Grand Theft Auto 2 is the sequel to the first game. Taking place in one city instead of three and adding new features, it's also the only game in the Grand Theft Auto series to not use a roman numeral to represent what game in the series it is.

Debug Mode

Debug mode can be enabled by editing the Registry, by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DMA Design Ltd\GTA2\Debug and adding a string do_debug_keys with a value of 1.

Keys in debug mode:

  • 1 – +1 respect for the first gang
  • 2 – +1 respect for the second gang
  • 3 – +1 respect for the third gang
  • 4 – +1 wanted level
  • 5 – erases wanted level
  • C – shows coordinates

Using the numpad, the player can move the view or teleport himself:

  • 7 – zoom out
  • 9 – zoom in
  • 8 – up
  • 4 – left
  • 6 – right
  • 2 – down
  • 0 – teleport
  • 5 – center on the player
  • . – 100% health

Other registry strings

By adding these registry strings in the aforementioned path, it is possible to remove certain vehicles from the game:

  • skip_fire_engines
  • skip_busses
  • skip_trains
  • skip_ambulance
  • skip_police

Unused Objects

Objects to be put on a map, some similar to the original Grand Theft Auto. Many are found within the game files and are fully functional, but for some reason are not included anywhere in the game.

BENCH

Gta2 bench.png

Bench, may be hit by a car.

BIN

Gta2 bin.png

Garbage bin.

BLASTER

Gta2 blaster.png

Ghetto blaster, makes a constant sound.

BLOOD

Blood, taken from GTA1.

BOXES

Gta2 boxes.png

Boxes, similar to the ones form GTA1. Destroyed when the player walks or drives over them.

CRATE

Gta2 crate.png

Crate, like the boxes, destroyed when the player walks or drives over them.

FOOTY

Gta2 footy.png

Football / soccerball, can be kicked around by both the player and AI-controlled pedestrians and cars.

HYDRANT

Gta2 hydrant.png

A fire hydrant. Cannot be destroyed.

NEWSDIS

Gta2 newsdis.png

A newstand, movable.

OILDRUM

Gta2 oildrum.png

A movable oil barrel.

RUBBISH

Gta2 rubbish.png

As the name implies. Can be destroyed.

TYRE

Gta2 tyre.png

A tyre, movable.

Unused Weapons

Electrobaton

Gta2 electrobaton.png

A half-working weapon known as the "electrobaton" can be found in the game. How it works is: first, a bullet is shot. If it hits a pedestrian, an electric current is created between the weapon and the target but the targeted person never dies. When used against human players, the electrobaton causes them to slow down and continue walking even when the player stops holding any buttons. Using it against cars has no effect (i. e. only bullets are shot, without electricity). The electrobaton makes no sound, unlike the constant buzzing noise of Electrogun.

Instant Vehicle Bomb

Gta2 instant vehicle bomb.png

Similar to the regular Vehicle Bomb, except it explodes immediately after triggering, leaving no time to escape from the car. Perhaps meant for a suicide mission of some sort.

Tanker

Gta2 tanker.png

This unused vehicle that can be attached to a Truck Cab, similar to Transporters and Containers.

Unused Graphics

Cop's dialogue face

Gta2 cop face.png

A policeman's face, possibly would have been used for dialogue. In-game, dialogue parts spoken by cops are rare and use the generic "neutral character" face.

Textures

Gta2 unused textures.png The graphic files contain a couple of tile textures with a white "X" drawn over them.

Palette swaps

Gta2 green cop car.png
Gta2 green swat van.png

Light green versions of the Cop Car and SWAT Van, as opposed to the light blue ones always found in the final version.

Unused Text

The following can be found in the ".gxt" text files.

Area names

m33 Romanova
m35 Azimuth
m36 Barking
m41 Kyabetsu

Statistics

bnk_job BANK JOBS
bus_hi BUSES HIJACKED
trn_hi TRAINS HIJACKED

These would be probably displayed among other statistics shown when the player quits. Hijacking trains is not even possible in the game, though it was in Grand Theft Auto.

GTA2 PLAYABLE PREVIEW

WHAT AM I?
A tough guy - a hardened criminal back in The Big City after a long spell away.

WHERE AM I?
In The Big City's Downtown District comprising four distinct territories - three of them
in the iron grip of rival gangs.

Gangs are readily identifiable by their unique colours, the vehicles they drive and the
prevalence of their emblems in their particular areas.

For more information about the gangs and the Downtown District itself answer the first
payphone you see and take part in the simple tutorial.

WHAT AM I DOING?
In this particular slice of GTA2 heaven? Whatever you can manage to fit into six minutes.
(Plastic explosives have been planted in your guts to ensure that you don't get too carried
away beyond the time limit imposed in this special preview release.)

Cash is the key to opening up The Big City. There's a price tag attached to pretty much
everything (particularly criminal pursuits such as theft and murder) but the best way to
earn a dishonest crust is to take on one of the jobs available only from the gangs.

HOW DO I DO IT?
Run, jump, punch, shoot, steal, race, chase, crush, crash, smash... Get a life. Take a
life. Live a little. Earn some respect from one of the gangs and see where that takes you.
Take on the hard-boiled Law Enforcement and see where that gets you...

For reference, the default keyboard controls are as follows...

Up Arrow	MOVE FORWARDS
Down Arrow	MOVE BACKWARDS
Left Arrow	TURN LEFT
Right Arrow	TURN RIGHT
Left Ctrl	ATTACK (USE WEAPON)
Enter ENTER/EXIT VEHICLE
Spacebar	HANDBRAKE/JUMP
Z PREVIOUS WEAPON
X NEXT WEAPON
Tab SPECIAL

WHAT'S MISSING?
Plenty. Here are some of the features only available in the full-blown release...

- Extra WEAPONS including Grenades, ElectroGun, Vehicle Machine Guns, Vehicle Mines,
  Vehicle Flame Cannons...
- Extra LAW ENFORCEMENT including soulless Special Agents and The Army.
- Extra VEHICLES (and appropriate special features) including Remote-Control Cars,
Karma Buses, Garbage Trucks, Hot Dog Vans, Armoured Personnel Carriers, Land Roamers, Tanks...
- Extra DISTRICTS featuring distinctive locations including Trailer Park, Prison,
Shopping Mall, Vedic Temple, Construction Yard, Power Station, Mad Island...
- Extra GANGS including rowdy Rednecks, scheming Scientists, and a rough-edged Russian Mafia...
- Extra JOBS - dozens of them to perform for the feuding gangs.
- A selection of extra special Bonus Stages.
- The opportunity to get together your own gangs and cruise the city in search of trouble.
- A selection of multiplayer games including Tag, Frag and Score scenarios.
- A dozen active Radio Stations city featuring exclusive DJs and advertising and playing
over two dozen original pop tracks PLUS exclusive tracks from Flytronix.
- Bonus GTA2 video.

WHEN CAN I GET MY HANDS ON THIS FULL-BLOWN RELEASE?
Friday 22 October 1999 - from all leading retail outlets.

Known Video Card Problems -

ATI Rage Pro
------------
- make sure that "Special Recognition" is selected on the video tab in GTA2 Manager

Permedia 2
----------
- make sure that "Special Recognition" is selected on the video tab in GTA2 Manager

NVidia Riva 128
---------------

With this chipset, on-screen sprites can be displayed incorrectly in GTA2. To solve this :
- make sure that "Special Recognition" is selected on the video tab in GTA2 Manager
- go to the Riva 128 tab on your display properties (get this by right-clicking on your Windows desktop).
- select "More Direct3D"
- change "Non-Filtered Texel Origin" to be "Center(x=texel/2,y=texel/2)" not "Upper left corner(x=0,y=0)".
