kame-houdai-chr-C.OBJ
A narrow tube that shoots out Koopa shells.
A small, walking cannon.
The same small cannon, as well as a larger one. They shoot out Koopa shells.
A wind-up key likely meant to be attached to the cannons, although it looks huge compared to the small cannon.
chr-stock
These .OBJ files are found in NEWS\NEWS\テープリストア\NEWS_11\NEWS_11\hino\z-mario-4\chr-stock.
chr_stock_minidragon.OBJ

An unknown creature dancing on a row of blocks.
chr_stock_minidragon-1.OBJ
An animation of Yoshi eating a yellow shell.
chr-stock-3-imomushi.OBJ
| Early | Final |
|---|---|
An early version of a Wiggler walking. It wears a cone on its head instead of a flower like the final version.
chr-stock-7.OBJ
An unknown large bird flying.
Animated water.
chr-stock-8-parakuri.OBJ
| Early | Final |
|---|---|
The parachuting Goomba had a snappier looking animation compared to the final, though it has one unique sprite of the Goomba rotated more outward.
A baby Yoshi eating an unknown object. Upon closer inspection, the unknown object seems to be some kind of blue Buzzy Beetle.
Sprites
luiji.CGX
Very early versions of Mario and Luigi, the latter of which originally had unique graphics instead of being a palette swap of Mario. Some of Mario's sprites seem to be the very same being shown off here and here. Also, a Lakitu with a square cloud, that is more reminiscent of its appearance in previous Mario games.
MARI-CORE-luiji.CGX
A scratchpad of sprite data for Luigi's distinct graphics implemented in Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World. This sheet is notable for containing a sprite of what seems to be Luigi giving the finger.
X-2A.CGX
A Koopaling mask. It may have been an early version of the Mario mask Koopa Troopas wear in the post-Special Zone theme.
A flower with a mustache, both with and without shading. It was an early design for the Special Zone Piranha Plants.
Two early versions of the Fuzzy.
X-2A-nomoto.CGX
An early Goomba.
An early Koopa shell. It has different shading compared to the final one.
Koopa Troopa sprites that are reminiscent of their Super Mario Bros. 3 appearance.
v-ram-ending-TEKI-meka-kuppa.CGX
A coin with a star symbol on it, meant for an early version of the smiley coins. This idea was possibly repurposed for the Star Coins in New Super Mario Bros.
v-ram-kabe.CGX
A row of early Mario sprites farther along than those seen in luiji.CGX. Can be seen in the Ghost House pre-release screenshot and some of the Castle screenshots.
Various sprites from Super Mario Bros. 3 updated to 16-bit. Both the Fire Flower and Super Leaf can be seen in the item reservoir in two of the screenshots here. On the far left of one of them, you can also see the ? block.
v-ram-map
A sideways 6 sign.
v-ram-night.CGX
Sprites of Goombas, who were replaced with the Galoombas. These sprites are reminiscent of their Super Mario Bros. 3 appearance and are the same ones used by the Paragoombas in one of the screenshots here.
An early Yoshi with the ability to breathe fire.
A scrapped Koopaling portrait that was most likely going to be used in the Ghost Houses.
v-ram-yane.CGX
| Early | Final |
|---|---|
The Koopa shell has different shading.
| Early | Final |
|---|---|
The climbing Koopa Troopa sprites had different shading and were later given shoes.
A Beach Koopa's head biting.
Early Koopa Troopa sprites, with different shading from X-2A-nomoto.CGX.
v-ram-nakagon.CGX
Early versions of the Dino Rhino, from a profile view instead of a 3/4 side view.
Early Dino-Torches.
A strange flower baby creature that resembles a Toad in a flower suit.
v-ram-sora-demo.CGX
An unknown flaming head, possibly intended for the fireballs that Yoshi spits when eating a red/fire enemy.
v-ram-big-killer.CGX
| Early | Final |
|---|---|
|
|
An early version of the Banzai Bill that resembles a standard Bullet Bill enemy more than the final sprite does. Seen in two screenshots here.
v-ram-ghost-ship.CGX
Sprites of Rocky Wrench, an enemy from Super Mario Bros. 3 that doesn't appear in Super Mario World. Similar sprites were used for the Rocky Wrenches seen in the Super Mario World style of Super Mario Maker.
v-ram-mode-7-peach-test.CGX
| Early | Final |
|---|---|
Early sprites of Princess Peach with bigger eyes.
| Earliest | Early | Final |
|---|---|---|
Early sprites of Princess Peach screaming. The first was... thankfully redrawn, while the other's main differences are in her eyelashes and shading.
Unique sprites of Mario standing up straight, curiously capless too.
A Peach sprite that resembles the puppets seen during the Lemmy and Wendy fights in the final game.
v-ram-chica.CGX
An empty block with eyebrows and glasses.
A coin that's similar in size to the Dragon Coins and probably would've been worth 10 coins according to its symbol.
Another early incarnation of Yoshi with a shorter snout.
v-ram-gosthose.CGX
A big coin with Mario's face on it. It was probably an early version of the Dragon Coins.
chr-stock-1.CGX
Possibly the earliest version of Yoshi, taking on a very lanky and primitive appearance. It is reminiscent of an early concept sketch of Yoshi Shigeru Miyamoto drew during the development of Super Mario Bros.
An unknown crocodile-like Koopa Troopa.
An early Koopa Troopa sprite.
A small Hammer Bro, an enemy that does not appear in Super Mario World.
v-ram-ending-doragon-house.CGX
A large, orange coin. Considering its size, it may have been a placeholder Dragon Coin. It can be seen in a 1989 screenshot here.
chr-stock-2.CGX
This sprite sheet is exactly the same as the one shown here.
chr-stock-3.CGX
Early versions of the Dry Bones (one of them being similar to its Super Mario Bros. 3 counterpart) and the Bony Beetle.
Early versions of the Galoomba.
What appears to be a scrapped Acorn Mushroom.
chr-stock-B.CGX
A sheet of early dolphins and some kind of shark. Sharks would later debut in another 2D Mario game, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
An empty big block.
Some patches.
chr-stock-C.CGX
The Venus Fire Trap (from Super Mario Bros. 3) and a standard Piranha Plant that goes up. In the final game, standard Piranha Plants only go down. While sprites for an upward standard Piranha Plant do exist in the final game's data, the sprite for their vine was replaced in memory with one of the frames of a flopping Cheep Cheep.
Two early sprites of Mario looking up.
Sprites of Mario crouching in two distinct ways.
A grey wind key.
A tiny Yoshi looking ahead that bears resemblance to the one that appears in the unused No-Yoshi sign.
chr-stock-H.CGX
A sheet of early small Marios.
Super Mario with Small Mario's eyes.
chr-stock-I-kuppa.CGX
Early Bowser sprites.
An unknown Piranha Plant-like enemy.
chr-stock-L-kuppa.CGX
A sheet of full-body Bowser sprites, including what seems to be an early propeller for the Koopa Clown Car, which looks more like a wind-up toy key.
