The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask/Unused Actors, Objects, & Variables

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

SOMETIMES I SEE A TEXT BOX AND I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSSDFGFFDHFGDJGGFSHGDFH
This page sucks.
If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome.
Specifically: Apparently, a lot of the things in here are actually used. We really need to have loads of help with this one.

Majora's Mask not only contains a variety of unused actors and objects, but some of the used actors and objects have unused variables.

Contents

Codes

Before You Begin

You can try loading these unused files yourself using the codes below. There are several rules to keep in mind:

  • Replace "oooo" with the object number.
  • Replace "aaaa" with the actor number.
  • Replace "vvvv" with the variable number.
  • Unless stated otherwise, assume the variable is 0000.
  • To load an actor that uses object 0002, you must be outdoors.
  • To load an actor that uses object 0003, you must be in a dungeon.
  • To load a new actor, you must exit and reenter the map.

The following two GameShark codes will also come in handy. Both are for Majora's Mask (U) 1.0.

Obj_Chikuwa

MM-A0114-O00ED.png
Actor Object
0114 00ED

This actor is linked to a used object, object_Obj_Lift, which contains the elevators in the basement of Dampé's House. Its filename, "chikuwa", means "bamboo ring", a word also used to describe a tube-shaped cake made of fish paste, perhaps owing to its shape. The Mario series features a similar object also referred to as "chikuwa", where they are known as Donut Lifts in English translations (another possible origin of the name, given the similar behavior).

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to be a long row of blocks that crumble, one after another, when Link approaches the chain. If approached fast enough, the player can walk on them.

En_Boj_01

MM-A00E7-O0001.png

Actor Object
0118 0001

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_boj, which contains Sakon, the peddler in green, the man on top of the lookout tower in Kakariko Village, the two laughing men, and the thin bearded man. Its filename translates to "B: Middle-Aged Guy - 01".

In this game, the functions associated to this actor are all empty, so when loaded in-game, it appears as nothing more than a Z-targetable blue spot.

En_Boj_04

Actor Object
0121 0001

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_boj, which contains Sakon, the peddler in green, the man on top of the lookout tower in Kakariko Village, the two laughing men, and the thin bearded man. Its filename translates to "B: Middle-Aged Guy - 04".

In this game, the functions associated to this actor are all empty, so when loaded in-game, it appears as nothing more than a Z-targetable blue spot.

En_Cne_01

Actor Object
0122 0001

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_cne, which contains a thin woman in a blue and yellow dress, and a thin woman in a blue dress, both of which appear in Hyrule Castle Town Market. Its filename translates to "C: Lady - 01".

Normally, when loaded in-game, only a blue Z-target spot appears. The actor will only work properly if she is paired with the correct object, object_cne (00DA), as seen in the video.

She is able to follow a path, and when the player tries to talk to her, it will attempt to display text ID 0x10B9, which has no text, and results in an empty box. She also has a dynamic shadow (which a few other actors in the game have, such as the signs Link can break).

Curiously, the player can also interact with her by giving her Magic Beans. She will substract one magic bean from the inventory, and then will talk to the player, also with text ID 0x10B9, which will just show an empty textbox.

En_Bba_01

Actor Object
0123 0001

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_bba, which contains the old woman in white and red who appears in Hyrule Castle Town Market. Its filename translates to "C: Old Lady - 01".

When loaded in-game, nothing appears. The actor will only work properly if she is paired with the correct object, object_bba (00DF), as seen in the video.

Much of her code is similar to that of another unused actor, En_Cne_01. En_Bba_01 also has a dynamic shadow, attemps to load text ID 0x10B9 when speaking, is able to follow a path, and she interacts with the player when giving her Magic Beans as well.

This actor was probably written with Ocarina of Time's object_bba's skeleton in mind, and so this actor has some visual bugs. For example, her right arm and bag follow the player instead of her head and torso.

Actor Object

This actor is linked to a used object, object_En_Zl4, which contains Skull Kid. Its filename is similar to the Ocarina of Time actor Demo_Sa, which is the cutscene actor for Saria. The filename translates to "Cutscene - Saria".

This actor is liable to crash the game. If it doesn't, it will load the Ocarina of Time Skull Kid, complete with a flute in his hand.

Obj_Shutter

Actor Object
0151 016D

This actor is linked to a used object called object_Obj_Toudai, which contains various Clock Town objects. It was originally used as a shutter that covered the bank window during closing hours. However, the bank never closes during normal gameplay.

The actor is loaded only in the ending cutscene setup of West Clock Town, where the Bomb Shop Owner is seen hugging his mother at the end of the game. Due to the camera angles of this cutscene, the bank is never viewable. However, even if one uses a Walk in Cutscenes code to explore the setup, it is necessary to load the actor 015A (En_Test4, the three-day timer) to the map to activate the flow of time, then wait until 8 PM.

Map Setup Room Setup ID Used Quantity
West Clock Town 01 00 Ending 01

This is because the bank was originally scheduled to open at 10 AM and close at 8 PM.

Though it is normally offscreen, running to Link's right reveals a cylindrical beam of colored light that slowly narrows and then disappears. The actor has several variables, which change the color of the beam.

En_Owl

This actor contains the owl.

0080

Actor Object Variable
00AF 00FD 0080

Variable 0080 is a version of the owl whose behavior calls to mind Kaepora Gaebora's famous query in Ocarina of Time:

"Would you like to hear what I said again?"

Originally, the owl would have initiated conversation (text ID 07D0), talked for a bit (07D1), then prompted the player to answer a yes or no question (07D2). If the player selected "Yes", he would have repeated his dialogue. If the player selected "No", he would have displayed a parting message (07D3) and flown off.

However, the messages once tied to this variable were overwritten with monkey dialogue, and the Yes/No option was deleted entirely. The video on the right shows the conversation taking place in-game, with the Yes/No option hacked back in.

Text ID Message Notes
07D0 You have strange powers, no?

Me been watching you!
Beginning of conversation.
07D1 Lately, this swamp, filled with
poison water.

Temple above waterfall strange...
Brother go to temple.

But brother no able to find temple
entrance. Temple for Deku only.

Brother captured by Deku. Now in
palace.
Continuation of conversation.
07D2 Help! This message replaced the owl's Yes/No question.
07D3 Was my brother all right? End of conversation.

The fact that these text IDs are unique to Majora's Mask suggests that this behaviour was intended for the owl's Terminan incarnation, and is not simply leftover code from Ocarina of Time. Additionally, the fact that the text IDs are positioned near other Southern Swamp-related messages suggests that there is where it would have been utilized.

The object for Child Zelda contains a silver flute. It is the same flute model used by Skull Kid in Ocarina of Time. It is found in the same position as the Ocarina of Time, which suggests that Zelda would have used a flute instead of an ocarina.

Indeed, her model even has unused animations for playing a flute, which are different from the animations she uses to play the Ocarina of Time. She plays the flute with her left hand, while she uses her right hand to play the ocarina. The relevant animation offsets can be found below:

  • 010334 - Zelda raises her hands to play the flute.
  • 0105c8 - Zelda finishes playing the flute.
  • 010d50 - Zelda plays the flute.

MM Link's Mask in Skull Kid.png

A mask bearing the features of Child Link can be found within Skull Kid's object. There are three copies, each rotated differently, for use in different scenarios. There are also three corresponding models of Majora's Mask, rotated in the same manner. This suggests that Skull Kid originally wore this mask.

A cracked wall decal can be found in two cutscenes of Romani Ranch: the one where Romani is abducted by the aliens and on setup 02 (unused cutscene). It appeared in a pre-release image.

This is a variation of the soft soil spread across many places in the game. The player can throw bugs to it, and they will get into the hole just like any other wall soft soil. However, they won't throw any item.
