Pokémon Crystal is the update to Pokémon Gold and Silver plus Suicune and the mobile Goldenrod Pokécenter stuff, which is removed from all versions except for the Japanese version. Pokémon Crystal was notable for being the first Pokémon game where you could play as a female character.

Goldenrod

Pokémon Center GS Ball Event

Hmmm...
To do:
Was the U.S. distribution method similar to one in the JP version? I can't seem to find any specifics about this.

One of the primary differences between Japanese Crystal and Gold & Silver is that the Pokémon Center in Goldenrod is replaced with the Pokémon Communication Center (PokéCom Center) to allow access to the Pokémon Mobile System GB. Japan could connect their Game Boys to their mobile phones using a special cable and access the wireless network, which closed two years after Crystal's release. This feature is very similar to the Global Terminal featured in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Players in the U.S. also had the ability to get Celebi through the New York Pokémon Center, but only during its opening month (November/December 2001). Although no legitimate method was used outside of Japan and a portion of the U.S., the code remains in them.

This is what the PCC looks like from the outside. Its sign says, "For mobile tips! POKéCOM CENTER"

Pokemoncrystal pcc.png

This is what the first floor of the PCC looks like. The left-most desk continues to operate as a Pokémon healing service, while the center desk acts as the mobile trade center, and the area to the far right is the Pokémon News Machine where players could read about each other's Pokémon adventures. The stairs go to the typical second floor Pokémon Center layout with the regular link cable rooms. The pink door in the upper left corner leads to the administration.

And this is the administration, which can be reached by the aforementioned door at the left of the map.

The GS ball event got reprogrammed and adapted to a regular PokéCenter. This event can be activated by setting the byte at 0x3E44 in a regular (v1.0 U) savegame to 0x0B. This was possibly done to use the GS Ball as a Pokémon Day Event Give-Away Item. You can also use the following GameShark code:

Crystal U 1.0 Crystal G 1.0
010B44BE
010B3CBE

Semi-unused music

This game has three songs that are unused. They were supposedly used in the Japanese version, but when Nintendo inexplicably removed the special features of the Japanese version, the music used in these exotic features became unused too. Nevertheless, they are still in the game's ROM.

Game Genie code ??A-F2A-B3B will play any song at the main menu screen. They can also be listened to with the GameShark code 01xxA9C2, which modifies the music when on the map. xx can be replaced with 5E, 5F, or .

The Music

This remix of the Pokémon Center music is the background music for the Pokémon Communications Center in the Japanese version. ID 66.

This music was used for the Japan-only "Mobile" function. ID 5F.

(Source: source needed)

ID 5E. Yet another one of the unused songs. Its purpose is also unknown, though is also present in the Japanese version of Pokémon Stadium 2"sparse41.miniusf".

Other information

It is worth noting that music was planned to play on the GBC-only message screen as load functions are present. The music from Gold/Silver's opening sequences remains in the ROM, despite not being used in Crystal.

Super Game Boy Features

Unused border in Crystal Version.

Even though Pokémon Crystal is not compatible with the Super Game Boy, it has an unused Super Game Boy border programmed into the game. It can be enabled by setting the SGB flag (at offset 146) to 03. It appears to be leftover from the Japanese Gold version; being that the border does not fit well with Crystal, it was likely that it was never intended to be used at all (unlike the case with Telefang). To enable SGB features on hardware, use the Game Genie code: 031-46F-E6A. Note: Because the SGB checks for the SGB bit after booting, you must first power-up the SGB with any game that has SGB enhancements inserted into the Game Genie, then insert Pokémon Crystal with the Game Genie to see the hidden features.

Unused Palettes

There are several unused palettes that may be left over from Gold and Silver versions.

The unused commands are listed at 0x9A86.
