The 5th generation of Pokémon games starts with this pair of games on the DS. Set in the far-off Unova region (based on New York City!), they introduce a full set of new Pokémon; not a single older Pokémon makes an appearance before the Elite Four except for Pikachu. Yes, you read that right. It also has more of an emphasis on the storyline of the game.

Unused Items

Key items from Generation IV

All the key items from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl through to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver still exist in this game. This includes the unused key items from Diamond/Pearl.

Poké Balls not used in Black and White

These are in the game for compatibility with Pokémon caught in the previous games. These include Safari Balls and Bug-Catching Contest/Apricorn Balls from HeartGold/SoulSilver, among others. If hacked into the bag, most of them can't actually be used.

On a related note, Dream Balls, when hacked into the Bag outside of the Entree Forest, work as normal Pokéballs. Cherish Balls (used for distributions) that are hacked into the Bag work the same way.

God Stone

Wonder Launcher power-ups

There are several items used only in the Wonder Launcher multiplayer battle mode. These items are temporary power-ups for Pokémon which are more potent than typical ones. If hacked into the bag they can't actually be used.

Poké Toy

Key Item version exists.

Lock Capsule

This unreleased event item from HeartGold and SoulSilver was intended to be transferred to Black and White. It was never distributed, but it works perfectly- the Relocator in Castelia City can take the Lock Capsule, giving it to the player of the Generation V game. Taking to Mr. Lock in Castelia City enables you to open it, revealing TM95, which contains Snarl.

TM95

Seeing as its planned distribution method never happened, TM95 isn't normally obtainable in Black and White. Until the sequels, the only way to get Snarl was to breed it from an event Zoroark or a Smeargle that has Sketched it from it.

Unused Hidden Abilities

Hmmm...
To do:
Make this section not suck (a table would be nice)

In the Generation V games, it is possible to find Pokémon with special "hidden Abilities". However, some Pokémon couldn't be encountered with hidden Abilities through any legitimate means, rendering the hidden Abilities unused in normal gameplay.

  • Articuno (Snow Cloak)
  • Zapdos (Lightningrod)
  • Moltres (Flame Body)
  • Chikorita (Leaf Guard) / Bayleef (Leaf Guard) / Meganium (Leaf Guard)
  • Cyndaquil (Flash Fire) / Quilava (Flash Fire) / Typhlosion (Flash Fire)
  • Totodile (Sheer Force) / Croconaw (Sheer Force) / Feraligatr (Sheer Force)
  • Raikou (Volt Absorb)
  • Entei (Flash Fire)
  • Suicune (Water Absorb)
  • Regirock (Sturdy)
  • Regice (Ice Body)
  • Registeel (Light Metal)
  • Heatran (Flame Body)
  • Snivy (Contrary) / Servine (Contrary) / Serperior (Contrary)
  • Tepig (Thick Fat) / Pignite (Thick Fat) / Emboar (Reckless)
  • Oshawott (Shell Armor) / Dewott (Shell Armor) / Samurott (Shell Armor)
  • Gothita (Shadow Tag)
  • Klink (Clear Body)
  • Litwick (Shadow Tag) / Lampent (Shadow Tag) / Chandelure (Shadow Tag)
  • Rufflet (Hustle)
  • Larvesta (Swarm) / Volcarona (Swarm)

Note that Gothita, Klink, and Rufflet's evolutions have hidden Abilities that can be found in-game. However, because these hidden Abilities were only given to males (or, in the case of Klink, genderless Pokémon), obtaining these hidden Abilities through breeding is impossible in the Generation V games.

The new breeding mechanics of the Generation VI games gave Gothita and Rufflet their previously-unused hidden Abilities. Due to Klink being genderless, the change in breeding mechanics did not affect it, and its hidden Ability remains unused.

Larvesta and Volcarona can now be found with their hidden Ability in the Generation VI games.

Also of note is that Litwick, Lampent, and Chandelure's hidden Ability in the Generation VI games changed from Shadow Tag to Infiltrator. These Pokémon can now be found in the Generation VI games with Infiltrator. Zapdos's hidden Ability was changed to Static in Generation VI, for it can be seen with this Ability in the Battle Maison. However, it still remains unobtainable.

Unused Graphics

Among the few uncompressed graphics are logos for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, probably because Black and White were built on top of those games. There are also graphics for the underground mining minigame, which is not present in B/W.

Unused fonts and text entry

There are a complete set of Japanese and English fonts; they look fairly simple and unpolished, and the hiragana font seems to have been freehanded with a mouse.

They can each be combined with a single palette and tilemap to form the following screens, presumably used to input text:

These graphics and tilemaps are present in both the Japanese, North American, and European releases.

Unused Sound Test Graphics

There are also unused graphics for what looks like either one hell of a sound test, or a whole sound mixer:

Pokemon Black (J) Sound Test.png

They have a single palette and two tilemaps:

These graphics are present in the Japanese, North American, and European releases.

Unused Camera Controls

There are graphics for an unused camera controller present.

Unused Wonder Launcher Item Sprites

PKMN BW WonderL Unused1.png PKMN BW WonderL Unused2.png PKMN BW WonderL Unused3.png

In the files for the Wonder Launcher item sprites are three textures that resemble the items Max Ether, Elixir and Max Elixir.

Unused 3D Models

There are unused 3D models for both Dialga and Palkia from the title screen of Diamond & Pearl.

Hmmm...
To do:
What about the Ho-oh and Lugia models from HeartGold and SoulSilver?

Anti-Piracy

If the game detects the player is playing on a flash card or emulator, the game will freeze at random points and the player's Pokémon will be unable to gain experience points.

Also, if certain modifications are made to the game (i.e. Action Replay codes for Complete Pokédex, 999 Masterballs, etc.), Game Sync may become permanently unusable. That is, until the effects of the modification are completely reversed, in which case Game Sync will return to functioning normally.

Hmmm...
To do:
Not sure if this is just a bad side-effect of Action Replay, needs to be checked

Prototype Maps

Hmmm...
To do:
When in the P2 Lab, head downward to find another map that's textureless. I need to figure out where this is in the game and get the textures showing up, as well as document it.

Nacrene Museum

A modified version of Nacrene Museum exists in the ROM of the game. It contains vastly different textures and modified movement permissions, as well as additional polygons that shouldn't be where they are. The version of the map in the video is a result of file swapping, so all the scripts of the original Nacrene Museum are used. The state of the room at the time suggests that this copy of the room could have been a damaged version of the room (Given events from early on in the game), or that it could have had debugging features at one time. As well, this room shows that at one point, there was only one entry point to the Gymnasium, as opposed to 3. This map also exists in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.

Differences:

  • Completely different textures that aren't used anywhere else in the game
  • Some polygons are missing and there are some additional polygons
  • There are no artifacts on the shelves, and signs to denote what the item on the table is are replaced with flower pots
  • There is a soda machine and a sign on the wall that are not present in the final
  • The doorway leading to the gym has the movement permissions for a doorway that is three spaces wide, but only uses one space
  • There is a random, unused polygon
  • There is a doormat at the entrance to the building
  • There are incorrect movement permissions

Unused Sound/Music

Deep inside the game's music files the following VOs appear with their respective names:

SEQ_SE_DDEMO_01

SEQ_SE_DDEMO_02A

SEQ_SE_DDEMO_02B

SEQ_SE_DDEMO_03

Kyurem Alternate Forme Placeholder Data

Hmmm...
To do:
Add the excerpt from the table seen in the source article.

There exists placeholder data for an alternate form of Kyurem in Black and White. There is a table within the game's coding that specifies the number of Formes/forms a Pokémon has. Pokémon that have no alternate forms are listed with the number 0. Pokémon with alternate forms are listed with a number corresponding to the number of forms they have. For example, Pikachu has the number 0, while Deoxys has the number 4. (Note that Genesect has 5, based on its normal form and the four Drives, but the Pokédex does not list them as separate Formes.) There is one exception to this: Kyurem is the only Pokémon listed with the number 1. This number is meant to be a placeholder, meaning that at least one alternate Forme is in development.

This was previously seen in the coding of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, in which Rotom, Giratina, and Shaymin had the number 1 listed.

Kyurem ended up with two new Formes, Black Kyurem and White Kyurem, in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. Tornadus, Thunderus, Landorus, and Keldeo, which all gained new Formes in the sequels, are listed with the number 0, suggesting that the alternate Formes for these Pokémon were not in development until later.
