An ugly grey box with oversized cassette-like cartridges, the Nintendo Entertainment System was specifically designed not to look like a video game console, to the point of advertising the included toy robot peripheral that only (barely) worked with two games more heavily than the system itself, in a desperate attempt to revive the US video game market which Atari had nearly killed in 1983. Fortunately, it worked.
Known as the Family Computer (or Famicom for short) in Japan, where it did look very much like a video game console.
