mof the french audio files or should I wait till we find a suitable solution to this mess? Since this is an old game, the files shouldn't take that much place on the website, but still... We should set a standard for this, since this game isn't the only one with unused translated voice clips I'm pretty sure. --Ltr121312 (talk) 09:44, 27 March 2017 (EDT)
