After the deal with Sony about producing a CD-ROM extension for the SNES fell through, Nintendo attempted to create its own extension for the Nintendo 64 utilizing magnetic discs. Dubbed the Nintendo 64DD, many sought-after games were announced for this console: Earthbound 64, Ura Zelda, Fire Emblem 64, and Super Mario 64, as well as many others.

However, long delays that pushed the release date all the way to 1999 and a very limited availability once it was released pretty much set the console's future as a commercial failure.
