Minecraft is a brilliant indie survival-sandbox thing created by Markus Persson, also known as Notch. If you haven't heard of it, you should really get your ears checked.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Add all of the unused content from the 1.8 snapshots and earlier versions of the game.
  • There are some more version differences with the Xbox 360 Edition and PC Gamer Demo. Are Minecraft 2.0 and Minecraft 4k worth documenting?
  • Document the massive amount of revisional differences this game has.
  • Document the massive amount from here.
  • Certain parts of this page (and its subpages) need rewriting and reorganizing.

Splash Text Error Checking

I'll give you three guesses as to what the reference is, and the first two don't count.

If the game detects that splashes.txt (the file containing the randomly-selected yellow text that is displayed on the title screen) is missing or empty, it will use "missingno" as the splash text instead, a reference to a rather infamous glitch.

Removed Unused Content

Quiver

The quiver is an item only aquireable by minecraft alpha however was removed in beta and will be added back in 1.9

Locked Chest/Steve Co. Supply Crate

Minecraft-LockedChest13w18b.png

The Beta 1.4 update introduced "Steve Co. Supply Crates" that would be created in newly-generated chunks. It was a silly little April Fools' Day prank and a silly little Team Fortress 2 reference! The chests were removed in the 1.4_01 patch, but can still be placed using inventory hacks or with the command "/give USERNAME 95".

In snapshots 13w37a-13w39b use "/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:chest_locked_aprilfools_super_old_legacy_we_should_not_even_have_this" instead. Locked chests were completely removed in snapshot 13w41a and replaced with stained glass.

At the time, the chests were indestructible. After Minecraft was updated to Beta 1.4_01, the locked chest block was able to be destroyed in one hit, and if left untouched would decay over time similarly to leaf blocks. Additionally, it generated light equivalent to a Glowstone block.

Unsurprisingly, when the storage chests were updated to use smaller, animated models in Beta 1.8, the locked chests were not changed.

Their textures were reverted to the blank purple texture in snapshot 12w21a, replaced with the Block of Emerald texture in snapshot 12w22a, replaced again with the Block of Redstone texture in 13w01a, replaced once again in 13w03a with a texture that reads "missing texture", and finally to this texture that parodies the texture used in games based on the Source engine (such as Team Fortress 2) when a texture is missing.

As of 1.7, the Locked Chest has been removed and its data value used for 16 colors of stained glass.

Sky Dimension

Minecraft-Sky Dimension.png

Notch was planning to add a Sky Dimension for the Beta 1.8 update, which you had a chance of going to when you fell asleep. This feature was never implemented, but in Betas 1.6 and 1.7, there is data in the code for this dimension. With the use of mods, it is possible to access this dimension. In 1.0 it was replaced with the End.

Unused Green Villager

A green-robed villager skin. Although this is probably supposed to be used, it isn't. The standard villagers use the farmer.png skin instead. From 13w36a to 14w02b it can be spawned with the command "/summon Villager ~ ~ ~ {Profession:5}". This was changed to "/summon Villager ~ ~ ~ {Profession:-1}" in 14w02c, due to green-robed villagers causing crashes when trading. Aside from their skin, they were completely removed in 14w20a.

Unused Human Mob

The Human mob, later disabled.

Before the Adventure Update, there was a partially disabled mob that was used to test damage and AI, named "Human" (Later renamed to "Monster") but was never completely removed. It ran slightly faster than the Zombie, and was slightly taller than the Player. It uses the default Player character skin, but has its own file.

Unused Dirt Slab

To the left are the slabs, to right are some weird-looking grass/slab things.

In early versions of Minecraft, Notch tried out dirt slabs, so they would be a half-block lower than grass and make the world feel more "smooth." However, this caused errors with dirt spawning in places like underground, leaving odd gaps.

Lectern

What's that wooden speck in the background?

This would have worked just the way you would imagine, a stand for reading books. Dinnerbone worked hard on it, and got far into it, until he encountered numerous bugs and decided to scrap it. In 2013, on his Reddit AMA, he was asked if he would revisit it, and he replied he tried, but it was still buggy, and "didn't feel right".

Debug World

Minecraft-DebugWorld-Preview.png

If you hold shift while selecting a world type in versions 1.8 and up, you can access a hidden world type called Debug mode. This was introduced in snapshot 14w26a. This mode shows all blocks in existence. If you manage to get into Creative in this mode, if you try to break anything, it will instantly respawn.

Unused Mobs

Mob Information Picture Texture
Giant A huge Zombie that has a ton of health and deals a ton of damage. They only can be hurt by getting hit in the legs. Giants were added in the last version of Survival Test but haven't been used since. They can still be spawned through hacks, however. Additionally, they can be spawned using the command "/summon Giant" in 1.7.
If you hack a monster spawner to spawn giants, you'll realize that the model's gigantic size won't even fit inside the spawner.
Skeleton Horse An unused skeletal horse can be found in Minecraft 1.6. It can be spawned using third-party programs or the command "/summon EntityHorse ~0 ~0 ~0 {Type:4}" and isn't hostile. It can't be tamed or saddled unless summoned as such. 100px Bones and Bones!
Zombie Horse Another unused horse in 1.6, this time it's undead. Like the skeleton horse, it can be spawned using third-party programs or the command "/summon EntityHorse ~0 ~0 ~0 {Type:3}" and isn't hostile. Oddly enough, both this and the Skeleton horse have sound effects associated with them. Like the skeleton horse, it can only be saddled or tamed via the summon command. 100px Exactly how a horse could be a zombie while still being a horse, I don't know.
Wither Jockey If a Spider is spawned in the Nether, there is a very rare chance that it will spawn with a Wither Skeleton riding it. This behavior is unused, however, because Spiders don't spawn in the Nether. It can be obtained via summon commands or (rarely) by using a spider spawn egg in the nether.

deadmau5 Camera

While technically used, but only under special circumstances, there is a special set of camera debugging options enabled in versions 1.9pre5 and 12w08a that were only intended for use at deadmau5 concerts. In versions after 1.9pre5 and 12w08a, these options are disabled by default, but can be enabled by using a mod to reactivate the features. In the code, these features are referred to as "debugCam".

Controls

F5 causes the camera to go into a free-look mode.

  • F9 freezes the camera in place. Pressing any two functionally connected keys (except U and O) at the same time unfreezes the camera.
  • I, J, K, and L all rotate the camera up, left, down, and right respectively.
  • U and O move the camera forwards and backwards.
  • Y and H change the field of view. Pressing these keys at the same time resets the FOV.
  • N and M change the camera's tilt. B resets the tilt.

Unused Potions

These potions all exist in-game, but cannot be brewed or obtained legitimately. All of them act like base potions in that their appearance is a bottle of water and they have no effect when drunk. They can be obtained by modifying a potion's damage value with an inventory editor, or with the /give command on servers.

Damage value Name
6, 7 Clear Potion
11 Diffuse Potion
13 Artless Potion
14, 15 Thin Potion

Unused Potion Effects

There are many potion effects in Minecraft, and over half of them don't correspond to any existing potion or item. Some of them don't even have their effects properly implemented! However, all of them have have the names of their corresponding potions defined in the language files. As of Minecraft 1.5, they can be obtained with the /effect command, using the appropriate effect IDs.

Blue-eyed white cats are more probably blind? Blindness (ID: 15) - A thick black fog is created around the player, and (s)he cannot sprint or perform critical hits. Also, in most computers, combined with Night Vision the screen will be pitch black.

Minecraft-HealthBoostIcon.png Health Boost (ID: 21) - Adds one heart to the health bar. It was later replaced by the Absorption (ID: 22) effect.

Saturation (ID: 23) - Adds one hungerpoint to the hunger bar.

Unused Sounds

File Name Sound Notes
old_explode.ogg
The pre-1.0.0 explosion sound. There are two versions of this file. This was removed completely in 1.6.
drr.ogg
DRR...DRR...DRR... Actually, it's the old arrow hit sound. Also removed in 1.6.
hurt.ogg
Another leftover from an older version! This time it's the hurt sound. Once again, this was removed in 1.6.
breath.ogg
Weird, mechanical-sounding breathing. It's quite horrifying.
Note that the Blaze enemy uses a different sounding breathing noise. This was the last unused sound removed in 1.6.
affectionate scream.ogg
Unused voice clip for the Ghast enemy.

Unused Text

Minecraft Multiplayer is currently not finished, but there is some buggy early testing going on.

A remnant from an early version of SMP. Not used anywhere.

%1$s was pummeled by %2$s

Supposed to be used when a player is killed by a snowball, egg, or Ender Pearl, but is unused because these items do not cause any damage when thrown. It can be seen using server mods, however.

Ruby Ore
Ruby

Unused text for the Ruby and Ruby Ore.

This message will never appear on the splash screen, isn't that weird?

A message in the splashes.txt file, which has been hard-coded to never appear. Modifying the splashes.txt file (or applying it with a resource pack) to only contain this line will make the game freeze on the Mojang screen, and the only way to fix it is to either manually replace the splashes.txt with the default one, or remove the resource pack either from the config file or altogether.

translation.test.none=Hello, world!
translation.test.complex=Prefix, %s%2$s again %s and %1$s lastly %s and also %1$s again!
translation.test.escape=%%s %%%s %%%%s %%%%%s
translation.test.invalid=hi %
translation.test.invalid2=hi %  s
translation.test.args=%s %s
translation.test.world=world

This might have been used to test different languages of Minecraft before languages were fully implemented.

Adventure

Same as survival mode, but blocks can't
be added or removed

Though Adventure Mode is functional and can be accessed by using the cheat /gamemode 2, it cannot be selected when creating a new world, rendering this text unused. However, the setting can be re-enabled by modifying GuiCreateWorld.java with the code below (tested in 1.6.4):

else if (par1GuiButton.id == 2)
            {
                if (this.gameMode.equals("survival"))
                {
                    if (!this.commandsToggled)
                    {
                        this.commandsAllowed = false;
                    }

                    this.isHardcore = false;
                    this.gameMode = "hardcore";
                    this.isHardcore = true;
                    this.buttonAllowCommands.enabled = false;
                    this.buttonBonusItems.enabled = false;
                    this.updateButtonText();
                }
                else if (this.gameMode.equals("hardcore"))
                {
                    if (!this.commandsToggled)
                    {
                        this.commandsAllowed = true;
                    }

                    this.isHardcore = false;
                    this.gameMode = "creative";
                    this.updateButtonText();
                    this.isHardcore = false;
                    this.buttonAllowCommands.enabled = true;
                    this.buttonBonusItems.enabled = true;
                }

                 else
                {
                    if (!this.commandsToggled)
                    {
                        this.commandsAllowed = false;
                    }
                    this.gameMode = "adventure";
                    this.updateButtonText();
                    this.isHardcore = false;
                    this.buttonAllowCommands.enabled = false;
                    this.buttonBonusItems.enabled = true;
                }

Oddities

Minceraft?

Minecraft-minceraft.png

Very rarely (about one out of every 10,000 startups), the Minecraft logo is rearranged to read "Minceraft" instead of the usual "Minecraft". This is the secret that Notch said was not found yet. In crash logs at times, one may see the text "You should try our sister game, Minceraft!".

Upside-Down Mobs

Minecraft EasterEggs-Dinnerbone.png
Minecraft EasterEggs-Grumm.png

As of 1.6.1, any mobs named Dinnerbone or Grumm (after two of the game's developers) will be rendered upside-down.

Rainbow Sheep

As of 1.7.2, sheep named jeb_ (after one of the main developers) will continuously cycle through all of the possible colors, though this has no effect on the wool blocks they drop when sheared.

Toast Rabbit

As of 1.8, naming a rabbit "Toast" using either a name tag or a named spawn egg will turn it into "Toast". Toast is textured like a black dutch, with a large black & white patch and more black fur around the face than the natural black & white spotted rabbit. Other than its name and skin, Toast behaves exactly like a normal rabbit.

This rabbit is the skin of user xyZenTV's girlfriend's missing rabbit, which Ryan Holtz implemented as a memorial.
