The first main-series Pokémon games in full 3D, Pokémon X and Y are set in the faraway region of Kalos and feature 72 new Pokémon, a huge regional Pokédex separated into three sections, and brand new features such as Mega Evolution, giving Pokémon from previous games a new look, stat boosts, and the occasional type/Ability change for the duration of a battle.

Also, fashion and cafés. It is the equivalent of France, after all.

Revisional Differences

Version 1.1

On October 25, 2013, a patch was released on the Nintendo eShop for both games. The patch contained update data for the games, updating the game to Version 1.1.

Besides "Ver. 1.1" being added to the bottom screen of the main menu, the patch fixed two problems:

  • In the original version of the game, a nasty bug occurred when saving on the Northern and Southern Boulevards of Lumiose City. When the player saves the game, the game may freeze, forcing the player to reset the Nintendo 3DS system. However, when the game is reloaded, the save data cannot be loaded. Along with fixing the glitch, the update supposedly repaired the corrupted save data for anyone who was already affected by this glitch.
  • In the original release, the filtering system of the GTS was bugged, and using certain filters would crash the game when confirming a trade.

Version 1.2

Another patch update was released on December 12, 2013, containing an update to Version 1.2. The patch also contained the v1.1 patch for those who had not yet downloaded it. The "Ver. 1.1" text on the main menu was changed to "Ver. 1.2".

Version 1.2 fixed the following problems:

  • Pokémon that evolve by trade not learning new moves after evolving if received through Wonder Trade.
  • Various PR Studio captions not being unlocked even after fulfilling the requirements.
  • The final fix was branded as "updating an Internet communication issue". This fix was actually a patch to the online battle and trade to fix the following oversights:
    • In online battles, the data from the player (i.e. a move that was chosen, a Pokémon to be switched out, etc.) was immediately sent to the server as soon as it was ready, unlike previous games, in which the data would be sent after both players had finished selecting their next move. This spurred devious hackers to create a program called the "Battle Analyzer" that would read the data that was sent from the opposing player, allowing them to unfairly predict and counter their enemies' strategies.
    • Within the game, the player had a select "Shiny Value" (SV) that would determine the probability of an egg hatching into a shiny Pokémon. A program called "Instacheck" was created to help determine this value and match it with other players, allowing them to receive eggs through online trade that were guaranteed to hatch into shiny Pokémon.

The v1.2 patch is now required in order to connect to the Internet and use online features. Once the patch is downloaded, players will be able to participate in Rating Battles, which were disabled for several weeks following the release of the Battle Analyzer exploit.

Unobtainable Shiny Pokémon

For the sake of consistency, every Pokémon in every Pokémon game is given a Shiny variant. Most Shiny Pokémon have been obtainable through random chance encounters or event distributions, including most Legendary Pokémon. However, a few Pokémon cannot be obtained in this form without hacking, and as a consequence, normal players would never be able to see their Shiny coloration.

  • Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde – These Legendary Pokémon are encountered via fixed in-game battles. However, their probability of being Shiny is locked at 0.

  • Diancie – Because this Pokémon is only received through distributions, its Shiny variant cannot be obtained.
  • Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo – Shiny versions of these Pokémon were available in previous games, but their encounters in this game are Shiny-locked. Therefore, their Shiny variants are only obtainable through the PokéTransporter, and they cannot be both Shiny and Kalos native at the same time.

Unused Audio

bgm_xy_test themes

There are 7 versions of the same song, all named bgm_xy_test1 through bgm_xy_test7. They're all the same song: "Friends Theme - A New Meeting", although the waveforms of 1-3 are slightly different from 4-7. These songs may have been used for testing various locations of overworld themes before they were implemented.

me_xy_test themes

There are three files, me_xy_test1 through me_xy_test3, which are all just copies of the Pokémon Center's healing machine sound effect. This could have been used for testing player-related sound effects.

Sound Debug Logs

Within the RomFS, there are two files called out.txt and out2.txt present in a folder called "sounddebug". Both of them only contain numbers and nothing more.

Unused Text

A wild Wonder Card appears!

This placeholder text is used for distribution Wonder Cards that don't have an event title attached to them. As all distribution Wonder Cards have an event title, this title goes unseen.

Lost Debugging Files

Hmmm...
To do:
There's probably more. I won't know all of them until I can analyse each of the files myself.

There are a handful of debugging-related files in the romfs, however, they are 0 bytes in size, rendering them useless.

Unused Items

Leftover Items

Leftover Key Items

As with every game since Generation IV, every single Key Item from previous games, used and unused, remains in X and Y, completely unused. Everything from the Seal Bag to the Lock Capsule still exists, but with its uses removed.

Wonder Launcher Items

The items that went unused outside of Wonder Launcher multiplayer battles in Generation V are now completely unused, as the Wonder Launcher mode does not exist in X and Y.

Poké Balls

The Apricorn Balls from HeartGold and SoulSilver remain nonfunctional, but the Dream Ball from Black and White and the Safari Ball from previous games can be hacked into the Bag and function properly.

Apricorns

The Apricorns themselves from HeartGold and SoulSilver can be hacked into the bag,but have no use.

New Unused Items

Common Stone

A Key Item found at 0x02BA. Presumably, the player would've found out that the Intriguing Stone was not a Mega Stone and therefore completely useless, changing it to the Common Stone. This never occurs, and the player keeps the Intriguing Stone and (optionally) returns it to the Hiker that first found it in exchange for a Sun Stone.

Travel Trunk

The Key Items found at 0x02C2 and 0x02C3 are two variants of the same item, apparently for the male and female player character, respectively. Their exact use is unknown.

Shalour Sable

A medicinal item found at 0x02C5. This item is briefly mentioned in game, but never obtained by the player. This would probably have a similar effect to the Lumiose Galette.

Holo Caster

While the version used in-game is present at 0x0281, another one exists at 0x02CA, unused. The reason for this duplicate is unknown.

Key Stone Items

While the player only uses the Mega Ring, Korrina's Mega Glove and Diantha's Mega Charm exist as Key Items at 0x02CC and 0x02CD, respectively.
