Hmmm...
To do:
  • Grammar and wording
  • Search for unused sounds
  • Regional differences (e.g. Fall City flags)
  • More unused NPC frames and palettes
  • Prerelease material (Rhyhorn, early HUD, etc.)
  • Debug and localization prototypes and internal material from 2020 leaks

In Pokémon Ranger, your character takes the role of a Pokémon Ranger, who has the ability to capture Pokémon with their Styler (with the usage of the Touch Screen) in order to solve various problems that may or may not be related to a major conflict. Capture on!

Removed Pokémon

Several leftovers and references imply that the developers intended to include even more Pokémon. Only Onix, Unown and Castform have not appeared in any Ranger game.

Igglybuff (pupurin)

PR1-pupurin.png PR1-pupurinShiny.png

The file pokemon/pupurin.dat contains unused sprites and a Shiny palette for Igglybuff. This Pokémon would finally appear in Guardian Signs where these sprites are used.

Jumpluff (watakku)

PR1-watakku man2.png

The existence of these frames which are found among the Drowzee Guy sprites suggest that Jumpluff was meant to be featured in this game. Of its evolutionary line, only Hoppip appears in this game whereas Skiploom and Jumpluff would finally appear in Guardian Signs.

Unown (unknown)

PR1-unknown ex.png PR1-unknown exShiny.png

Only the sprites for its exclamation mark form can be found in the game's files. However, the file menu/pokemon_filename.dat (used to assign the Pokédex sprites) references all other shapes as well. A complete list of these references can be found on the notes page. Like every other Pokémon it has a Shiny palette as well.

Wailord (whaloh)

Unlike other removed Pokémon, Wailord has dummied-out data at slot $C7. The file it tries to load (pokemon/whaloh.dat) does not exist anymore. When loaded into the game, Wailord cannot be caught due to unfinished data. In Shadows of Almia Wailord is automatically added to the Browser after rescuing and befriending it, as the game states that it is too big to capture properly.

Castform (powarun)

Four references for each of its forms can be found in the file menu/pokemon_filename.dat.

Sunflora, Sudowoodo, Cacnea & Cacturne

PR1-Obj-HIMAWARIGITAI.png PR1-Obj-AYASHIIKI.png PR1-Obj-SABOTENGITAI A.png PR1-Obj-SABOTENGITAI B.png

Target variants of these Pokémon can be found in the files (see here). The existence of these objects implies that these Pokémon were in the game at some point.

Onix (iwark)

This is also referenced in target data, however, all graphics (pokemon/iwark.dat) for Onix have been removed. Onix likely served as a boss fight like Steelix does in the final game.

Removed Maps

desert_m ($A9) (Kalakka Desert)

The temperature here swings far between
day and night, and an arid wind blows.

Some dummied-out data exists for a location called Kalakka Desert that was ultimately scrapped. All that is left is an unused entry in the map header table; the map file desert_m has been removed. As the filename is suffixed, it is very likely that Kalakka Desert was a rather large cut area. The unused track SEQ_FIELD01 is set to play here.

mountain_j ($86) (Sekra Range)

An unknown scrapped area from Sekra Range.

Capture Maps

All the backgrounds for capture sequences are coded as actual maps. Leftover data for some removed backgrounds can be found in the map data:

  • crock ($04)
  • csand ($05)
  • ctile2 ($98)
  • cana ($D2)

Unused Music

ID Filename Song Notes
$04 SEQ_ENCOUNT
An alternate version of the encounter jingle.
$05 SEQ_FIELD01
This piece of music was supposed to play in the removed Kalakka Desert location. It doesn’t really fit the style of the game's soundtrack, implying that this song was created early in development.
$06 SEQ_GAMEOVER
A short tune that would've played if the Capture Styler broke. It would be used in the sequel.
$08 SEQ_RESULT
Another short tune likely intended to be used after a Capture Challenge ends. Interestingly, this ends up being unused in the sequel.
$1C SEQ_JUNGLETOWN
A track based on Olive Jungle's leading motif. It is possible that this is the original background music for Summerland o an entirely different location near Olive Jungle.
$1F SEQ_RIVAL
A short and unknown melody without a known purpose. This one does not sound rival-y at all.
$24 SEQ_CHARACTER
Yet another mysterious tune. Might have been used for the sequence where the player has to select their gender or enter their name.
$25 SEQ_FINALCAPTURE01 This removed track would have been the battle theme for either Raikou or Suicune. The track FINALCAPTURE02 is used for both of them whereas Entei uses FINALCAPTURE03.
$34 SEQ_JINGLE01
A short version of the saving jingle without the looping bridge. The full version that is used in the final game is called SEQ_SAVE_BRIDGE.
$35 SEQ_JINGLE02
An unknown jingle that does not fit the game's style.

Unused Field Moves

Hmmm...
To do:
Investigate this.

There are some unused field moves, but it's not known if they are functional.
