Hmmm...
To do:
There is some unused content exclusive to the Pocket Edition . There are more version differences with the Xbox 360 Edition, Pocket Edition and Pi Edition.

Minecraft is a brilliant indie survival-sandbox thing.

Splash text error checking

I'll give you three guesses as to what the reference is, and the first two don't count.

If Minecraft detects that splashes.txt is missing (the file containing the randomly-selected yellow text that is displayed on the title screen), it will use "missingno" as the splash text instead.

Sponge

The sponge block from Classic is still present in the game, although it has no use and cannot be crafted or obtained through regular means.

It can be hacked into one's inventory, given to a player under SMP using /give or obtained semi-legitimately in the Creative mode (introduced in Beta 1.8), however it no longer works, instead behaving like a standard block. Its progamming for detecting water around it still remains in the game, however the programming for actually removing the water doesn't exist anymore.

Giant

If you hack a monster spawner to spawn giants, you'll realize that the model's gigantic size won't even fit inside the spawner.

A huge Zombie that has a ton of health and deals a ton of damage. Giants were added in the last version of Survival Test but haven't been used since. They can still be spawned through hacks, however.

deadmau5 camera

While technically used, but only under special circumstances, there is a special set of camera debugging options enabled in versions 1.9pre5 and 12w08a that were only intended for use at deadmau5 concerts. In versions after 1.9pre5 and 12w08a, these options are disabled by default, but can be enabled by using a mod to reactivate the features. In the code, these features are referred to as "debugCam".

Controls

F5 causes the camera to go into a free-look mode.
F9 freezes the camera in place. Pressing any two functionally connected keys (except U and O) at the same time unfreezes the camera.
I, J, K and L all rotate the camera up, left, down and right respectively.
U and O move the camera forwards and backwards.
Y and H change the field of view. Pressing these keys at the same time resets the FOV.
N and M change the camera's tilt. B resets the tilt.

Unused Potions

These potions all exist in the game, but cannot be brewed or obtained legitimately. All of them act like base potions in that their appearance is a bottle of water and they have no effect when drunk. They can be obtained by modifying a potion's damage value with an inventory editor, or with the /give command on servers.

Damage value Name
6, 7 Clear Potion
11 Diffuse Potion
13 Artless Potion
14, 15 Thin Potion
22, 23 Bungling Potion
27 Smooth Potion
29 Suave Potion
30, 31 Debonair Potion
38, 39 Charming Potion
43 Refined Potion
45 Cordial Potion
46, 47 Sparkling Potion
48 Potent Potion
54, 55 Rank Potion
59 Acrid Potion
61 Gross Potion
62, 63 Stinky Potion

Unused Potion Effects

There are many potion effects in Minecraft, and over half of them don't correspond to any existing potion or item. Some of them don't even have their effects properly implemented! However, all of them have have the names of their corresponding potions defined in the language files.

It's a spoon. Mining Fatigue - The opposite of the Haste effect: decreases the player's block-breaking speed. Most likely would have been brewed by corrupting a Haste potion with a fermented spider eye.

I haz teh gillz, like teh fishes! Water Breathing - Exactly what it sounds like: causes the player's air meter to never deplete while underwater. May have been unimplemented because there already is a water-breathing enchantment for armor.

Unused Sounds

File Name Sound Notes
old_explode.ogg
The pre-1.0.0 explosion sound.
There are two versions of this file.
drr.ogg
DRR...DRR...DRR... Actually,
it's the old arrow hit sound.
hurt.ogg
Another leftover from an older
version! This time it's the hurt sound.
breath.ogg
Weird, mechanical-sounding breathing.
It's quite horrifying. Note that the Blaze enemy uses
a different sounding breathing noise.
affectionate scream.ogg
Unused voice clip for the Ghast enemy.

Unused graphics

Purple Arrow

You'd think they'd be poisonous arrows, but...

Bundled with the standard arrow graphics are these odd purple arrows. These are actually a leftover from Survival Test, where the Skeleton's arrows were purple. In all subsequent versions, Skeleton arrows use the same graphics as the player's arrows.

Quiver

These are for pansies. Real men carry deadly-sharp arrows in their pockets.

This was actually used in early Indev, but is no longer in use. As long as you can carry arrows without a quiver, it wouldn't be very useful.

Ruby

Why is this still in here?

The original ruby texture. Rubies were going to serve the exact purpose that emeralds do now.

Gray Enderdragon

With scales.
Without scales.

The preliminary textures for the Enderdragon boss, seen in older screenshots. The used file is ender.png. The only difference between dragon.png and body.png is that the latter lacks the scales.

Steve the Testificate

It only looks good here. Trust me.

The default player skin remapped to fit the Villager model, presumably as a template. Actually loading it in-game produces a less than desirable appearance. Note that this texture is separate from the actual villager textures, which are in their own subfolder.

Pigman

They must have been killed off by those Testificates.

A variation of the Zombie Pigman that...isn't a zombie. It's been in the game for a while now, but still isn't used.

Basic Villager

A green-robed villager skin. Although this is probably supposed to be used, it isn't. The standard villagers use the farmer.png skin instead.

Footprint

I imagine this wouldn't look good on stone.

A weird little square thing. The file name says it all.

Unused Map Icons

"X" marks the spot!

Some extra icons for the map item. The white arrow in the top left corner is the only one used normally, though the colored arrows are used for multiplayer in the Xbox 360 version. Note that only the white and the green icons are used.

Snow Golem's true face

The snow golem mob has this goofy face as the front texture for its head. Since the snow golem's head is always obscured by a pumpkin, the face is never seen without mods.

Zombie Pigman

He has a face!

The zombie pigman has a full zombie face which is unseen during normal gameplay, the other part of the face is overwritten by the pig texture. The image also contains the words "THX XAPHOBIA". This is credit to the original creator of the zombie pigman skin.

Zombie Villager

I'm a zombie, you know!

The zombie villager has all of the zombie textures which are unused due to the game using zombie.png for zombies.

Blue Square

What the hey is this!?

A blue square used to mark where the Nether portal texture is to be rendered by the game.

Placeholder Fire Texture

I have a hard time believing this is the fire texture.

Placeholder graphics for the fire texture, which is overwritten in VRAM with the true fire texture. Text reads "FIRE TEX! HNST", which means "Fire texture! Honest!".

Old Lava Texture

Remember me?

The old lava texture from Alpha.

Village Border

MinecraftPuddle.png

A texture previously used by Mojang to mark the borders of villages, as seen at PAX.

Duplicate Cake

Obvious Portal reference avoided.

While this cake graphic is technically used, this duplicate in terrain.png isn't.

Snow

MinecraftSnow.png

Unknown, though it could be related to the snow weather effect.

Skis

SkiFree: Minecraft Edition

A texture for skis was added in 1.4.6 by Dinnerbone as a red herring.

Windowless Door

It's an iDoor; it has no Windows!

A windowless door can be found with the rest of the game's graphics. It's unclear where this would have been used, unless Mojang wanted to add windowless doors to the game.

SEL and UN SEL

MinecraftSELUNSEL.png

Squares labeled "SEL" and "UN SEL" can be found in allitems.png. Purpose unknown.

Unused Text

Minecraft Multiplayer is currently not finished, but there is some buggy early testing going on.

A remnant from an early version of SMP. Not used anywhere.

%1$s was pummeled by %2$s

Supposed to be used when a player is killed by a snowball, egg, or Ender pearl, but is unused because these items do not cause any damage when thrown.

tile.oreRuby.name=Ruby Ore

Unused text for the Ruby Ore.

item.ruby.name=Ruby

Unused text for the Ruby.

Oddities

Minceraft?

Minecraft-minceraft.png

Very rarely (about one out of every 10,000 startups), the Minecraft logo is rearranged to read "Minceraft" instead of the usual "Minecraft".

Version Differences

Pocket Edition

MinecraftPocketCyanFlower.png

The rose flower is replaced by a cyan flower in the pocket edition. They aren't planned on being brought into other editions at the moment. There's also a camera item here, but you can only obtain it through inventory hacking. Even then, the tripod texture was removed in version 0.2 and replaced by the red music disc texture.

Minecraft Pocket Reactor Block.png

The Nether Reactor block and Glowing Obsidian are special to the pocket edition. Nether Reactor blocks can be used in nether reactors to spawn nether spires, that are sort of like mini chunks of the Nether in the normal dimension. This replaces the Nether Portal and the Nether itself.

Minecraft Pocket Glowing Obsidian.png

Glowing Obsidian is obsidian basically generated when the nether core reactor is activated. It glows faintly like Glowstone but has the same properties as regular obsidian (high blast resistance, requires diamond pickaxe to mine, etc.)

To craft stone bricks and such, you can use a Stone Cutter, also exclusive to pocket edition. It's just like a crafting bench but for stone recipes. That's about it.
