Early/Scrapped Names

In the game's files, certain locations, radio stations and vehicles are internally named/referenced differently to what appears in-game.


Locations

In .gxt text files, the Beechwood City area of Broker is called Grayfords.


Radio Stations

In audio file names, the following different titles can be found:

Tuff Gong Radio is listed as Babylon.

The Beat 102.7 is listed as Beat 95.


Vehicles

The handling.dat text file and some audio files refer to the Freeway as Bobber.

The 3D model file for the Contender is named as E109.

In .gxt text files, Roman's Taxi is referred to as Albany.

Unused Textures

There are plenty of unused textures hidden in the game's files.


Boat Map Icon

GTA4Broating.png An unused map icon representing a boat. Its file name is radar_boattour, suggesting that a boat tour service was once available in the game.


Well Stacked Pizza Company

File:GTA4Djesj.png An unused texture of a Well Stacked Pizza Company pizza box. In-game, the only traces of this shop are some of the workers, who work for another pizza shop called Pizza This.


Phone Place-holders

Four unused place-holder images can be found in the phone's .wtd files.


Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Found at the pc\textures directory, in the vehicle.wtd file, are 19 leftover texture files from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

These consist of various vehicle textures, such as license plates, lights, steering wheels, tires and police livery.

The aforementioned files being present adds credibility to suggest that Grand Theft Auto IV was literally developed directly from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

It's not clear why these specific files are leftover, as opposed to any other files being leftover. However, it's feasible to suggest that they were perhaps used as filler material to test the R.A.G.E. system early on during Grand Theft Auto IV's development.


Cut Visual Effects?

Found at the pc\textures directory is a visualeffects.wtd file, 55 bytes in size. It appears to be an empty, unused texture(s) file which contains no data that could be used in-game. Furthermore, opening the file using a text editor reveals nothing more than a short line of nondescript text.

Scrapped Weapons

There are some leftovers from weapons that didn't quite survive the development process.


Silenced 9mm Pistol

A sound file named SILENCED_PISTOL_SHOT2 and a texture called decal_9mm are present in the game files.


Handheld Minigun

Some sound effects for a handheld minigun are present in resident.rpf, and there's a spot for it in WeaponInfo.xml.


Flamethrower

An entry for a flamethrower exists in WeaponInfo.xml, but only the title "FTHROWER" remains, with no extra data to make it playable.


Pool Cue

The pool cue from the pool mini-game is categorized as a weapon, but the ability to use it as a weapon under normal circumstances is no longer present.


However, a shorter, broken pool cue was later made available as a usable melee weapon in The Lost and Damned.


Furthermore, via modifications, the pool cue in Grand Theft Auto IV can in fact be used as a melee weapon.

It has all the data available to be used as a weapon, but it is simply not obtainable as such under normal circumstances.

When the pool cue is selected, it functions much like the baseball bat melee weapon in terms of attack animations. Internally, the pool cue does have a corresponding HUD icon, although it is not seen in-game when the item is equipped. The unused HUD icon is very basic (Possibly a simple styled place-holder.), and is inconsistent with the style of all the used HUD icons. This could indicate that the ability to use the pool cue as a weapon was scrapped somewhat early on in development.

Nightstick

There are references to the nightstick in common/data/default.ide

Niko Customization

Fingerless Gloves

Strangely enough, while these gloves were featured prominently in promotional artwork and screenshots of Niko Bellic, they can never be found in-game. They're present in the game data, though, and can be applied via mods.


Haircuts

There are two scrapped haircut designs in the game: one designed to resemble helmet-hair, and a buzz cut. Like the gloves, these still exist in the data and can be modded in.

The American.gxt file lists 4 additional songs intended for Liberty Rock Radio, Radio Broker and The Vibe. It's possible that Rockstar wasn't able to obtain permission to use these songs.

The Vibe 98.8

Me & U was possibly cut because it appeared in the KRhyme station of Saints Row 2, which released in the same year. A song from that station (Amerie - 1 Thing) conversely appeared in Grand Theft Auto V on the Non-Stop-Pop FM station. Cursory examination of the american.gxt file in that game reveals that Me & U was again considered for inclusion but was ultimately cut.

Some minor details of scrapped missions remain in the game's files.


I and High

Its text entry is M_21. It is assumed Little Jacob would have given you the mission, but no data remains.


American Dream

Its text entry is M_8. Only text remains, but it is assumed Roman would have given you this mission.

Scrapped Vehicles

There are also some remains of scrapped vehicles. While some merely have handling strings, others are completely finished and drivable!


Andromada

This plane from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was cut in early development. Only its handling data (common\data\handling.dat>planes>ANDROM) remains.

Buffalo

Another Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas refugee. According to the audio files, the Buffalo was cut from the base game. It was eventually finished and added in The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Caddy

According to the audio files, the Caddy was planned for the base game. Again, it was added in The Ballad of Gay Tony.


Dodo

An old favorite from Grand Theft Auto III. Sadly, it was cut and only the handling data (common\data\handling.dat>planes>DODO) remains.

Fighter

All that remains is its handling data. Possibly, it was some type of military aircraft.


Majestic

Yet another car from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Only a few audio files remain. It is possible that this was the beta name for Faction, a car based on the same model as Majestic.

Previon

Another Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas car? I'm noticing a trend here... Only audio files (pc\audio\Sfx\POLICE_SCANNER.rpf\MODEL\MOD_PREVION) remain.

Choppers

The Angel, Daemon, Diabolus, Hexer, Lycan, Nightblade, Revenant and Wolfsbane chopper bikes all have their models and textures present in the base game, despite not being finished until The Lost and Damned. They can be used as normal bikes with a little modding.

Scrapped Vehicle Components

Alternate Packer Ramp

A different, unused ramp component for the Packer vehicle exists, and can be spawned in-game using modifications. Unlike the other ramp which is seen in-game, this ramp extends lower down and is attached to the rear of the vehicle, as opposed to on top of it.


Despite it looking visually normal, the collision detection for the ramp does not match its physical appearance. The solid parts of the ramp object are significantly higher up than the object itself. The gap in-between both ramp planks is also erroneously solid. Because of the wrongly raised collision detection, when driving the vehicle with this component attached, the underside of the physical ramp object does not collide with elements such as bumpy terrain. (Uneven roads, sand, grass verges, and so on.)


Due to the collision detection oddities, it is quite difficult to drive other vehicles up the ramp. The fact that the collision detection is not in line properly with the object, and is solid in the ramp plank gaps, may suggest that this component's usage was scrapped somewhat early on in development.

Unused Store

The image of the Binco store found in the game files

There is a texture for a billboard of what appears to be the Binco store from past GTA games in the game's files. The area depicted in it is the Russian clothing store in the final game.

Unfinished Weather

In common\data\Ambient.dat, there is a bit known as >IsSnowing. This could mean snow was a weather condition, but it's now only seen as an unused scenario for pedestrian behavior.

A Plank!

A plank can be found within the game's files, and would have been carried by dock workers at East Hook. While unused now, workers can be seen holding the plank in the first trailer.


PS3 Controller Icons

The PC version of this game contains the file buttons_ps3.wtd, which is located in \pc\textures. The folder contains textures for every key and button, including the Sixaxis tutorial icons for the PlayStation 3 controller, which is not supported in either the PC or Xbox 360 versions. This is probably just a leftover from porting the game from the consoles to PC.

Anti-Piracy

When a pirated copy is detected, the player loses control of a hijacked car after a while and the camera continuously swerves around as if the player was drunk.
