New Super Mario Bros./Unused Graphics
Object Defined: These have graphics, are set in Map16 (so likely have behaviour set) and are set as objects. The stage the Tiles are defined indicates which how early they were cut.
Map16-Defined: These have graphics and are set in Map16 (so likely have behaviour set).
Graphics-Defined: These only have graphics.
Jyotyu/Common Tileset
Object Defined:
- Water Tile
File:NSMB-Unused Tile Water.PNG
A partially transparent water tile (the graphics, like all other 3D tiles, is located in a separate file to the tileset). The used water is a sprite with a more fluid 3D looking graphics and it is animated. This unused water tile uses an unused water behavior. It can be placed in between tiles, where as the used sprite always covers everything below the height it is set. Mario goes behind the tile, instead of in front of it like most tiles. It does not work correctly unless the ground tile below it has the water behavior and the solid behavior or the water sprite is also present. There are no tiles in the game with the water behavior and the solid behavior. Strangely, if there is lava or poison water in the same area as the water, it behaves like them (kills the player on touch).
- Round Yellow Coin Outline
Activated by a ! switch, you can't collect it.
- Round Red Coin Outline
Activated by a ! switch, acts like a normal coin once activated.
- 5-Coins contained in ? block
When hit coins slowly float out over 45 degrees. Seems fitting to be used underwater because of the coins speed, and the fact that if you ground pound it you collect them all instantly (you cannot do this underwater, because you can't ground pound underwater).
- Mushroom contained in ? block
A ? block that produces a mushroom no-matter what power-up the player is currently. Used in Unused Level 4 and 5. There is also an invisible variety of this.
There is also a question block that lets out a mushroom if Mario is small and a coin if else.
- ? block which throws out coin
A ? block that throws out a coin, like the ones used in ghost houses that throw out a power-up.
Nohara/Grassland Tileset
Object Defined:
- Destroyed Tiles
This tileset has unused tiles which are made up of "X" patterns which have no tile behavior set. The X pattern tiles seem to be a method used by Nintendo to mark deleted tiles in this game. They appear in Unused Level 1 and from the way they are used there, it appears that they used to be mushroom platforms like in the sky tilesets. Early versions of the game featured mushroom platforms in ground levels, as you can see in some screen shots and videos.
- Line Guides
The tileset also has line guide tiles (which are followed by some sprites) which have the line guide tile behavior set (this enables sprites to follow it). These tiles are used in Unused Level 2, wherein platforms follow them.
- Thick Edges
Thick version of the ground edges, may have been used instead of the normal edges or for decoration or so the unused tile water fits beside them neatly without a gap where you can see through to the background clearly (see Tile Water screenshot above - they appear therein).
Yakata/Castle Tileset
This tileset has lava tiles in it. The lava used in-game is a sprite, so this goes unused.
Object Defined:
- Lava Tile
File:NSMB-Unused Tile Lava.PNG
File:NSMB-Unused Lava Tile-Animated.gif
An animated lava tile (the animation, like all other tile animation, is located in a separate file to the tileset). The used lava is a sprite with a more fluid 3D looking animation. It uses an unused lava behavior and appears in unused level 2. It can be placed in between tiles, where as the used sprite always covers everything below the height it is set. Versions of it can be seen in early versions of the game:
NSMB E3 - Early Prototype (0:45)
New Super Mario Bros Beta Trailer 2005
- Pillar
A 3D pillar, so it is stored in a seperate file from the tileset. It appears 2D and might as well be stored with the other tiles, if there was enough room.
Obakeyasiki/Ghost House Tileset
Mystery Cut Tiles From The Cutting Room Floor
Out now in cinemas near you, very near you - actually it's that new cinema mysteriously built right by your house, yes that one; How Strange..
Object Defined:
- Dark Doorway
A dark doorway with a light on top. It has the normal door behavior, but this doorway does not function correctly with the behavior anymore.
- Graphics Defined
- Boo Statue
A statue of a boo.
The stand was probably meant to be copied and flipped around in Map16, so it would look like this:
Chika/Underground Tileset
This section refers to all variations of this tileset.
(This includes: Underground with ice, Underground without ice, Blue Underground (unused), Yellow Underground (unused)).
Object Defined:
- Solid on top
To do:
|
A unique underground jump-through-but-solid-on-top platform. The regular jump through platform used for all levels ended up being used for underground levels too.
Tikei Yakata Nise/World 8 - Castle Tileset
Object Defined:
- Grey Bricks
These use the same sort-of colours as the stone blocks and are beside them. So these were probably meant to be used in-between the blocks.
- Early Boss Room
To do:
|
Inside this tileset, is essentially another tileset.
It's looks like stone, and it has been covered in blue X's.
A Mega Goomba once occupied a room made with these tiles in an early version of the game.
