Proto:Conker's Bad Fur Day/ECTS Demo
This is a sub-page of Proto:Conker's Bad Fur Day.
| Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors. This page contains content that is not safe for work or other locations with the potential for personal embarrassment. |
| This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. |
| Please elaborate. Having more detail is always a good thing. |
| To do: Goddamn everything. There are so many differences to add and so many little quirks here and there. Some info on ConkerGuru's WIP ECTS page and Banjo's Backpack. |
Compiled on 25 August, 2000, this build was demonstrated for the ECTS. Given how radically Conker's Bad Fur Day was changed during development, starting with a happy, colorful world and then becoming a game about a squirrel swimming in diarrhea, it should be not so surprising that this game has a prototype... but it actually has two. This page is specifically for the (hugely different) ECTS demo prototype.

Cheat Codes
GameShark
Due to the limited scope of the demo, many of the things mentioned here cannot be reached normally. Use the following GameShark codes to surpass these limitations.
800A679F 00xx
- Cutscene Skip; xx refers to any cutscene in the demo.
8107716A 0000
- Disable Reset Timer. By default, the game resets after reaching a certain time, likely to prevent one from getting too far into the game and to allow other people to play the game at ECTS.
D00D0D18 0004 800D0D18 0000
- Disable all instances of Game Overs. Even with the timer disabled, there are still areas that the player might reach that automatically end the game regardless of whether time has run out or not. Very useful for actually playing levels for extended periods of time.
800D0BD3 00xx
- Go to a portion of the main menu. By default, both chapters and options are locked off. Changing xx to 01 goes to the options screen, while 02 goes to the chapters screen. As soon as you select one of the available options, turn on the cheat and the game will take you here instead.
Cheat Menu Stuff
Note that since the cheat menu is nonfunctional in this build, a cheat code device or hacking is needed to get these working. There are a few cheats with known effects, with what would be the cheat itself and the GameShark code needed to enable it. The ones that do work are:
- BEELZEBUBSBUM (800DE623 0004) - "Hitler" easter egg
- SPUNKJOCKEY (800DE623 0008) - Slow motion kills with katana/chainsaw
- EASTEREGGSAREUS (800DE623 0010) - Unlock Neo Conker in multiplayer
- WELLYTOP (800DE623 0020) - Unlock Conker in multiplayer
- NUTBINGCOEDS (800DE623 0040) - Unlock weasel guard in multiplayer
- BAPHOMETSVAN (800DE623 0080) - Unlock cavemen in multiplayer
- BEEFCURTAINS (800DE622 0001) - Unlock zombies in multiplayer
- BOVRILBULLETHOLE (800DE622 0002) - Conker with caveman afro
- DRACULASTEABAGS (800DE622 0004) - Conker with caveman mohawk
- DUTCHOVENS (800DE622 0008) - Conker with caveman spiky hair
- KOJACKSROLLNECK (800DE622 0010) - 1 Player Multiplayer Resolution Option
- WELDERSBENCH (800DE622 0080) - Unlock all chapters
- RUSTYSHERIFFSBADGE (800DE621 0001) - Unlock Squirrel Sergeant and Tediz Leader in multiplayer
- BILLYMILLROUNDABOUT (800DE621 0002) - Unlock Gregg in multiplayer
The non-working ones are:
- BIFFINSBRIDGE
- CHOCOLATESTARFISH
- DEBUG
- MONKEYSCHIN
- SKIP CUTSCENES
- SPEEDY MOVE
- CHEAT TWENTY ONE
- CHEAT TWENTY TWO
- CHEAT TWENTY THREE
- CHEAT TWENTY FOUR
- CHEAT TWENTY FIVE
- CHEAT TWENTY SIX
- CHEAT TWENTY SEVEN
- CHEAT TWENTY EIGHT
- CHEAT TWENTY NINE
- CHEAT THIRTY
- CHEAT THIRTY ONE
- CHEAT THIRTY TWO
General Differences
- Throughout the demo, a rotating Rareware logo can be seen on the upper left corner of the screen at all times. This was likely to identify the cart in the event it was stolen.
- There are set playtime limits in the demo that cannot be surpassed without the use of cheat codes.
- At several points, the subtitles are censored, but the actual audio is not.
- Most of the Rumble Pak features are missing. The only ones that have been found so far are the Machine Gun Shots.
Title Screen
In the final game, it goes straight to Conker walking into a bar after the logos. The closest thing the final game has to a title screen is the opening sequence. However, enabling the following code and pressing Up on the D-Pad enables a semi-working version of a title screen.
D00D1054 0008 800D0D18 0002
In it, some demos play in the background, but they seem to have been made for an earlier build. There is also blinking text with the words "Press Start".
Cutscene Differences
Opening
- No Nintendo logo appears in the intro.
- The Dolby Surround logo appears as it zooms onto Conker's face before fading out in the logo sequence. In the final game, it appears alongside a long wall of legal text before the logo sequence.
Intro Sequence
- Barry is shown hanging from the ceiling, but hiding behind the throne.
- The Panther King's servants are missing.
- Unlike the final game, the player can press Start at any point during the sequence at any time.
Level Differences
Hungover
Scaredy Birdy
- The music that plays when you talk to Birdy is absent.
Panhandled
Gargoyle
Windy
- You cannot get to the Barn Boys or Hungover areas via Windy, probably a catch-all for the public.
- The overall area of this chapter aside from the Poo Mountain had much more decoration on the ground, with more flowers, dandelions and visible grass. In front of the hole which leads to the Hungover area has a dancing smiling yellow flower that is absent from the final version.
Mrs. Bee
- When Conker arrives to the context-sensitive pad in front of the dung beetles blocking the entrance to the Poo Mountain, Birdy appears and sells Conker a manual as usual, but Conker distracts Birdy and stoles the money. In the final version, Birdy walks away and starts farting, causing the money to escape and runs back to Conker. Some of the camera positions on this cutscene are also different.
- The thought bubble when Conker is reading the manual has a glowing "A" button below Conker's thought. In the final version, it is replaced by "more..."
Poo Cabin
Pruned
Yeehaa!
Sewage Sucks
Great Balls of Poo
Wasp's Revenge
Mr. Barrel
Bat's Tower
Mrs Catfish
Barry's Mates
Cog's Revenge
The Combination
Blast Doors
Clang's Lair
- The whole level seems to be in a very early state of development and is completely different from the area in the final version. It is a maze-like environment with untextured short walls which has collision and don't make footsteps sounds when walked on. There's water on the foot's level in the floor and what seems to be a very odd lever.
Pisstastic
Brass Monkeys
- When The Big Big Guy is self-destructing, the voice saying "Warning! Warning! Self-destruct in one second!" sounds like a woman's voice, not a robotic voice like in the retail.
Bullfish's Revenge
Barn Boys
- The area made of cheese had a hidden context-sensitive pad which transformed Conker in an anvil, which would then destruct the ground, revealing a hook where a Squirrel Tail normally would be, but there isn't anything on the hook. This secret area looks to have been a secret passageway to another section of the level.
Marvin
Mad Pitchfork
Sunny Days
Barry + Co.
Buff You
Haybot Wars
Frying Tonight
Slam Dunk
Sloprano
Corn off the Cob
Sweet Melody
- Conker doesn't say "Oh! Oh!" before the Great Mighty Poo rises from the center of the stage.
- When the Great Mighty Poo signs "I'm going to take your head and ram it up my butt! and the following parts of the music, Conker stands still instead of saying "Your Butt?" or making a grunt.
- The money doesn't make any noise and when Conker touches it, it simply disappears instead of having a cutscene.
- When the camera switches to Conker during the flushing cutscene, he is seen taking out a gas mask, even though he didn't wear one during the fight. Furthermore, when Conker says "Now that's what I call a bowel movement.", he doesn't look at the player.
- The Great Mighty Poo has a lot of differences.
- He doesn't rise in front of Conker. Instead, he rises with his back turned to the glass protecting the flush rope. He also doesn't hold a corn tooth when rising. Instead, he keeps opening and closing his mouth and moving his hands left and right.
- "Mimimimi" is very, very different.
- The camera starts in his back and slowly turns to his front while he is rising. After reaching his front, the camera keeps still, which gives the impression that the Great Mighty Poo is breaking the fourth wall. This also applies to other parts of the music.
- When Conker throws toilet paper in his mouth, he doesn't start coughing; instead, the game skips to the cutscene where the Great Mighty Poo continues the music. However, you can hear the coughing at the start of this cutscene, but the Great Mighty Poo has his mouth open and looks rather odd.
- When he sings "How d'you think I keep this lovely grin?", it plays the sound effect for his teeth shining, despite them not actually shining.
- Conker doesn't make a grunt when he jumps to avoid being hit by Great Mighty Poo's poop ball in the second part of the music, and the poop ball can't be seen in the Great Mighty Poo's hand before he throws it.
- When he sings the third part of the music, his hands and arms doesn't move.
- When he sings the fourth part of the music, his mouth opens after he already started singing and the camera doesn't slowly zoom into his mouth. He also sometimes appears to be smaller; it is currently unknown why this happens.
- When Conker flushes him, his mouth doesn't move, there isn't a speech bubble nor any flushing sounds, and the camera doesn't follow the Great Mighty Poo inside the hole.
- The cutscene where he is flushed is a little bit shorter.
U-Bend Blues
The Bluff
- In the retail version of the first cutscene, Conker pays the guard so he can progress to the Uga-Buga chapter, but he says that Conker fits the description of a squirrel perfectly and will have to come with him, but Conker lies saying that he is an elephant and while he is leaving, another guard which was busy comes and insults the other guard for letting Conker get past. In the ECTS version, Conker doesn't pay the guard, the dialogue is slightly different, there aren't speech bubbles, most of the animations are missing, the guard which was busy say "Ah, there's nothing like a good ass." while in the final version the word "ass" was completely censored rather than being censored only in the speech bubble and it was re-recorded to sound like "shit", and the scene where Conker whistle to get his money back is absent, so the cutscene ends right after the busy guard says "An elephant. You stupid twat!".
Uga Buga
- Originally named "Ugga Bugga".
Drunken Gits
Sacrifice
- Some parts of the room where Conker finds the giant egg are untextured, including the giant egg itself.
- In the cutscene where Conker hatches the giant egg, some animations, various sound effects and musics are missing, some camera positions are different, "Some time later..." doesn't appear when the screen goes black, Conker doesn't say "Ah! Here it comes, whatever it is." when the egg is cracking, instead, he says that when the baby dinossaur is approaching him and the baby dinossaur makes some noises before revealing himself to Conker which were removed in the retail version.
Phlegm
Worship
Rock Solid
Bomb Run
Mugged
Raptor Food
Buga the Knut
- Originally named "Buga the Cnut".
- When Buga the Knut jumps into the arena, Conker says "Oh my giddy arse" instead of "Oh my giddy aunt".
Spooky
- The Spooky Chapter can be setup, but not entered, by Mr. Barrel from the Windy Chapter. This is because, at this point in the game's development, barrel physics cannot be disabled after completing Mr. Barrel. Thus, once the scene shifts to nighttime, Conker will begin moving on his own, as he would if he were still on Mr. Barrel. There is very little control over which direction Conker can move and therefore Spooky cannot be entered without glitches.
- Many of the cutscenes for Spooky exist in the game's data already as seen in this video:
- Note how speech bubbles aren't implemented, catfish are missing, water animation is unpolished, and many actions and facial animations are currently missing. In the very first scene, Conker doesn't make mention that he "won't be going back that way" when the pathway caves.
- Camera and motion paths are well-defined for Mr. Death and Conker, but Mr. Death has only one instance of defined body and facial movement throughout the scenes, with his arms outreached at all other times.
Mr. Death
- When loading this subchapter from "Chapters" at the main menu, this subchapter hasn't been implemented there yet. Instead, it uses Mrs. Catfish as a substitute.
Count Batula
- Count Batula is playable, but some animations (such as the blood flowing in the pumps after dropping a villager into the grinder) and camera scenes are missing. The game also hangs while naturally progressing to the Zombies subchapter.
Zombies
- Zombies is relatively easy to complete but you cannot progress any further afterwards. There are only two known zombies out in the garden that don't obey normal physics--they can walk on top of walls that they normally shouldn't be able to climb.
- Many floor textures do not have the correct step-sound or any sound at all when stepped on. For example, the hedges in the circular courtyard sound as if they are wood instead of grassy when stepped on.
- The ladder that leads to the bone switch and the third key is actually available at the start despite not having completed keys one and two--it just is not visible however. Getting to the bone switch is difficult because some control functionality of ladders is still not implemented in the game yet such as being able to immediately tail-spin after jumping from the ladder. Inserting the third key into the door does nothing and you are effectively stuck.
Mr. Barrel
- This subchapter is unplayable through normal progression and through selecting it from the Chapters menu. It loads Bullfish's Revenge instead from Bat's Tower. Mr. Barrel is also absent to begin with. It is unknown if either the mansion and/or Spooky can be exited with programmed warps--that is, it is not certain that the warps to exit have been properly programmed yet.
It's War
It's War
- This subchapter hasn't been implemented yet, so it uses Great Balls of Poo as a placeholder.
Power's Off
TNT
The Assault
Sole Survivor
Casualty Dept.
- Originally named "Experimenting".
- Instead of the first cutscene having two Tedi Surgeons smoking and breaking the fourth wall, it originally was a lot more gruesome; when Conker arrives at the room, he soon discovers that there are two Tedi Surgeons operating a SHC squirrel while he is still alive, likely a reference to the various German and Japanese experiments on live subjects. After that, the sequence where Conker has to kill the Tedi Surgeons start. It was removed because Nintendo forced the developers to, as revealed in a developer's commentary gameplay and the cutscene used in the retail version was originally supposed to be part of a redesigned end credits, which would have gone through various cutscenes and events of the game and shown blooper-like cuts of them, similar to the credits of the movie Toy Story 2. Musics and animations leftovers can still be found at the final product's data.
- One of the surgery "beds" in the room has some indescretible things in it. The SHC squirrel from the cutscene before this sequence is also laying down in the bed, however his eyes are closed.
- The SHC squirrel doesn't say anything after being electrocuted.
Saving Private Rodent
- In the first cutscene, there are two tied-up SHC squirrels, one of which says "Can't you untie me, and just let me go?". In the retail version, they were removed and Rodent says something very similar. They were reintroduced in the Xbox remake, as seen here.
Chemical Warfare
- In the first cutscene, some animations are missing and there isn't any speech bubbles.
The Tower
Little Girl
The Experiment
- The music is absent.
- The metal bridge doesn't produce any sound effect when walked on.
- The Little Girl's model is absent during the cutscene, but she appears normally when her model is with The Experiment.
- Speech bubbles are missing when she's describing the weapons.
Countdown
Peace at Last
- Animations and speech bubbles are missing.
- The game crashes after Conker says "I made it!"
Heist
The Windmill's Dead
- The first cutscene lacks speech bubbles and animations.
- The second cutscene is missing entirely, skipping to Enter the Vertex.
Enter the Vertex
Note: this is unfinished.
- The first cutscene has some differences.
- A lot of sound effects, dialogues and music are missing, and some are different in the sound effects case.
- Speech bubbles are missing.
- The Weasel's mouth doesn't move.
- Instead of one of the Weasels running towards Conker, he stands still while aiming.
- The camera doesn't change position to show one of the Weasels being shoot by Berry. Instead, it stay still.
- Conker's machine guns bullets have a different sound effect when fired while jumping.
- In the cutscene where Berry jumps above the first barrier of lasers, various sound effects are missing, she doesn't become distorced, the music doesn't change to accommodate the slowdown.
The Vault
- This subchapter cannot be loaded from the Chapters menu. Instead, you must progress through Enter the Vertex normally to reach the vault. However, it is not possible to enter the vault itself to progress to the end cutscene without cheating.
- The game begins to significantly lag at this point for an unknown reason. Further investigation is needed, especially on the actual N64 hardware.
End Cutscene
- This subchapter has not been implemented in the menu yet.
Other
Button Icons
Some button icons used in speech bubbles in the prototype are different:
| Prototype | Final |
|---|---|
- A and B buttons are seen in a vertical point of view, while in the retail version they are seen in an oblique point of view.
| Prototype | Final |
|---|---|
- The joystick is seen in a vertical point of view and lacks the black circle below it seen in a Nintendo 64 controller. It's point of view was changed to oblique/horizontal.
Intro
- The intro of the game in the ECTS prototype lacks the Panther King's servants and features Barry, which was only present in the Barry + Co. subchapter.
- It can be skiped by pressing Start, likely to get to the demo faster.
Menus
- The Weasels are missing in the bar. Some drinking army squirrels are in their place.
- Selecting any of the three games allows the player to jump to twelve of the selected highlights.
- The chapters menu does not have sophisticated headers.

The cheats menu is incomplete. The keyboard in the "Cheats" menu is almost untextured, having only blank buttons with letters or characters on them (except for the space button, which is untextured). These letters and characters are also different, most notably the "." and "DEL" button. Cheats also don't seem to be working at this point.
Crash Screen
Far more features are present here than in the final version's.
Unused Audio
| To do: Compare the audio files from the demo to the final game for differences. The demo also has less .mp3 files |
Using the Universal N64 Compressor to decompress the game files, some of the demo's sounds (specifically, the cutscene audio) can be found in .mp3 file formats. There's some sounds that are unused, and are not present in the final game at all.
Player One
Player Two
Player Three
Player Four
Possibly multiplayer related, since there's sounds for all for players.
Windy
Hay
Bats
Ugg
War
Tank
Heist
Many sounds related to the chapters and multiplayer game modes names. Possibly played when they were selected?
Game Over
To Be Continued
These last two were possibly used when the player got a game over, and when the demo was finished.
