DS Conference 2006

The screenshot on the DS Conference 2006[4] website and the video at the conference itself appear to be of the same version.

Level

  • The section in the screenshot doesn't appear in the final. The block and bush arrangement and the position relative to the mid-point suggest it was an early version of the section with the Vine-containing block.
  • The midway point is near the centre of the level, rather than near the end.

HUD

  • The Coin and Timer icons have slightly different appearances and are centred.
  • The Progress Bar marker for the Midway Point is a line, rather than a flag.
  • The player icon on the progress bar is higher up than the final.
  • The 'w' before the level number is a lower case, unlike the final game.
  • Various elements are placed and sized differently in this version.
  • The item storage only has one slot now.
  • The three empty circles appear to be the first sign of the Star Coins, or something like them.

These new screenshots first appear in a Famitsu issue from around this month[5] and seem to have been released to the general press later.[6]

Early Mockup Final
NSMB-prerelease-Feb 2006 press screenshot 5.jpg NSMB-prerelease-final comparison-mockup-3-B.png NSMB-prerelease-final comparison-3-B.png

Most resembles World 3-1. Compared to the final, the theme is desert, there are coins on top of the pipes (something that doesn't happen at all in the final level) and all the pipes are green. The background scrolling amount suggests that the placement of this section along the level is the same in this build and in the final.

This issue features the screenshots from the previously-released Famitsu, plus one not seen before. The new screenshot is probably from the same build.

Early Final
NSMB-prerelease-Feb 2006-Nintendo Dream-new screenshot.jpg NSMB-prerelease-final comparison-8-4.png

Most resembles World 8-4. World 8-4 has the dark land theme, whereas this has the jungle theme. Blocks, coins and terrain were rearranged. You can see the unused "junglekusa" actor from the final game in use here, with earlier graphics. Judging from the background scrolling distance, the equivalent objects are in the final level are not in the same location in the early level.

NSMB-Prerelease-E3 2006 Image 1.png

Level

  • The patch of mushrooms on the ground moved a block to the right in the final.

Visual

  • The Coin and Timer icons have slightly different appearances.
  • The Midway Point Flag has a stand, like in the sequals.
  • The player icon on the progress bar is higher up than the final.
  • The streak behind the lives HUD is a different shape.

Misc

  • Oddly, Mario has activated the midway flag, yet is behind its location.
  • The player also seems to have gained a massive 0 points from smashing up the level.
Early Final
NSMB-Prerelease-E3 2006 Image 2.png NSMB-E3K6 2-Final Equivilent.png

Levels

  • The first Toad House is green instead of red.

Visual

  • Lines connecting worlds are blue. Also, the lines that connect locked worlds are not dotted.
  • The Star Coin counter has a slightly difference appearence and is on the top-right.

Misc

  • Some points on the touchsceen's map overview are misplaced unlike final.
  • The Star Coin Signs were moved back and forth a bit, between the prerelease version and the final. The 2 boxes containing the map overview and the "World 1" text were moved up slightly for the final.

NSMB-Prerelease-E3 2006 Image 3.png

The boss icon is a skull that is unused in the final.

NSMB-Prerelease-E3 2006 Image 4.png

Gameplay Screen: The mushroom platform is longer and has some Coins and three Goombas.

Information Screen: The Star Coin graphics on the bottom screen has black eyes.

There is a Fire Bubble here unlike the final.

NSMB-Prerelease-E3 2006 Image 6.png

NSMB-Prerelease-E3 2006 Image 8.png

The singleplayer mode button is labelled 'Mario' instead of xx and parts of the logo and copyright text have an ugly-looking light green border.

Trailer

todo:

  • https://chupnet.com/E3/2006/E306Part11.avi (press conference)
    • trailer is higher res + has sfx
    • ds b-roll (which can be found elsewhere I think) has a nsmb clip
  • official nintendo magazine july 2006 dvd has a higher/different qualty version of the trailer compared to the online/cd press kit version - but still bad quality

Looks final, but I haven't checked carefully. Nintendo's Japanese E3 2006 website DS page says screens and video show games in-development, but that might not be accurate for all the screens/videos.

USA Manual

Hmmm...
To do:
Get a better scan. Also, there are more pre-release screens in the manual (even if its just HUD differences), inc. in the PDF version. Check other regions too.

NSMB-prerelease-usa manual-page 12-prerelease screenshot.png

The USA manual contains a pre-final screenshot used in explanation of the map screen on page 12. It shows an early bottom screen for the World 1 map. It doesn't correspond to the top screen screenshot on the same page. The manuals for the other regions and the PDF versions of the manual available on the official Nintendo websites were corrected [todo: add link].

Nsmb-Prerelease unuseddesert.jpg

This screen shows Unused Level 5 in a later form. This shows that the level was removed after the desert tileset was changed to the final. Also notable is the Spiny, which uses the wrong sprite-set in the final.

NSMB-prerelease Ghosthouse.jpg

A nearly finished Ghost House level. The candle flame in the background is missing, and the "?" Block is a darker yellow instead of gray.

NSMB-prerelease Pipedesert.jpg

An early version of 3-B, with only green pipes, and with a desert background. This could mean that World 2 was going to have another extra level [or a desert bonus in another world]

Nintendo Dream (gamekyo filename 427)

What's grass doing here?

This screen shows that 2-4 was once an oasis like 2-2, or at least they marked it like that on the map.

This correlates with the existence of a screenshot showing the same block arrangements that appear in this level, in a grassland level.

The level does not have any desert-specific elements, other than the swelling ground - which supports the theory that this level may have existed with another theme/in another world.
