The game that didn't start it all, but it might as well have.

Unused Quit Messages

Several of the quit-messages were commented out in the source code. I WONDER WHY.

“Don't quit now! We're still spending your money!”
“Fuck you, pussy! Get the fuck out!”
“Hey, Ron! Can we say 'fuck' in the game?”
“I'd leave: this is just more monsters and levels. What a load.”
“If you leave, I'll make the lord drink my jizz.”
“Suck it down, asshole! You're a fucking wimp!”
“You quit and I'll jizz in your cystholes!”

Either these are in-jokes at the expense of GT Interactive legal, or they were just Romero being Romero. Probably both.

Automap Asteroids

There is some references in the source code release for a easter egg that'd turn the automap into a game of Asteroids. The code was later found by John Romero, but as it turns out, very little of the egg was actually completed - just some data structures and basic collision detection. Oh well.

Examine all the awesome unused stuff in the released alphas and betas. Vast amounts of info at this website run by a creepy guy with a hate-on for Microsoft
