Minecraft is a brilliant indie survival-sandbox thing.

Splash text error checking

I'll give you three guesses as to what the reference is, and the first two don't count.

If Minecraft detects that splashes.txt is missing (the file containing the randomly-selected yellow text that is displayed on the title screen), it will use "missingno" as the splash text instead. This will also happen if you apply some mods without deleting the "META_INF" folder.

Sponge

The sponge block from Classic is still present in the game, although it has no use and cannot be crafted or obtained through regular means. It can be hacked into one's inventory, given to a player under SMP using /give or obtained semi-legitimately in the Creative mode (introduced in Beta 1.8), however it no longer works, instead behaving like a standard block. Its progamming for detecting water around it still remains in the game, however the programming for actually removing the water doesn't exist anymore.

Locked Chest

The Beta 1.4 update introduced "Steve Co. Supply Crates" that would be created in newly-generated chunks. It was a silly little April Fools' Day prank and a silly little Team Fortress 2 reference! The chests were removed in the 1.4_01 patch, but can still be placed using inventory hacks.

The locked chest block can be destroyed in one hit, and disappears over time. Additionally, it generates light equivalent to a Glowstone block.

Not surprisingly, when the storage chests were updated to use smaller, animated models in Beta 1.8, the locked chests were not changed.

Also,in the snapshot 12w21a their textures were removed and use the blank purple texture, and in snapshot 12w22a the top and bottom have been replaced by the emerald block texture.

Giant

If you hack a monster spawner to spawn giants, you'll realize that the model's gigantic size won't even fit inside the spawner.

A huge Zombie that has a ton of health and deals a ton of damage. Giants were added in the last version of Survival Test but haven't been used since. They can still be spawned through hacks, however.

Lectern

It was meant to be a stand for books so you could easily read them. He was well on his way to creating it when he encountered problems and scrapped the idea.

Unused Potions

These potions all exist in the game, but cannot be brewed or obtained legitimately. All of them act like base potions in that their appearance is a bottle of water and they have no effect when drunk. They can be obtained by modifying a potion's damage value with an inventory editor, or with the /give command on servers.

Damage value Name
6, 7 Clear Potion
11 Diffuse Potion
13 Artless Potion
14, 15 Thin Potion
22, 23 Bungling Potion
27 Smooth Potion
29 Suave Potion
30, 31 Debonair Potion
38, 39 Charming Potion
43 Refined Potion
45 Cordial Potion
46, 47 Sparkling Potion
48 Potent Potion
54, 55 Rank Potion
59 Acrid Potion
61 Gross Potion
62, 63 Stinky Potion

Unused Potion Effects

There are many potion effects in Minecraft, and over half of them don't correspond to any existing potion or item. Some of them don't even have their effects properly implemented! However, all of them have have the names of their corresponding potions defined in the language files.

File:Minecraft-MiningFatigueIcon.png Mining Fatigue - The opposite of the Haste effect: decreases the player's block-breaking speed. Most likely would have been brewed by corrupting a Haste potion with a fermented spider eye.

File:Minecraft-NauseaIcon.png Nausea - Causes the screen to ripple and distort, much like the effect when entering a Nether portal.

File:Minecraft-WaterBreathingIcon.png Water Breathing - Exactly what it sounds like: causes the player's air meter to never deplete while underwater. May have been unimplemented because there already is a water-breathing enchantment for armor.

Minecraft-BlindnessIcon.png Blindness - Drastically reduces the render distance with thick black fog (the same fog that appears in the bottom few layers of the map) as well as preventing sprinting and critical hits.

11

In 1.1, most of the unused music discs were added as items available in Survival, via the same method originally used to get cat; getting a Creeper killed by a Skeleton. The only one that isn't available on Survival (other than where are we now, due to problems with spacing in the filename) is 11.

Unused Sounds

File Name Sound Notes
old_explode.ogg
The pre-1.0.0 explosion sound.
There are two versions of this file.
drr.ogg
DRR...DRR...DRR... Actually,
it's the old arrow hit sound.
hurt.ogg
Another leftover from an older
version! This time it's the hurt sound.
breath.ogg
Weird, mechanical-sounding breathing.
It's quite horrifying. Note that the Blaze enemy uses
a different sounding breathing noise.
affectionate scream.ogg
Unused voice clip for the Ghast enemy.
stare.ogg noicon Unused voice clip for the Endermen enemy.
Should be used for when you
look at the enemy, but isn't. Freaking Creepy.
skeletondeath.ogg noicon Unused voice clip for the Skeleton enemy.
levelup.ogg noicon A jingly jingle. Leveling up currently plays no sound.

Unused graphics

Purple Arrow

You'd think they'd be poisonous arrows, but...

Bundled with the standard arrow graphics are these odd purple arrows. These are actually a leftover from Survival Test, where the Skeleton's arrows were purple. In all subsequent versions, Skeleton arrows use the same graphics as the player's arrows.

Quiver

These are for pansies. Real men carry deadly-sharp arrows in their pockets.

This was actually used in early Indev, but is no longer in use. As long as you can carry arrows without a quiver, it wouldn't be very useful.

Gray Enderdragon

With scales.
Without scales.

The preliminary textures for the Enderdragon boss, seen in older screenshots. The used file is ender.png. The only difference between dragon.png and body.png is that the latter lacks the scales.

Steve the Testificate

It only looks good here. Trust me.

The default player skin remapped to fit the Villager model, presumably as a template. Actually loading it in-game produces a less than desirable appearance. Note that this texture is separate from the actual villager textures, which are in their own subfolder.

Pigman

They must have been killed off by those Testificates.

A variation of the Zombie Pigman that...isn't a zombie. It's been in the game for a while now, but still isn't used.

Basic Villager

A green-robed villager skin. Although this is probably supposed to be used, it isn't. The standard villagers use the farmer.png skin instead.

Footprint

I imagine this wouldn't look good on stone.

A weird little square thing. The file name says it all.

Unused Map Icons

"X" marks the spot!

Some extra icons for the map item. The white arrow in the top left corner is the only one used. The X may have been intended to mark areas with treasure at one point, the colored arrows may have been used for a kind of "partner", and the spinny red arrow was probably to show enemies on the map,or possibly intended for a capture the flag game. Note that some of these icons are used as of snapshot 12w34a.

Snow Golem's true face

The snow golem mob has this goofy face as the front texture for its head. Since the snow golem's head is always obscured by a pumpkin, the face is never seen.
